    Electrospun Essential Oil-Polycaprolactone Nanofibers as Antibiofilm Surfaces Against Clinical Candida Tropicalis Isolates

    ObjectiveAs an approach to prevent biofilm infections caused by Candida tropicalis on various surfaces, determination of effect of biodegradable polycaprolactone nanofibers (PCLNFs) with different concentrations of two different essential oils were tested in this study.ResultsBoth of the tested essential oils exhibited antifungal effect (minimal inhibitory concentration; 0.25-0.49 mu L/mL, minimal fungicidal concentration; 0.25-0.49 mu L/mL, depending on the C. tropicalis strain) (Zone of inhibition caused by 500 L/mL concentration of oils; 28-56mm). 0, 2, 4% clove oil PCLNFs and 0, 2, 4% red thyme oil-PCLNFs were free from bead formation and uniform in diameter. Diameters of all essential oil containing PCLNFs were ranged from 760 to 1100nm and were significantly different from 0% essential oil-PCLNF (P<0.05). 0, 2, 4% clove oil-PCLNFs were significantly more hydrophobic compared to 8% clove oil-PCLNF (P<0.01), whereas 0% and 2% red thyme oil-PCLNFs were significantly more hydrophobic compared to 4% and 8% red thyme oil PCLNFs (P<0.01). Highest amount of biofilm inhibition was observed by 4% clove oil-PCLNF and by 4% red thyme oil-PCLNF.ConclusionsClove and red thyme oils may be used not only as antifungals but also as biofilm inhibitive agents on surfaces of biomaterials that are frequently contaminated by C. tropicalis, when they are incorporated into PCLNFs.

    Fractional Unit-Root Tests Allowing for a Fractional Frequency Flexible Fourier Form Trend: Predictability of Covid-19

    In this study we propose a fractional frequency flexible Fourier form fractionally integrated ADF unit-root test, which combines the fractional integration and nonlinear trend as a form of the Fourier function. We provide the asymptotics of the newly proposed test and investigate its small-sample properties. Moreover, we show the best estimators for both fractional frequency and fractional difference operator for our newly proposed test. Finally, an empirical study demonstrates that not considering the structural break and fractional integration simultaneously in the testing process may lead to misleading results about the stochastic behavior of the Covid-19 pandemic.

    We state and prove new generalized Lyapunov-type and Hartman-type inequalities fora conformable boundary value problem of order alpha is an element of (1,2] with mixed non-linearities of the form ((T alpha X)-X-a)(t) + r(1)(t)vertical bar X(t)vertical bar(eta-1) X(t) + r(2)(t)vertical bar x(t)vertical bar(delta-1) X(t) = g(t), t is an element of (a, b), satisfying the Dirichlet boundary conditions x(a) = x(b) = 0, where r(1), r(2), and g are real-valued integrable functions, and the non-linearities satisfy the conditions 0 < eta < 1 < delta < 2. Moreover, Lyapunov-type and Hartman-type inequalities are obtained when the conformable derivative T-alpha(a) is replaced by a sequential conformable derivative T-alpha(a) circle T-alpha(a), alpha is an element of (1/2,1]. The potential functions r(1), r(2) as well as the forcing term g require no sign restrictions. The obtained inequalities generalize some existing results in the literature.

    Which Is Better To Predict Erectile Dysfunction and Male Sexual Function in the Context of Metabolic Syndrome: Triglyceride-Glucose Index or Visceral Adiposity Index?: a Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study

    PurposeMany factors influence male sexual function, including metabolic disorders such as metabolic syndrome (MetS). We aimed to investigate the effects of two metabolic indices, the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and the visceral adiposity index (VAI), on male sexual function.MethodsA total of 400 men having sexual dysfunction were included. Anthropological data, comorbidities were recorded. Serum total testosterone, prolactin, and estradiol levels were recorded. Sex-specific VAI was calculated using the [(WC/39.68) + (1.88xMI)] x (TG/1.03) x (1.31/HDL) formula and using Ln (fasting triglycerides) x (fasting glucose)/2] formula, TyG index was calculated. Turkish-validated 15-item long-form of the International Index of Erectile Dysfunction (IIEF) questionnaire and male sexual health questionnaire (MSHQ) were used for erectile function and ejaculatory function, respectively. The ROC analysis was used to evaluate the predictive abilities of TyG and VAI cut-off values for ED risk.ResultsA higher TyG index and VAI were associated with an increased risk of ED. The presence of MetS further worsened sexual function, with lower scores in sexual satisfaction, orgasm, desire, and general satisfaction. The TyG index and VAI showed similar predictive abilities for ED. Patients with MetS had worse ejaculation quality compared to those without MetS.ConclusionsThese findings highlight the potential of the TyG index and VAI as convenient tools for predicting and assessing sexual dysfunction in men, particularly in the context of metabolic disorders. Early detection and intervention for metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance may help to mitigate their negative impact on male sexual function.

    Evaluating Anterior Segment Stability and Corneal Endothelium After Prolene Gonioscopy Assisted Transluminal Trabeculotomy (gatt) in Open-Angle Glaucoma

    Introduction This study investigates the short-term effects of prolene gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) on anterior segment parameters and corneal endothelium in patients with open-angle glaucoma. Methods This retrospective study included 30 eyes from 30 patients who underwent GATT surgery. Demographic data, ophthalmological examination findings, and intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements using a Goldman applanation tonometer were recorded. Scheimpflug images were acquired at the pre-operative stage, as well as on the 1st day, 1st week, and 1st month postoperatively. Corneal endothelial cell counts were obtained via specular microscopy. Results The mean age of patients was 60.3 +/- 15.5 years. Anterior chamber depth and central corneal thickness increased on the 1st postoperative day (p:0.002, p < 0.001, respectively). Changes in anterior chamber depth values at the postoperative 1st week and 1st month compared to baseline were not statistically significant. Central corneal thickness decreased significantly at the 1st postoperative month compared to baseline (p:0.007). Corneal endothelial cell counts at the 1st month were comparable to baseline values (p:0.936). Conclusion Our findings reveal that prolene gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy induces temporary changes in anterior segment parameters but preserves corneal endothelial cell count within the first month, suggesting a promising profile for GATT in glaucoma management.

    The Relationship between Perinatal Grief and Spiritual Well-Being in Women Experiencing Termination due to Fetal Anomaly in Türkiye

    Pregnancy termination is a significant event in women's lives and can be considered a traumatic experience that can assess grief reactions. Couples who accept the decision to have a medical termination due to fetal anomaly face not only anxiety and feelings of loss, but also difficulties adapting to and coping with the termination process. This study aims to examine the relationship between perinatal grief and spiritual well-being in women who experience termination due to fetal anomaly. The study sample consisted of 256 women who had undergone termination during pregnancy. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentage, mean, standard deviation), the Mann-Whitney U test for independent samples, the Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman correlation, and multiple linear regression analyses. The participants' mean score on the Perinatal Grief Scale was 112.87 +/- 15.04. The spiritual well-being scale subscale scores were 56.13 +/- 8.69 for the transcendence subscale, 25.27 +/- 2.94 for the harmony with nature subscale, and 26.58 +/- 3.18 for the anomie subscale. The correlation between the mean scores of the scales indicated that perinatal grief level was positively and significantly related to both the transcendence (r = 0.454; p < .001) and harmony with nature (r = 0.571; p < .001) subscales, while there was a strong negative correlation between perinatal grief and the anomie subscale (r = -0.762; p < .001). In conclusion, the study results indicate that perinatal grief is significantly related to various dimensions of spiritual well-being. These findings support the idea that supporting spiritual well-being in individuals experiencing perinatal grief can strengthen psychosocial adjustment.

    Endogenous and exogenous cannabinoids modulate many physiological and pathological processes by binding classical cannabinoid receptors 1 (CB1) or 2 (CB2) or non-cannabinoid receptors. Cannabinoids are known to exert antiproliferative, apoptotic, anti-migratory and anti-invasive effect on cancer cells by inducing or inhibiting various signaling cascades.     Detection of the Glenoid Bare Spot by Non-Arthrographic Mr Imaging, Conventional Mr Arthrography, and 3d High-Resolution T1-Weighted Vibe Mr Arthrography: Comparison With Ct Arthrography

    ObjectivesTo determine the diagnostic accuracy of non-arthrographic MR imaging, conventional MR arthrography, and 3D T1-weighted volumetric interpolated breath-hold examination (VIBE) MR arthrography sequences as compared with a CT arthrography in the diagnosis of glenoid bare spot.MethodsA retrospective study of 216 patients who underwent non-arthrographic MR imaging, conventional MR arthrography, VIBE MRI arthrography, and CT arthrogram between January 2011 and March 2022 was conducted. The diagnostic accuracy of non-arthrographic MR imaging, direct MR arthrography, and VIBE MRI arthrography in the detection of glenoid bare spot was compared with that of CT arthrography. All studies were reviewed by 2 MSK radiologists. Interobserver agreement for MR imaging and MR arthrographic findings was calculated.ResultsSixteen of 216 patients were excluded. Twenty-three of 200 shoulders had glenoid bare spot on CT arthrographic images. The glenoid bare spot was detected in 11 (47.8%) and 7 (30.4%) patients on conventional non-arthrographic MR images and in 18 (78.3%) and 16 (69.6%) patients on conventional MR arthrograms by observers 1 and 2, respectively. Both observers separately described the bare spot in 22 of 23 patients (95.7%) on 3D volumetric MR arthrograms. Interobserver variabilities were fair agreement for conventional non-arthrographic MR imaging (kappa = 0.35, p < 0.05), moderate agreement for conventional MR arthrogram (kappa = 0.50, p < 0.05), and near-perfect agreement for 3D volumetric MR arthrogram reading (kappa = 0.87, p < 0.05).ConclusionsA 3D high-resolution T1-weighted VIBE MR arthrography sequence may yield diagnostic performance that is comparable with that of CT arthrography in the diagnosis of glenoid bare spot.

    A Computational Study on 4,7-Di(furan Monomer and Its Oligomers

    The energy gap, Eg, between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels that determines the electronic and optical properties of 4,7-di(furan-2yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (FSF) polymer is calculated by performing quantum chemical calculations. First, we theoretically investigated the most stable conformers of FSF monomer and its corresponding oligomers at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) and B3LYP/LANL2DZ levels of theory. We reveal the theoretical molecular structure of this very recently synthesized novel monomer and its oligomers for the first time in the literature. Our results from the B3LYP/6-31G(d) calculations indicated that FSF polymer has a low HOMO-LUMO gap of 1.55 eV to be in good agreement with the experiments. Experimental design and synthesis of novel conjugated polymers require time-consuming and expensive procedures. The findings from this study are promising for the use of computational methods in the design of the novel conjugated polymers, and help to narrow the materials to be used in design and synthesis of conjugated polymers with desired properties.
