    Europeanisation or De-Europeanisation? Media Freedom in Turkey (1999-2015)

    The European Union (EU) has successfully been exercising its transformative power through both its enlargement and its neighbourhood policies for decades. Nonetheless, transformation towards a more European model of governance through Europeanisation is not a linear process, but a differentiated one. Adverse consequences for Europeanisation (i.e. de-Europeanisation) have often been neglected. The case of media freedom in Turkey, with a deteriorating trend across time, exemplifies such an outcome. This article explores media freedom in Turkey in the last decade. It argues that media reforms have been reversed over time in a de-Europeanising trend, with the EU losing its position as a reference point for reforms.

    Besir Fuad's voltaire: Liberating the Individual

    Besir Fuad (1852?-1887) is an obscure figure among late nineteenth century Ottoman intellectuals known for his materialistic views which were unprecedented under the Hamidian regime (1876-1909) and who shocked his contemporaries by committing suicide at an early age, leaving a note and a letter containing his last impressions and world view. Just months before his suicide, Besir Fuad published a Voltaire biography in which he commemorates him as an Enlightenment ideal to be emulated in humankind's struggle against religious intolerance. In this article, Besir Fuad's Voltaire (1886) is examined, arguing that the monograph was, though in an embryonic form, an early expression and defence of individual liberty, based on a materialistic world view that aims at demystification of the prevailing customs and morals as irrational and superstitious absurdities to pave the way for a future society in which the individual would be in liberty.

    Negative Campaigning in Turkish Elections

    The academic literature on negative campaigning is growing. As an attempt to contribute to the theoretical and empirical knowledge on the phenomena, this study focuses on the Turkish elections and tries to provide answers to the following research questions: What is the level of negativity in Turkish electoral campaigns and which factors are salient for going negative for Turkish political parties? Findings display the fact that negativity is noticeably high in Turkey, and incumbency, ideology and time focus of messages are salient factors for negativity.

    Reproducing the Paradigm of Democracy in Turkey: Parochial Democratization in the Decade of Justice and Development Party

    Recent democratic performance of the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi) indicates the dissolution of its original liberal ambiguity in ways that hinder the possibilities of a full-fledged democracy in Turkey. This study finds the explanation in the perpetuation of a specifically Turkish paradigm of democracy/democratization, which has emerged in the early years of the Turkish experiment with democracy and has been reproduced by the Turkish political class ever since. In doing so, the article draws attention to the predominance of a defective conceptualization of democracy, which, while emphasizing the elected government's supremacy over the tutelary state elite, fails to come to terms with the inevitability of political disagreement and the normative imperative of seeking consensus for a positivesum politics.

    Moocs and Economic Disadvantage: a Path Analysis of 3.5 Million Mitx Learners

    Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) are offered by universities and companies to provide quality education to anyone, anyplace and at any time. The impact of economic disadvantage on these courses has not been fully explored despite several studies. This study aimed to investigate the impact of country's income level on the success of 3,523,692 learners from 204 countries enrolled in 174 MITx MOOCs. The countries were classified as low- and lower-middle-income (L&LM) or high- and upper-middle-income (H&UM). A structural equation modelling with multigroup analysis conducted. The findings revealed that learners in the L&LM group performed better academically. Completion rates were 66% for L&LM and 25% for H&UM, and certification rates were 95% for L&LM and 99% for H&UM. This shows that L&LM learners may be more motivated because they believe MOOCs might help their careers. These results are essential for creating MOOCs that fit diverse learner demographics.

    The Effects of Computer-Aided Concept Teaching With the Direct Instruction Model on Concept Acquisition of Students With Intellectual Disabilities

    This study aimed to develop and evaluate a technology-based instructional tool using the Direct Instruction Model (DIM) for teaching geometric concepts - cube, cylinder and cone - to students with mild intellectual disabilities (ID). The 'Shape Finder' application was designed following DIM principles and assessed using a multiple probe design across participants. Four students with mild ID, their three teachers and six special education experts participated. Data collection involved app-based performance metrics, observations and interviews. Results indicated that the Shape Finder effectively supported students' acquisition, retention (up to five weeks), and generalisation of the targeted geometric shapes to real-world objects. Interviews confirmed the application's social validity. The findings highlight that integrating evidence-based instructional models with technology can enhance concept learning for students with mild ID, facilitating both short-term gains and long-term retention. This study underscores the potential of well-designed digital tools in special education to support conceptual understanding and generalisation across contexts.

    Gendered Interactions Mediated by Design: Sexual Harassment on Public Transport

    This paper explores the gendered interactions that are mediated by designed products in actual use contexts. Our case is vehicle design for public transportation, a product category that is, from the outset, relatively gender-neutral when compared to explicitly gender-segregated categories such as household electronics, cars, and toys, even if public transit users are more often women than men. The empirical basis of research comes from interviews with women passengers. Our analysis demonstrates that seemingly gender-neutral designs can be merely gender-blind in that they have significant impact in the gendered experiences of its users, which includes, in this case, being exposed to or feeling at risk of sexual harassment and assault in public transportation as a woman. Therefore, feminist design interventions into mobility environments can provide immediate practical solutions that would complement policy and lawmaking efforts that are necessary to ensure safety for women on public transport.

    User Study of a New Smart Toy for Children's Storytelling

    This article introduces StoryTech, a smart storytelling toy that offers children a mixed reality environment in which to tell imaginative stories. During usability testing, an empirical study was carried out with 90 child participants. The findings indicated that StoryTech creates a rich storytelling experience, especially for ages five and six.

    It Is Voluntary Transfer! Exploring Healthcare Reforms in Turkey

    The Turkish healthcare system has been transformed in the 2000s by adopting a comprehensive health model - the so-called Turkish Model. Although Europeanization dynamics were effective in Turkey in recent decades due to the acceleration of European Union (EU) accession process after 1999, healthcare reforms demonstrate a distinct process. This article analyzes the factors behind the health transformation through employing a policy transfer framework. It argues that a parallel process of health-policy transfer with Europeanization in other areas emerged in Turkey, and rather than the EU push, the Turkish healthcare model was a result of voluntary engagement for eliminating problems in this domain.
