Trace Element Containing Nano-HAp for Preventing Musculoskeletal Infections
    (Springer Science and Business Media B.V., 2021) Gizer,M.; Boyacıoğlu,Ö.; Korkusuz,P.; Korkusuz,F.
Musculoskeletal infections are difficult to diagnose and rapidly reach the chronic phase that is difficult to treat. Osteomyelitis and septic arthritis are inflammatory musculoskeletal diseases and their recovery should contain bone or joint regeneration approaches. Nanometer-sized hydroxyapatite is the main inorganic component of the bone tissue that resembles its extracellular matrix. Nanometer-sized hydroxyapatite composite is also an efficient carrier for various regenerative molecules and medicine. Trace elements on the other hand enhance bone formation, mineralization and have antibacterial properties. Bioactivity, biocompatibility, and antibacterial properties of nanometer-sized hydroxyapatite can be gained and improved with trace elements such as zinc, boron, magnesium, strontium, and molybdenum. This chapter summarizes studies on the effects of zinc, boron, magnesium, strontium, and/or molybdenum-doped nanometer-sized hydroxyapatite that can be used to treat musculoskeletal infections. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

    Community Development, Frustration and Overtourism
    (Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2021) Koç,B.; Küçükergin,K.G.
Tourism and community development are two complementary variables. There are many studies in the literature examining the effects of tourism on society. However, the number of studies focussing on the subject from the perspective of overtourism is still very limited. Although a shrinking in tourism demand is estimated for the next few years due to Covid-19, it is expected that the sector will face an even more intense tourist boom around the world after this health crisis. Therefore, the phenomenon of overtourism remains important. In this context, a conceptual examination was made in the current chapter regarding the observed and possible effects of tourism density on communities. The existing literature clearly shows that being successful in the long term is impossible with a tourism plan that uses natural resources, infrastructure facilities and traditional values of the region to create tourist demand but ignores the wishes and well-being of the community residents. © 2021 by Emerald Publishing Limited.

    Fuel Cell Energy Conversion
    (Elsevier, 2025) Ercelik, M.; Nalbant, Y.; Çolpan, C.; Ismail, M.S.
Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert the chemical energy of the fuel into electrical energy directly. There are different types of fuel cells, which can be categorized according to their electrolyte type and fuel used. The performance of these fuel cells mainly depends on the materials of their components and the manufacturing method. In this chapter, an introduction to different fuel cell types, the materials and manufacturing methods that can be used for fuel cells, and characterization techniques are first presented. Then, the basic concepts and equations for the thermodynamics and electrochemistry of fuel cells are given. The principles of fuel cell stack design including the calculations of pressure drop within a flow field are discussed. Energy and exergy analyses of integrated fuel cells systems are also presented. This chapter also covers several illustrative examples and a case study on the mathematical modeling of fuel cells. © 2025 Elsevier Inc. PARAZİTER ÜVEİTLER
(UBAK Publishing House, 2025) Usluca, Selma
Paraziter üveitler; Toxoplasma gondii, Toxocara canis/cati, Taenia solium’un larval formu (Cysticercus cellulosae), Echinococcus granulosus ve filarial Onchocerca volvulus gibi etkenlerin göz dokularını tutmasıyla gelişir ve dünyanın birçok bölgesinde önlenebilir görme kaybının önemli nedenleri arasında yer alır (Kalogeropoulos et al., 2021; Ahn et al., 2014; Pujari et al., 2021; Guo et al., 2017; Brattig et al., 2020). Toksoplazmoz, özellikle Latin Amerika’da posterior üveitin başlıca sebebi olup erişkinlerde ve çocuklarda benzer şekilde ciddi görme kaybına neden olabilir (De Angelis et al., 2021; Arruda et al., 2021). Toksokariyaz olguları çoğunlukla çocuklarda tek taraflı granülomatöz arka üveit/panüveit ile seyrederken, sistiserkozis ve nadiren ekinokokkozis intraoküler kistler, belirgin vitritis ve subretinal yerleşimle ağır görme kaybına yol açabilir (Ahn et al., 2014; Wender et al., 2011; Bhende & Bhende, 2019; Guo et al., 2017). Onkoserkiyazis ise Sahra Altı Afrika başta olmak üzere endemik bölgelerde kornea hastalığı ve üveit tablosuyla enfeksiyöz körlüğün küresel yüküne katkı verir (Enk, 2006; Brattig et al., 2020).Bu etkenlerde patogenez, parazitin doğrudan doku invazyonu ile konak immün yanıtının tetiklediği inflamasyonu ile birlikte şekillenir. Toksoplazmozda kan-göz bariyeri bozulur, IFN γ/IL-1β gibi sitokinler parazit kontrolünde rol oynarken, aşırı yanıt retina üzerinde sekel bırakabilir (Chen et al., 2024; Pleyer et al., 2019). Toksokariyazda göz içi granülom ve traksiyonel komplikasyonlar gelişebilir (Ahn et al., 2014). Sistiserkoziste canlı kist düşük, dejeneran kist ise belirgin granülomatöz reaksiyon oluşturur; ekinokokkoziste kist rüptürü şiddetli inflamatuvar yanıta neden olabilir (Dhiman et al., 2017; Sweed et al., 2023). Tanıda klinik tipik bulgular temel olmakla birlikte seroloji, aköz/vitreus PCR, Goldmann-Witmer katsayısı ve çok modlu görüntüleme, ayırıcı tanı ve atipik sunumlarda kritik önemdedir (Sève et al., 2017; Ammar et al., 2020; Kalogeropoulos et al., 2021; Sanchez-Ovejero et al., 2020).

Finite element modeling of mechanical micromachining
    (CRC Press, 2017) Oliaei,S.N.B.; Demiral,M.
The knowledge about all these phenomena is necessary to fabricate microparts, satisfying required dimensional and geometrical tolerances and surface quality requirements. Therefore, developing predictive techniques to improve the quality of microparts has emerged as an important research area. Several approaches have been used to predict outputs of microcutting operations including analytical modeling, numerical techniques, molecular dynamics simulation, and experimental studies. As experimental studies are costly and time consuming and as they are only valid for the conditions and range of machining parameters used in the experiments, numerical methods are used as an alternative method to predict machining process outputs. © 2018 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

A Niche-Based Perspective to Stem and Cancer Stem Cells of the Lung
(Springer, 2025) Boyacıoğlu, Özge; Kalali, Berfin Deniz; Tongün, Ege; Korkusuz, Petek
Lungs carry the principle function for the conduction and exchange of air through the primary, secondary, tertiary bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli, resulting in the exchange of oxygen to carbon dioxide within the human tissues. Lung stem and progenitor cells enable differentiation of parenchymal and stromal elements and provide homeostasis and regeneration in the microenvironment against pulmonary diseases. Tumor-initiating cancer cells (TICs) refer to a subpopulation named as cancer stem cells (CSCs) of lung cancer exhibiting high self-renewal and proliferation capacity by Notch, Hippo, Hedgehog, and Wnt signaling pathways that leads to tumor development or recurrence. Lung cancer stem cells (LCSCs) are characterized by distinct genotypic or phenotypic alterations compared to healthy lung stem cells (LSCs) that provide a potential target to treat lung cancer. Therefore, understanding the cascades responsible for the transformation of healthy to CSCs is essential to develop new targeted therapy approaches. In this chapter, we precisely highlight the latest researches on LSCs and CSCs, key signaling mechanisms within the perspective of novel targeted therapy strategies. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
