Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 9Benchmarking Classification Models for Cell Viability on Novel Cancer Image Datasets(Bentham Science Publ Ltd, 2019) Ozkan, Akin; Isgor, Sultan Belgin; Sengul, Gokhan; Isgor, Yasemin GulgunBackground: Dye-exclusion based cell viability analysis has been broadly used in cell biology including anticancer drug discovery studies. Viability analysis refers to the whole decision making process for the distinction of dead cells from live ones. Basically, cell culture samples are dyed with a special stain called trypan blue, so that the dead cells are selectively colored to darkish. This distinction provides critical information that may be used to expose influences of the studied drug on considering cell culture including cancer. Examiner's experience and tiredness substantially affect the consistency throughout the manual observation of cell viability. The unsteady results of cell viability may end up with biased experimental results accordingly. Therefore, a machine learning based automated decision-making procedure is inevitably needed to improve consistency of the cell viability analysis. Objective: In this study, we investigate various combinations of classifiers and feature extractors (i.e. classification models) to maximize the performance of computer vision-based viability analysis. Method: The classification models are tested on novel hemocytometer image datasets which contain two types of cancer cell images, namely, caucasian promyelocytic leukemia (HL60), and chronic myelogenous leukemia (K562). Results: From the experimental results, k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Random Forest (RF) by combining Local Phase Quantization (LPQ) achieve the lowest misclassification rates that are 0.031 and 0.082, respectively. Conclusion: The experimental results show that KNN and RF with LPQ can be powerful alternatives to the conventional manual cell viability analysis. Also, the collected datasets are released from the "biochem.atilim.edu.tr/datasets/ " web address publically to academic studies.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 9Electrical Properties of Bi1.5znsb1.5< Pyrochlore Ceramics(Wiley-v C H verlag Gmbh, 2003) Kayed, TS; Mergen, ABi1.5ZnSb1.5O7 pyrochlore samples were prepared by solid state reaction method. They were examined by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Single phase, belongs to the cubic pyrochlore structure, with a lattice parameter of 10.442 Angstrom and grain size that varies from 16 to 20 mum was obtained. The electrical properties were measured at different temperatures in the range 15-330 K under different applied magnetic fields up 1.4 T. In our measurements for Hall coefficient, Hall resistivity, and mobility; we noticed an anomalous behavior at two temperatures (around 250 and 310 K) which was supported by the I-V measurements (double transition of the slope of I-V characteristics (beta) at the same temperatures). This was discussed in terms of polarization phenomenon and mixed ionic-electronic conduction. (C) 2003 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We also prove that two curve complexes are isomorphic if and only if the underlying surfaces are diffeomorphic.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 8It Service Management (itsm) Education and Research: Global View(Tempus Publications, 2015) Yazici, Ali; Mishra, Alok; Kontogiorgis, Paul; Software EngineeringThis article provides an overview of Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) and investigates the education and research activities in this discipline from a global perspective. The objectives of the study are to inform the training organizations (e.g., universities, training institutes) on the current status of the educational activities in ITSM at undergraduate and graduate levels; and to guide the researchers by providing quantitative data on the research activities conducted in the field. In the educational arena, the statistical data showed that, stand-alone undergraduate/graduate programs are becoming popular among the high school graduates with elevated expectations of the market place, in addition to the appreciation of the IT service management area by the IT sector and the public. The results of the research findings provide guidelines for curriculum developers in the design and implementation of courses for the de facto interdisciplinary ITSM degree/certificate training programs and motivate and guide the researchers by providing the most recent quantitative data on the ITSM field. It is one of the first studies to provide education and research trends in ITSM area. The present study adds to this important stream of emerging research area and contributes by advancing the understanding of ITSM education and research issues. This paper advances the current state of knowledge on ITSM education and explores recent research trends in this area which is becoming standard towards providing quality IT services in enterprises.Article Citation - WoS: 16Citation - Scopus: 16A Gap in the Paper "a Note on Cone Metric Fixed Point Theory and Its Equivalence" [nonlinear Anal. 72(5), (2010), 2259-2261](Gazi Univ, 2011) Abdeljawad, Thabet; Karapinar, ErdalThere is a gap in Theorem 2.2 of the paper of Du [1]. F.; Sahin, Ethem Ilhan; Emek, Mehriban; Kartal, Mesut; Kargin, SerdarIn this work, we have explored the antimony doping effects on the structural and dielectric properties of Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O-3 ceramics (BZN). The ceramics displayed perovskite structures with a lattice constant that decreases with increasing Sb content. The antimony solubility limit of the BZN ceramics is x < 0.50. Belowthis limit and in the range of 0.30 <= x <= 0.40, the microstrain, the dislocation density and the stacking faults decreased and the crystallite size increases with increasing Sb content in the composition of BZN. When the limit is exceeded minor phases are predicted by software analysis and confirmed by the experimental techniques. The presence of these phases is also verified by the scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy techniques. Increasing the Sb content is observed to decrease the value of the dielectric constant. The Sb doped BZN ceramics exhibits high dielectric quality factors that nominate it for applications in electronics as radio waves resonators.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4The Effect of Post-Learning Arousal on Memory in Education(inderscience Enterprises Ltd, 2015) Ozcelik, ErolCognitive psychological and neurobiological studies have shown that presenting emotional events after learning enhances memory performance. It has been suggested that arousal induced by emotional stimuli modulates memory consolidation. However, little is known about the memory consolidation process in education. The goal of this study is to investigate the effect of post-learning arousal on memory consolidation in an applied educational setting. Participants were presented with either emotionally arousing or neutral pictures after they studied the instructional materials. Their memory for instructional materials was tested by an immediate free-recall test and a recognition test administered after one week. The results suggest that presenting emotionally arousing pictures compared to neutral pictures enhanced recognition memory performance. These findings support that emotional stimuli facilitated consolidation of memory traces. By incorporating theories in cognitive psychology and neurobiology and using them in an educational setting, this study proposes a novel way to enhance learning through emotional arousal.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 7Jmathnorm: a Database Normalization Tool Using Mathematica(Springer-verlag Berlin, 2007) Yazici, Ali; Karakaya, ZiyaThis paper is about designing a complete interactive tool, named JMathNorm, for relational database (RDB) normalization using Mathematica. It is an extension of the prototype developed by the same authors [1] with the inclusion of Second Normal Form (2NF), and Boyce-Codd Normal Form (BCNF) in addition to the existing Third normal Form (3NF) module. The tool developed in this study is complete and can be used for real-time database design as well as an aid in teaching fundamental concepts of DB normalization to students with limited mathematical background. JMathNorm also supports interactive use of modules for experimenting the fundamental set operations such as closure, and full closure together with modules to obtain the minimal cover of the functional dependency set and testing an attribute for a candidate key. JMathNorm's GUI interface is written in Java and utilizes Mathematica's Mink facility to drive the Mathematica kernel.
