Article Translating Culture in Children's Literature: a Case Study on the Turkish Translation of Letters From Father Christmas;(Selcuk University, 2020) Hastürkoğlu,G.Translation has been considered as a cross-cultural act comprising the transference of the cultural signs, rather than only finding the equivalence of linguistic patterns in the target text. As bridge-builders between different cultures, translators assume a very significant role in order to achieve the most appropriate cognitive, cultural, stylistic, and linguistic equivalence in the target system. This role becomes more challenging and problematic when the target audience are children. By emphasizing the difficulties in translating children's literature and the required strategies, the present study examines the Turkish translation of culturally-bound words and expressions in Tolkien's Letters From Father Christmas. Within the framework of Lawrence Venuti's concepts of domestication and foreignization, and Klingberg's scheme of cultural context adaptation categories, this study analysed the translator's strategies and decisions and discussed whether the translator successfully conveys the same impression in the target audience in a context which is foreign to the Turkish culture and children in particular. © 2020 JLLS and the Authors - Published by JLLS.Article Citation - Scopus: 59A Short Survey on the Recent Fixed Point Results on B-Metric Spaces(Selcuk University, 2018) KARAPINAR,E.The aim of this short survey is to collect and combine basic notions and results in the fixed point theory in the context of b-metric spaces. Veriler 2015-2016, 2016-2017 ve 2017-2018 bahar döneminde öğrencilerin eğitmen, ders ve kendi performanslarına ilişkin değerlendirme ve yorumlarda bulundukları öğrenme çıktıları anketleri ve öğrenci bilgi sistemi yoluyla doldurulan formlardan toplanmıştır. Veriler, her bahar döneminde tartışılmış olan konulara ve konuların terminolojilerine ilişkin iki kısa sınavın sonuçlarıyla güçlendirilmiştir. Sonuçlar, öğrencilerin Model Birleşmiş Milletler simülasyonlarına aktif bir şekilde katılımlarının meta-bilişsel gelişimlerine ve mesleki kariyerleri için gerekli olan bilgi ve becerileri edinmelerine büyük katkı sağladığını göstermektedir.Article Citation - Scopus: 14Linguistic and Cognitive Aspects of Translation and Interpretation Skills(Selcuk University, 2020) Erton,İ.Translation receives a lot of attention from sociology, psychology, computer sciences, information technologies and from linguistics, from which it originates. With the advances in technology in the 21st century, studies show that translation is not a sterile linguistic activity, but a reflection of a set of skills and capabilities of the translator/interpreter (T/I). In this respect, the formation of translation competence and related practices requires a thorough perception of worldwide affairs embodying value systems that a language holds framed through sociocultural practices. The achievement of the nature of both source and target languages, henceforth, allows for the establishment of effective linguistic competencies. In turn, such sociolinguistic, communicative, strategic, pragmatic and semiotic competencies provide the T/I with the opportunity to consider the translation/interpretation task from a variety of perspectives, all of which might initially seem independent of each other, but inherently correlated in their nature. Especially, the study of the physical properties of speech helps interpreters perceive a wide range of sounds for fluency and strategic thinking. Therefore, translation/interpretation is said to be a communicative activity, to be recognized and acknowledged by practitioners more in the sense that language – the tool of the craft – is a reflection of value systems framed through sociocultural practices and a mindset formulated with critical and creative thinking. This is believed to play a key role in the way translation/interpretation is perceived and, hence, its success upon implementation. In accordance with this framework, this paper provides a set of key qualities accounting for a T/I’s success. © 2020 JLLS and the Authors - Published by JLLS.Article Herpes Zoster Hastalarının Demografik ve Klinik Özelliklerinin Değerlendirilmesi(Selcuk University, 2023) Demirci Saadet, E.; Hasanbeyzade, S.Background: Herpes zoster is a disease that is more frequently seen in people aged over 50 years and negatively affects the quality of life due to the development of post-herpetic neuralgia. This study aimed to investigate the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients diagnosed with herpes zoster. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the data of patients who were followed up with a diagnosis of herpes zoster at the dermatology department between 2013 and 2020 were retrospectively examined. Results: Of 440 patients, 252 (57.3%) were female and 188 (42.7%) were male. The mean age was 48.9±18 (4-94) years. The most common localization was the thoracic region at a rate of 35.5% and the lumbar region at a rate of 21.4%. Disseminated and ophthalmic zoster were more common in elderly patients (p<0.001). The most common comorbidities were hypertension (HT)+coronary artery disease (CAD) (12.6%), cancer (10.3%), and diabetes+HT (5.9%). Severe pain was observed in 19.7% of the patients and was more common in women (p=0.016). The rate of moderate and severe pain was high in the patients with HT+CAD and cancer (p˂0.001). Post-herpetic neuralgia was observed in 15.3% of the patients aged over 50. Conclusions: Herpes zoster is especially common in adults. Since it causes acute pain and can lead to postherpetic neuralgia development, risky patient groups should be more carefully followed up and treated. © 2023, Selcuk University. All rights reserved.Article Evaluating the New English Language Teaching Program of Turkey for Primary Schools Anthropocentrically(Selcuk University, 2020) Yastıbaş,A.E.The new geological epoch called the Anthropocene has shown how human activities have influenced the world negatively and revealed the threat created by ongoing human activities to the sustainability of the future of the world. Therefore, what the Anthropocene has shown has to be dealt with. One way to do this is education. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the new Turkish English Language Teaching Program for primary schools anthropocentrically. It was designed as a qualitative study. The data were collected through the new program for primary schools and the coursebooks prepared according to the new program. The data was analyzed through documentation analysis. Triangulation and thick descriptions were used to make the study trustworthy. The findings have shown that the new program has seven themes related to nature in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-grade syllabi. They have also indicated that these themes can help students to study and learn English in relation to nature. The findings were discussed and suggestions for further studies made. © 2020 JLLS and the Authors - Published by JLLS.
