    Trace Element Containing Nano-HAp for Preventing Musculoskeletal Infections

    Musculoskeletal infections are difficult to diagnose and rapidly reach the chronic phase that is difficult to treat. Osteomyelitis and septic arthritis are inflammatory musculoskeletal diseases and their recovery should contain bone or joint regeneration approaches. Nanometer-sized hydroxyapatite is the main inorganic component of the bone tissue that resembles its extracellular matrix. Nanometer-sized hydroxyapatite composite is also an efficient carrier for various regenerative molecules and medicine. Trace elements on the other hand enhance bone formation, mineralization and have antibacterial properties. Bioactivity, biocompatibility, and antibacterial properties of nanometer-sized hydroxyapatite can be gained and improved with trace elements such as zinc, boron, magnesium, strontium, and molybdenum. This chapter summarizes studies on the effects of zinc, boron, magnesium, strontium, and/or molybdenum-doped nanometer-sized hydroxyapatite that can be used to treat musculoskeletal infections. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

    Parametric Sensitivity Analysis and Performance Evaluation of High-Temperature Macro-Encapsulated Packed-Bed Latent Heat Storage System Operating With Transient Inlet Boundary Conditions

    This paper presents the results of comprehensive numerical analyses in the performance of a packed-bed latent heat storage (PBLHS) system in terms of key performance indicators, namely charging time, charging rate, charging capacity, and charging efficiency. Numerical simulations are performed for the packed bed region using a transient two-dimensional axisymmetric model based on the local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) approach. The model considers the variation in the inlet temperature of the system as these storage systems are typically integrated with solar collectors that operate with intermittent solar radiation intensity. The model results are validated using the experimental data for temperature distribution throughout the bed. The simulations are carried out while changing the operating parameters such as the capsule diameter, bed porosity, inlet velocity, and the height-to-diameter aspect ratio to investigate their impact on the performance indicators. Observations indicate that low porosity, large-sized capsules, low inlet velocity, and a low height-to-diameter aspect ratio increase the charging time. In terms of achieving a high charging rate, a bed with low porosity, small-sized capsules, a high inflow velocity, and a high height-to-diameter aspect ratio is deemed advantageous. It is shown that raising the flow velocity and the height-to-diameter aspect ratio can improve the charging efficiency. These findings provide recommendations for optimizing the design and operating conditions of the system within the practical constraints.

    The Markov Discrete Time Δ-Shock Reliability Model and a Waiting Time Problem

    delta-shock model is one of the widely studied shock models in reliability theory and applied probability. In this model, the system fails due to the arrivals of two consecutive shocks which are too close to each other. That is, the system breaks down when the time between two successive shocks falls below a fixed threshold delta. In the literature, the delta-shock model has been mostly studied by assuming that the time between shocks have continuous distribution. In the present paper, the discrete time version of the model is considered. In particular, a proper waiting time random variable is defined based on a sequence of two-state Markov dependent binary trials and the problem of finding the distribution of the system's lifetime is linked with the distribution of the waiting time random variable, and we study the joint as well as the marginal distributions of the lifetime, the number of shocks and the number of failures associated with these binary trials.

    An Approach To Best Proximity Points Results Via Simulation Functions

    In this paper, we investigate of the existence of the best proximity points of certain mapping defined via simulation functions in the frame of complete metric spaces. We consider the uniqueness criteria for such mappings. The obtained results unify a number of the existing results on the topic in the literature.

    Comparison of the Effectiveness of Kinesiology Taping and Rigid Taping on Ankle Kinematics During Drop Landing in Individuals With Lateral Ankle Injury

    Background: Lateral ankle sprain is an injury that often occurs during sports or daily life activ-ities. Athletic tape and kinesiology tape applications are among the external support treatment options especially for athletes to support the ankle and protect it from recurrent sprains. We sought to compare the kinematic stabilization effects of different ankle taping applications on the ankle joint during drop landing in individuals with a history of unilateral lateral ankle injury. Methods: In this randomized controlled study, 30 volunteers with unilateral ankle injury were evaluated. The participants were asked to land on one leg on the involved side and the contralateral side from a 30-cm-high platform. The same practice was repeated after apply-ing kinesiology tape and rigid tape to the injured foot. Kinematic analysis of the foot and ankle was performed by recording three-dimensional spatial position information at a speed of 240 frames per second using infrared cameras. Results: The highest inversion angles of the involved foot at initial contact and 150 msec after initial contact were higher than those of the uninvolved side (P = .03 and P = .04, respec-tively). There was no significant difference in ankle kinematic values in the involved foot among kinesiology taping, athletic taping, and no taping applications (P = .74). Conclusions: People with lateral ankle sprains show reduced inversion during landing. There were no significant differences among kinesiology taping, athletic taping, and no taping on the injured foot in terms of ankle kinematics. Care should be taken when using taping materials as protective measures for sports activities. © 2022, American Podiatric Medical Association. All rights reserved.

    Power and Love versus Death : "Death Constant Beyond Love " by Gabriel Garc ía Márquez

    This article analyses the philosophy and literary aesthetics of Gabriel García Márquez's political satire with reference to his short story, "Death Constant beyond Love."The analysis is based on the author's views concerning the common personality traits, actions and ends of tyrannical rulers made manifest in the main character of the story - Senator Onesimo Sanchez. It is observed that the philosopher-emperor Marcus Aurelius' meditations on the transience of existence, and the mortality of man serve as the backdrop to the power-drunk Senator's vain attempts to keep exercising his tyranny despite his awareness of his looming death. The story's central theme is that misused political power - no matter how wide its scope - is limited by man's transient corporeal existence, or by death, to put it more simply. The author's reflections upon dishonest politicians as fictionalized in the Senator display how corruption defiles each individual in society. The discussion on the nature and ramifications of man's boundless ambition for power also draws on Nietzsche's will to power/will to life equation, andFoucault's views on resistance-freedom/power proposition. © 2024 Kuǧu Tekin.

    On the Derivation of Explicit Formulae for Solutions of the Wave Equation in Hyperbolic Space

    We offer a new approach to solving the initial value problem for the wave equation in hyperbolic space in arbitrary dimensions. Our approach is based on the spectral analysis of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in hyperbolic space and some structural formulae for rapidly decreasing functions of this operator. © 2013, Hacettepe University.     Current Issues in and an Emerging Method for Flood Frequency Analysis Under Changing Climate

    In this study several issues with the standard flood frequency analysis are discussed in the context of a changing hydro-climate in the 21st century. Among these issues the loss of statistical equilibrium in the hydro-climate of a studied region during the 21st century has serious implications on the standard frequency analysis that is discussed in some detail. An alternative method to flood frequency analysis within the framework of a changing climate based on ensemble of future climate projections is reported and demonstrated by a numerical application to a target watershed.

    Let B-n (f, q; x), n = 1, 2, ... , 0 < q < infinity, be the q-Bernstein polynomials of a function f, B-n (f, 1; x) being the classical Bernstein polynomials. It is proved that, in general, {B-n (f, q(n); x)} with q(n) down arrow 1 is not an approximating sequence for f is an element of C[0, 1], in contrast to the standard case q(n) up arrow 1. At the same time, there exists a sequence 0 < delta(n) down arrow 0 such that the condition 1 <= q(n) <= delta(n) implies the approximation of f by {B-n(f, qn; x)} for all f is an element of C[0, 1].

    Refractive Index, Static Dielectric Constant, Energy Band Gap and Oscillator Parameters of Ga2ses Single Crystals

    The optical properties of Bridgman method grown Ga2SeS crystals have been investigated by means of room-temperature transmittance and reflectance spectral analysis. The optical data have revealed direct and indirect allowed transition band gaps of 2.49 and 2.10 eV, respectively. The room-temperature refractive index, which was calculated from the reflectance and transmittance data, allowed the identification of the dispersion and oscillator energies, static dielectric constant and static refractive index as 20.93 eV and 4.01 eV, 6.21 and 2.49, respectively.
