Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 7Design of Novel Tellurium and Selenium Containing Semiconducting Polymers Using Quantum Mechanical Tools(Elsevier, 2017) Kaya, Birnur; Kayi, HakanStructural, optical and electronic properties of the two novel donor-acceptor-donor type conjugated polymers based on 4,7-di(selenophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole (SeSeSe) and 4,7-di(tellurophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]telluradiazole (TeTeTe) are investigated by means of quantum chemical calculations utilizing conventional and long-range corrected hybrid functionals. The lowest energy structures of the SeSeSe and TeTeTe monomers and oligomers are revealed through conformational analysis, while their electronic properties are obtained from density functional theory (DFT) molecular orbital calculations and optical properties are obtained from the time dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations for UV-vis absorption spectra. Electronic band gaps that directly affect the semiconducting properties of these novel polymers are calculated by using linear regression analysis of DFT data, and also periodic boundary conditions calculations (PBC-DFT). Our results indicate that SeSeSe and TeTeTe polymers have considerably lower band gap values than that of their furan-, thiophene-, benzooxadiazole- and benzothiadiazole-based analogs. The novel SeSeSe and TeTeTe polymers with improved optical and electronic properties may have an important role in the near future, especially for the optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications. Afterwards, we propose a new family of statistical randomness tests, that is periodic template tests, for a collection of binary sequences. We apply these tests to the outputs of AES, SHA-3, SHA-2 family, SHA-1 and MD5 and the binary expansion of pi and root 2 and biased non-random data to test the power of new tests. Moreover, we give the probabilities for all templates for the overlapping template matching test in the NIST test suite. All rights reserved.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 3Evaluation of Hepatosteatosis in Patients With Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection(Elsevier, 2023) Sayar, Merve Sefa; Bulut, Dilek; Acar, AliBackground and study aims: The current study aimed to investigate the frequency of hepatic steatosis in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients and determine the possible risk factors associated with its presence.Patients and methods: This cross-sectional study retrospectively evaluated the medical records of 255 adult CHB patients visiting an infectious disease outpatient clinic. Patients with hepatitis B surface anti-gen positivity for >6 months and those who did not receive antiviral therapy were included in the study. The presence and stage of hepatic steatosis were determined through hepatobiliary ultrasonography.Results: The mean age of the patients was 40.6 +/- 12.7 years. Hepatic steatosis was detected in 44.4 % of the patients through ultrasound imaging. Our findings showed that the detected steatosis prevalence in our patients with CHB was significantly higher compared to the highest prevalence of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis found in the general Turkish population (19.9 %) [RR 2.23 (1.75-2.86), p < 0.001]. CHB patients with steatosis had significantly higher age, triglyceride, and gamma-glutamyl transferase levels than those without steatosis (p < 0.05). No significant association was found between the presence of steatosis, sex, liver function test results, and platelet, alkaline phosphatase, cholesterol, alpha fetoprotein, or HBV-DNA levels. No significant relationship was found between aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/platelet ratio index (APRI) and steatosis was examined (p > 0.05). Post-hoc analysis showed a sig-nificant relationship between HBV-DNA levels and ALT, AST, and APRI scores.Conclusion: Our data showed that hepatic steatosis is more common in CHB patients than in the general population. Older age and high triglyceride levels increased the risk of hepatic steatosis in CHB patients, consequently increasing GGT levels, which are indicative of liver damage, in these patients.(c) 2022 Pan-Arab Association of Gastroenterology. Therefore, this paper aims at implementing a fault tolerant control strategy by means of a data-driven approach relying on fuzzy logic. In particular, fuzzy modelling is considered here as it enables to approximate unknown nonlinear relations, while managing uncertain measurements and disturbance. On the other hand, the model of the fuzzy controller is directly estimated from the input-output signals acquired from the wind farm system, with fault tolerant capabilities. In general, the use of purely nonlinear relations and analytic methods would require more complex design tools. The design is therefore enhanced by the use of fuzzy model prototypes obtained via a data-driven approach, thus representing the key point if real-time solutions have to implement the proposed fault tolerant control strategy. Finally, a high-fidelity simulator relying on a hardware-in-the-loop tool is exploited to verify and validate the reliability and robustness characteristics of the developed methodology also for on-line and more realistic implementations. We address this oversight in preregistered study by testing whether country-level norms moderate the relationships identity, anger at injustice, and efficacy have with support for pro-immigrant solidarity collective action using data from 22 countries (N = 4615). Given that cultures that emphasize honor and face prioritize harmony and social cohesion over conflict, we expected that honor codes and face orientation would attenuate the links identity, injustice, and efficacy have with collective action support. Results showed that identification, efficacy, and anger at injustice were linked to collective action intentions in most countries, but honor codes attenuated the relationship between anger and collective action intentions. We further discuss the implications and limitations of these results in light of cross-cultural studies of pro-immigrant attitudes and actions. Overall, our findings complement research on predictors of collective action and the dual-chamber model of collective action by presenting potential cultural constraints.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 10A Theoretical Investigation of 4,7-Di(furan Donor-Acceptor Type Conjugated Polymer(Elsevier, 2015) Kayi, Hakan; Elkamel, AliQuantum chemical calculations are performed using density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the HOMO-LUMO energy gap of the 4,7-di(furan-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole-based (FSeF) donor-acceptor type conjugated polymer which ascertains the optoelectronic properties and plays a crucial role, especially in polymeric solar cell applications. In this paper, the most stable conformers of the FSeF monomer and its corresponding oligomers are investigated at the B3LYP/Def2TZV and B3LYP/LANL2DZ levels of theory, and their molecular structures are revealed. The band gap of the polymer is determined by linear-fitting and extrapolation of the DFT data. This gap is found to be 1.44 eV and 1.45 eV by the B3LYP/Def2TZV, and B3LYP/LANL2DZ with PCM calculations, respectively. Our theoretical findings related to the band gap of the FSeF polymer (PFSeF) are in good agreement with other experimental studies in the literature and, hence, the theoretical methods used in this study are promising for the design of similar donor-acceptor type novel conjugated polymers. Folic acid (FA) is a synthetic derivative of folate and is recommended as a preconceptional supplement. However, the impact of different doses of FA supplementation and folate deficiency during the early stages of pregnancy requires further investigation. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effects of FA supplementation and folate deficiency on expression of Estrogen Receptor Alpha (ER-alpha), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-A (VEGFA), and Integrin alpha V and beta3 (Integrin alpha V beta 3). A total of 32, 6-8-week old Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups of control, folate-deficiency, low-dose, and highdose FA supplement groups. After five weeks of FA supplementation and folate deficiency model formation, mated rats were sacrificed on the 5th gestational day (GD), and implantation sites were collected. The expression of ER- alpha, VEGFA, and Integrin alpha V beta 3 in the implantation sites were examined with immunohistochemistry and real-time PCR. The results revealed that the mRNA levels of ESR1, VEGFA, and Integrin alpha V and beta 3 were significantly increased in the high-dose FA group and significantly decreased in the folate deficiency group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Based on these results, it can be concluded that FA supplementation before pregnancy has positive effects on the maintenance of pregnancy, and folate deficiency may lead to implantation disorders.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Does Reformer Pilates Exercise Improve Cognitive Functions in Sedentary Women? a Randomized Controlled Study(Elsevier, 2024) Ozeren, Aysenur; Ulug, Naime; Sahan, Nilay; Karahan, Zehra CanBackground: The reformer is an apparatus on which to perform the foot work and the body in a comfortable, nonweight-bearing supine position and keeps the muscles in balance. The aim of this randomized controlled and single-center study was to investigate the effect of reformer Pilates exercises on cognitive functions in sedentary women. Methods: A total of 44 sedentary women aged between 24 and 50 were randomized into two groups. The reformer Pilates group received a 6-week exercise program (45 min/twice per week), while the control group didn't receive any exercise program. Outcomes measured before and after the interventions were, right/left discrimination and scores of two questionnaires: Stroop Test and The Pittsburgh SleepQuality Index. Results: Reformer pilates group showed significant improvement in terms of the Stroop Test (STROOP) "STROOP-B" (t0 = 156; p < 0.05; Cohen d = 0.12), "STROOP-C" (U = 144.5; p < 0.05; Cohen d = 1.13) and "STROOP-D" (U = 165; p < 0.05, Cohen d = 0.40) when compared to control group. In the comparison of the results of the right-left separation in both groups, the difference values were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Similarly, in the both groups the sleep quality of the individuals improved, but the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The results of the current study suggest that Reformer Pilates exercises may be more effective on cognitive functions compared to no exercise intervention in sedentary women. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between subclinical inflammation level, exercise capacity, muscle oxygenation and quality of life in T2DM. Methods: This study includes 28 patients with T2DM (mean age, 51.5 +/- 5.0 years; male-to-female ratio, 6:22). Exercise capacity was evaluated using an incremental symptom-limited maximal exercise test on a bicycle ergometer. Muscle oxygenation was investigated using a wearable lactate-measuring device. Diabetes-specific quality of life was assessed using the Diabetes Quality of Life Questionnaire (DQOL). Subclinical inflammation was assessed using C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Results: CRPlevelwasnegatively correlatedwith peakworkload during the test (r=-0.588, p=0.002), muscle oxygenation (r=-0.465, p= 0.019) and the psychological impact of treatment subscale of the DQOL (r= e0.540, p=0.017), and positively correlated with body mass index (r=0.519, p=0.008), waist circumference (r=0.426, p=0.038) and fat percentage (r=0.573, p=0.004). Therewasnocorrelation betweenCRPand fasting blood glucose or glycated hemoglobin level (p>0.05). Peakworkloadwas inversely related to fat percentage (r=-0.467, p=0.016) and the DQOLworry about the future impact of diabetes subscale (r=-0.501, p=0.021). Conclusions: In our study, subclinical inflammation negatively affected muscle oxygenation, exercise capacity and quality of life independently of glycemic indicators. Our findings suggest that the degree of glycemic control is insufficient to explain lower exercise capacity. Further studies are needed to investigate subclinical inflammation-reducing interventions in T2DM. (C) 2020 Canadian Diabetes Association.
