A one-group pretest-posttest model was used in this study. The research participants consisted of 88 students studying at X University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing. While 67.1% of the students stated that there were obstacles in implementing family-centered care, 73.9% stated that there were no facilitating elements in implementing of family-centered care. A statistically significant difference was found between the mean scores of the students' posttest family-centered care attitude and parents' attitude at the end of the training. This study provides insights into family-centered care, which could be used in crafting policies and interventions in nursing education in Turkey. This study presents a newly developed software prototype with a hybrid RFID/BLE infrastructure to provide intelligent navigation and guidance to the visually impaired in complex indoor environments. The system enables the users to input their purpose via a specially designed user interface, and provides intelligent guidance through a chain of destination targets which are determined according to the inherent procedures of the environment. Path optimization is performed by adaptation of the traveling salesman problem, and real-time instantaneous instructions are provided to guide the users through the predetermined destination points. For evaluation purposes, a hospital environment is constructed as an example of a complex environment and the system is tested by visually impaired participants. The results show that the intelligent purpose selection and destination evaluation mechanism modules of the system are found to be effective by all the participants.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1The Effects of Amniotic Fluid and Foetal Cord Blood Cotinine Concentrations on Pregnancy Complications and the Anthropometric Measurements of Newborns(Taylor & Francis inc, 2019) Terzioglu, Fusun; Boztepe, Handan; Erkekoglu, Pinar; Korucu, Asli Er; Kocer-Gumusel, Belma; Kandemir, OmerOur objective was determining the effects of amniotic fluid (AF) and fetal cord blood (FCB) cotinine concentrations on pregnancy complications and the anthropometric measurements in the newborns whose mothers underwent amniocentesis. This study was conducted as a case-control study, in Turkey. A total of 250 pregnant women with amniocentesis indication were recruited into the study and the cotinine levels in the AF and FCB were determined. A smoking habit did not statistically affect the incidence of pregnancy complications (p>.05). The birth weights of the newborns were negatively correlated with the AF cotinine levels. The incidences of low birth weight, low Apgar scores and RDS were positively correlated with higher levels of cotinine in AF and FCB. It is important for healthcare staff to provide training and consultancy services for the health improvement of pregnant women and the prevention of smoking during pregnancy.Impact statement What is already known on this subject? The pre-pregnancy smoking habit usually continues during the pregnancy. A significant negative correlation was present between the foetal cord blood cotinine levels and the birth weight. What do the results of this study add? The anthropometric measurements of the newborns born from mothers with high AF cotinine levels were lower than newborns born from mothers with low amniotic fluid cotinine levels. This study was aim to explore the experiences and needs of Turkish mothers of infants with CHD. The study was carried out with the descriptive phenomenological method from qualitative research. The study sample included 18 mothers having infants in the age range of 0 to 2 years with CHD. The data were collected using a sociodemographic data form and a semi-structured interview form. The data obtained from the interviews were evaluated using the content and thematic analysis methods. Four main themes and sub-themes emerged from the qualitative data. "Effect of getting a diagnosis" with two sub-themes (emotional changes and a protective mother-infant relationship), "All emotions in one" with two sub-themes (fearing of death and torn between fear and hope), "Influences on a mother's life" with three sub-themes (forgetting herself, getting away from siblings' lives and relations with spouse), and stressors with three sub-themes (loss of control, physical care and unfulfilled needs). The results of the study provide insight into how Turkish mothers subjectively experience life after CHD. Mothers expected healthcare professionals to support and understand their experiences and needs. Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is one of the promising methods for real-time detection of bacteria and viruses. QCM is a technology that utilizes piezoelectric principles to measure mass and is commonly used in detecting the mass of chemicals adhering to a surface. Due to its high sensitivity and rapid detection times, QCM biosensors have attracted considerable attention as a potential method for detecting infections early and tracking the course of diseases, making it a promising tool for global public health professionals in the fight against infectious diseases. This review first provides an overview of the QCM biosensing method, including its principle of operation, various recognition elements used in biosensor creation, and its limitations and then summarizes notable examples of QCM biosensors for pathogens, focusing on microfluidic magnetic separation techniques as a promising tool in the pretreatment of samples. The review explores the use of QCM sensors in detecting pathogens in various samples, such as food, wastewater, and biological samples. The review also discusses the use of magnetic nanoparticles for sample preparation in QCM biosensors and their integration into microfluidic devices for automated detection of pathogens and highlights the importance of accurate and sensitive detection methods for early diagnosis of infections and the need for point-of-care approaches to simplify and reduce the cost of operation.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 5Structural Properties of an Engineered Outer Membrane Protein G Mutant, Ompg-16sl, Investigated With Infrared Spectroscopy(Taylor & Francis inc, 2020) Yilmaz, Irem; Yildiz, Ozkan; Korkmaz, FilizThe structural and functional differences between wild type (WT) outer membrane protein G and its two mutants are investigated with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Both mutants have a long extension to the primary sequence to increase the number of beta-strands from 14 (wild type) to 16 in an attempt to enlarge the pore diameter. The comparison among proteins is made in terms of pH-dependent conformational changes and thermal stability. Results show that all proteins respond to pH change but at different degrees. At acidic environment, all proteins contain the same number of residues participated in beta-sheet structure. However, at neutral pH, the mutants have less ordered structure compared to WT porin. Thermal stability tests show that mutants differ significantly from WT porin at neutral pH. Although the transition temperature is directly proportional with the amount of beta-sheet content, the changes in the pre-transition phase that pave the way to structural breakdown are shown to involve interactions among charged residues by two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy analysis. Results of the analysis show that side chain interactions play an active role under increasing temperature. Both mutants have more unordered secondary structure but they respond to pH change in tertiary structure level. Findings of this study provided deeper insight on the active players in structural stability of the WT porin. Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma
