    How Do Visual, Auditory and Motor Dual-Tasking Each Affect Swallowing and Chewing Function?

    Background: It can be challenging to perform a second task at the same time as swallowing. Objective(s)The study aimed to investigate the effect of visual, auditory and motor dual-tasking on swallowing and chewing function in healthy young adults. Method: Right-handed healthy adults without any psychological and cognitive problems were included in the study. Swallowing was evaluated based on the dysphagia limit in different liquid textures such as water and nectar consistencies, and chewing was evaluated by the Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids. For the second task, visual and auditory performance was assessed using reaction time, and the motor performance was assessed using a bilateral tapping task. Assessments were performed in two steps: baseline and dual-task. For baseline, all evaluation methods were applied individually. After completing the baseline assessment, dual-task assessment were carried out the following day. For dual-task assessment, the swallowing and chewing tasks were performed simultaneously with visual, auditory and motor tasks. Results: Results showed a significant decrease in dysphagia limit in the nectar consistency, and significant increase in chewing time, visual reaction time and tapping rate (right-left) when compared to baseline and dual-task conditions (chi(2)(3) = 9.61, p = .02; chi(2)(3) = 9.02, p = .02; chi(2)(3) = 28.09, p < .001; chi(2)(3) = 28.97, p < .001; chi(2)(3) = 21.56, p < .001, respectively). However, there were no differences in dysphagia limit in the water and auditory reaction time compared to baseline and dual-task conditions (chi(2)(3) = 3.18, p = .36; chi(2)(3) = 2.56, p = .50, respectively). Conclusion: Results shedding light on how simultaneous dual tasks can influence swallowing and chewing. Dual-tasking cause a decrease in both swallowing/chewing and the visual/motor performances. These results may provide valuable information for designing interventions or strategies aimed at improving or maintaining optimal swallowing and chewing during in various populations during daily life.

    Surgical Outcomes of Posterior Persistent Fetal Vasculature Syndrome: Cases With Tent-Shaped and Closed Funnel-Shaped Retinal Detachment

    Background/objectives To determine the role of vitreoretinal surgery (VRS) for two different forms of posterior persistent fetal vasculature syndrome (PFVS); with tent-shaped tractional retinal detachment (TRD) and closed funnel-shaped TRD. Subjects/methods Retrospective, single surgeon, consecutive case series of 52 eyes of 44 patients with posterior PFVS who underwent VRS. Cases were divided into "tent-shaped TRD" and "funnel-shaped TRD" groups based on the preoperative TRD configuration. Associated anomalies, functional and anatomical outcomes were evaluated. The cosmetic appearance was defined as poor if there was phthisis bulbi, gross buphthalmos, or corneal opacification; acceptable if there was apparent leukocoria; and excellent if none were noted at the last follow-up. Results Thirty eyes of 29 patients presented with tent-shaped TRD; 70% of which obtained counting fingers or better vision and 90% showed significant reversal of tenting achieving retinal reattachment. The cosmetic appearance was excellent in 87%. Two eyes (7%) became phthisic. Twenty-two eyes of 15 patients presented with funnel-shaped TRD and leukocoria; 45% achieved LP vision and 70% of patients with bilateral pathology had LP in at least one eye. The cosmetic appearance was acceptable to excellent in 73%. Three eyes (14%) became phthisic, one (5%) of which required enucleation. The median follow-up time was 16 (6-71) months. Conclusions VRS often provides functional vision and anatomy in posterior PFVS with tent-shaped TRD morphology. In the funnel-shaped TRD morphology, where no treatment has historically been recommended, surgery may be considered with an aim of restoring light perception and globe preservation, particularly in bilateral cases.

    Encoding the Future: Successful Processing of Intentions Engages Predictive Brain Networks

    Evidence from cognitive, patient and neuroimaging research indicates that "remembering to remember" intentions, i.e., prospective memory (PM) retrieval, requires both general memory systems involving the medial temporal lobes and an executive system involving rostral PFC (BA 10). However, it is not known how prospective memories are initially formed. Using fMRI, we investigated whether brain activity during encoding Of future intentions and present actions differentially predicted later memory for those same intentions (PM) and actions (retrospective memory). We identified two significant patterns of neural activity: a network linked to overall memory and another linked specifically to PM. While overall memory success was predicted by temporal lobe activations that included the hippocampus, PM success was also uniquely predicted by activations in additional regions, including left rostrolateral PFC and the right parahippocampal gyrus. This finding extends the role of these structures to the formation of individual intentions. It also provides the first evidence that PM encoding, like PM retrieval, is supported by both a common episodic memory network and an executive network specifically recruited by future-oriented processing. Moreover, Lyapunov-type and Hartman-type inequalities are obtained when the conformable derivative T-alpha(a) is replaced by a sequential conformable derivative T-alpha(a) circle T-alpha(a), alpha is an element of (1/2,1]. The potential functions r(1), r(2) as well as the forcing term g require no sign restrictions. The obtained inequalities generalize some existing results in the literature.

    Urinalysis of Individuals With Renal Hyperfiltration Using Atr-Ftir Spectroscopy

    Abnormal increased glomerular filtration rate (GFR), otherwise known as renal hyperfiltration (RHf), is associated with an increased risk of chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular mortality. Although it is not considered as a disease alone in medicine today, early detection of RHf is essential to reducing risk in a timely manner. However, detecting RHf is a challenge since it does not have a practical biochemical marker that can be followed or quantified. In this study, we tested the ability of ATR-FTIR spectroscopy to distinguish 17 individuals with RHf (hyperfiltraters; RHf (+)), from 20 who have normal GFR (normofiltraters; RHf(-)), using urine samples. Spectra collected from hyperfiltraters were significantly different from the control group at positions 1621, 1390, 1346, 933 and 783/cm. Intensity changes at these positions could be followed directly from the absorbance spectra without the need for pre-processing. They were tentatively attributed to urea, citrate, creatinine, phosphate groups, and uric acid, respectively. Using principal component analysis (PCA), major peaks of the second derivative forms for the classification of two groups were determined. Peaks at 1540, 1492, 1390, 1200, 1000 and 840/cm were significantly different between the two groups. Statistical analysis showed that the spectra of normofiltraters are similar; however, those of hyperfiltraters show diversity at multiple positions that can be observed both from the absorbance spectra and the second derivative profiles. This observation implies that RHf can simultaneously affect the excretion of many substances, and that a spectroscopic analysis of urine can be used as a rapid and non-invasive pre-screening tool.

    Complete Dehydrogenation of Hydrazine Borane on Manganese Oxide Nanorod-Supported Ni@ir Core-Shell Nanoparticles

    Hydrazine borane (HB; N2H4BH3) has been considered to be one of the most promising solid chemical hydrogen storage materials owing to its high hydrogen capacity and stability under ambient conditions. Despite that, the high purity of hydrogen production from the complete dehydrogenation of HB stands as a major problem that needs to be solved for the convenient use of HB in on-demand hydrogen production systems. In this study, we describe the development of a new catalytic material comprised of bimetallic Ni@Ir core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) supported on OMS-2-type manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve nanorods (Ni@Ir/OMS-2), which can reproducibly be prepared by following a synthesis protocol including (i) the oleylamine-mediated preparation of colloidal Ni@Ir NPs and (ii) wet impregnation of these ex situ synthesized Ni@Ir NPs onto the OMS-2 surface. The characterization of Ni@Ir/OMS-2 has been done by using various spectroscopic and visualization techniques, and their results have revealed the formation of well-dispersed Ni@Ir core-shell NPs on the surface of OMS-2. The catalytic employment of Ni@Ir/OMS-2 in the dehydrogenation of HB showed that Ni-0.22@Ir-0.78/OMS-2 exhibited high dehydrogenation selectivity (>99%) at complete conversion with a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 2590 h(-1) at 323 K, which is the highest activity value among all reported catalysts for the complete dehydrogenation of HB. Furthermore, the Ni-0.22@Ir-0.78/OMS-2 catalyst enables facile recovery and high stability against agglomeration and leaching, which make it a reusable catalyst in the complete dehydrogenation of HB. The studies reported herein also include the collection of wealthy kinetic data to determine the activation parameters for Ni-0.22@Ir-0.78/OMS-2-catalyzed dehydrogenation of HB.

    The Psychological Science Accelerator's Covid-19 Rapid-Response Dataset

    In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Psychological Science Accelerator coordinated three large-scale psychological studies to examine the effects of loss-gain framing, cognitive reappraisals, and autonomy framing manipulations on behavioral intentions and affective measures. The data collected (April to October 2020) included specific measures for each experimental study, a general questionnaire examining health prevention behaviors and COVID-19 experience, geographical and cultural context characterization, and demographic information for each participant. Each participant started the study with the same general questions and then was randomized to complete either one longer experiment or two shorter experiments. Data were provided by 73,223 participants with varying completion rates. Participants completed the survey from 111 geopolitical regions in 44 unique languages/dialects. The anonymized dataset described here is provided in both raw and processed formats to facilitate re-use and further analyses. The dataset offers secondary analytic opportunities to explore coping, framing, and self-determination across a diverse, global sample obtained at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which can be merged with other time-sampled or geographic data.

    Aptamer Hybrid Nanocomplexes as Targeting Components for Antibiotic/Gene Delivery Systems and Diagnostics: a Review

    With the passage of time and more advanced societies, there is a greater emergence and incidence of disease and necessity for improved treatments. In this respect, nowadays, aptamers, with their better efficiency at diagnosing and treating diseases than antibodies, are at the center of attention. Here, in this review, we first investigate aptamer function in various fields (such as the detection and remedy of pathogens, modification of nanoparticles, antibiotic delivery and gene delivery). Then, we present aptamer-conjugated nanocomplexes as the main and efficient factor in gene delivery. Finally, we focus on the targeted co-delivery of genes and drugs by nanocomplexes, as a new exciting approach for cancer treatment in the decades ahead to meet our growing societal needs.

    The Pimpled Gold Nanosphere: a Superior Candidate for Plasmonic Photothermal Therapy

    Background: The development of highly efficient nanoparticles to convert light to heat for anti-cancer applications is quite a challenging field of research. Methods: In this study, we synthesized unique pimpled gold nanospheres (PGNSs) for plasmonic photothermal therapy (PPTT). The light-to-heat conversion capability of PGNSs and PPTT damage at the cellular level were investigated using a tissue phantom model. The ability of PGNSs to induce robust cellular damage was studied during cytotoxicity tests on colorectal adenocarcinoma (DLD-1) and fibroblast cell lines. Further, a numerical model of plasmonic (COMSOL Multiphysics) properties was used with the PPTT experimental assays. Results: A low cytotoxic effect of thiolated polyethylene glycol (SH-PEG400-SH-) was observed which improved the biocompatibility of PGNSs to maintain 89.4% cell viability during cytometry assays (in terms of fibroblast cells for 24 hrs at a concentration of 300 mu g/mL). The heat generated from the nanoparticle-mediated phantom models resulted in Delta T=30 degrees C, Delta T=23.1 degrees C and Delta T=21 degrees C for the PGNSs, AuNRs, and AuNPs, respectively (at a 300 mu g/mL concentration and for 325 sec). For the in vitro assays of PPTT on cancer cells, the PGNS group induced a 68.78% lethality (apoptosis) on DLD-1 cells. Fluorescence microscopy results showed the destruction of cell membranes and nuclei for the PPTT group. Experiments further revealed a penetration depth of sufficient PPTT damage in a physical tumor model after hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining through pathological studies (at depths of 2, 3 and 4 cm). Severe structural damages were observed in the tissue model through an 808-nm laser exposed to the PGNSs. Conclusion: Collectively, such results show much promise for the use of the present PGNSs and photothermal therapy for numerous anti-cancer applications.
