We define the complexity of S to be the maximum rank of a free abelian subgroup of Mod(S). Suppose that S-1 and S-2 are two such surfaces of the same complexity. We prove that every isomorphism Mod(S-1) -> Mod(S-2) is induced by a diffeomorphism S-1 -> S-2. The same period also witnessed the triumph of architectural competitions both as effectual tools of agonism and as potential means of cultivating participatory cultures in the production of urban space. Recent discussions, hereof, suggest that competitions’ agonistic vocations counteracted the pluralist. To solidify this critical rhetoric, withal, there is insufficient research on power dynamics, structures, and implications of competitions. Herein, this study, in its broadest sense, investigates the potency of architectural competitions in allocating spatial, social, political, and economic resources and capacities. The work critically and creatively maps the dynamics and structures of competitions and further testifies (potential) agencies of multifarious actors among these, specifically delving into the emergent local governance structures of two cities from a developing country: Istanbul and Ankara. With divergent spatial development histories and trajectories, the two become complementary cases, novel local governance models of which fundamentally operationalize architectural competitions as means of commoning and register a radical paradigm shift. From a critical and comparative framework, the research reviews literature and relevant data and relies on semi-structured interviews with local government officials, city councilors, competition organizers, jurors, and critics. However, there are still millions of people around the world with inadequate clean water sources. Microbiological pollution is one of the most concerned water pollutants and is the crucial cause of waterborne diseases like diarrhea, resulting in about two million deaths annually due to severe dehydration (WHO in Guidelines for drinking-water quality. Incorporating the first addendum, WHO, Geneva, 2017). It is critical to develop methods using advanced materials and process to mitigate contaminants from water resources. Production of safe water usually involves disinfection and decontamination processes. Conventional disinfection process, such as chlorination, is challenged by the formation of disinfection by-products. Furthermore, the presence of emerging pathogenic, that resist conventional water treatment techniques, raised the crucial necessity for emerging materials and techniques for treating water from microbiological pollution (Shannon et al. in Nature 452:301–310, 2008). This chapter describes bacterial, viral, and protozoal microbiological pollution in water supplies and the application of emerging materials and techniques to eliminate such contaminations. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.Article Variations in Chemical Composition of Some Steels During Continuous Casting(Springer, 2012) Keskinkilic, E.In this study, chemical composition variations of some steels during continuous casting were investigated in Eregli Iron and Steel Works Co. (ERDEMIR), Turkey. Final chemical analysis of a heat is determined in the continuous casting stage. Three steel specimens are regularly taken from the mould at certain meters of slab strand for each heat. The aim of this work was to evaluate the extent of changes in chemical analysis along the slab strand. Consequently, the leading aim of this study was to determine whether the number of specimens taken for each heat could be decreased without compromising quality control of the continuous casting. This was accomplished for some low-carbon, ultra-low carbon, and structural steels, which constitute the majority part of the ERDEMIR product range. This work aims at modeling of low cost devulcanized recycled rubber based composite behavior at high strain rates. In that framework, we established a continuum-based material model in order to capture the macroscopic behavior of the recycled rubber based composite material and numerically reproduce the results from the basic characterization tests. Thusly, this study hypothesized that the HEp-2 human laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) cell line releases AEA and 2-AG, and aimed to determine if their exogenous supplementation has an anti-proliferative effect in vitro. In this in vitro observational study a commercial human LSCC cell line (HEp-2) was used to test for endogenous AEA and 2-AG release via liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The anti-proliferative effect of AEA and 2-AG supplementation was evaluated via WST-1 proliferation assay. It was observed that the HEp-2 LSCC cell line released AEA and 2-AG; the median quantity of AEA released was 15.69 ng mL(-1) (range: 14.55-15.95 ng mL(-1)) and the median quantity of 2-AG released was 2.72 ng (-1) (range: 2.67-2.74 ng mL(-1)). Additionally, both AEA and 2-AG exhibited an anti-proliferative effect. The anti-proliferative effect of 2-AG was stronger than that of AEA. These findings suggest that AEA might function via a CB1 receptor-independent pathway and that 2-AG might function via a CB2-dependent pathway. The present findings show that the HEp-2 LSCC cell line releases the major endocannabinoids AEA and 2-AG, and that their supplementation inhibits tumor cell proliferation in vitro. Thus, cannabinoid ligands might represent novel drug candidates for laryngeal cancers, although functional in vivo studies are required in order to validate their potency.
