(Turkish League Against Rheumatism, 2023) Altan, Lale; Ökmen, Burcu Metin; Tuncer, Tiraje; Sindel, Dilşad; Çay, Hasan Fatih; Hepgüler, Simin; Uğurlu, Hatice
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to contribute further to this debated topic by investigating the correlation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings with the clinical picture in lumbar spondylosis patients. Patients and methods: This multicenter retrospective study (as part of the epidemiological project of the TLAR-OASG [Turkish League Against Rheumatism-Osteoarthritis Study Group]) included 514 patients (101 males, 413 females; mean age: 63.6±10.8 years; range, 40 to 85 years) who were diagnosed as lumbar spondylosis by clinical examination and direct X-ray between December 2016 and June 2018. Demographic characteristics of patients, Visual Analog Scale for pain, presence of radiating pain, Roland-Morris disability questionnaire, straight leg raise test, deep tendon reflexes, neurogenic intermittent claudication symptoms, any decrease of muscle strength, and abnormality of sensation were recorded. Lumbar MRI findings of the patients were recorded as positive or negative in terms of disc herniation, intervertebral disc degeneration, root compression, osteophytes, spinal stenosis. Statistical analysis was done to assess the correlation between the clinical symptoms, physical examination, and MRI findings. Results: Correlation analysis of the MRI results and the clinical findings showed a significant correlation between straight leg raise test and root compression (p<0.001, r=0.328) and a significant correlation between neurogenic intermittent claudication and spinal stenosis (p<0.001, r=0.376). Roland-Morris disability questionnaire had a significant correlation with all MRI findings (p<0.05, r<0.200). Conclusion: The results of this study corroborate the notion that diligent patient history and physical examination are more valuable than MRI findings, even though a higher incidence of abnormal MRI findings have been obtained in patients with disability and dermatomal radiating pain.

(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2025) Ucak, S.; Yegin, Z.; Yurt, M.N.Z.; Sudagidan, M.; Altunbas, O.; Ozalp, V.C.
Microorganisms linked to the grapevine, Vitis vinifera, can impact crop quality, plant growth, and human and plant health. This study examined the bacterial community structures of brined grapevine leaves (n = 56) taken from seven distinct regions in Türkiye using next-generation sequencing technology. Investigations were also conducted into the samples' chemical properties. Firmicutes was the dominant phylum, followed by Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Bacillaceae was the predominant family in the analyzed samples, followed by Clostridiaceae, Peptostreptococcaceae, and Enterobacteriaceae. Bacillus was the dominant genus, followed by Lysinibacillus and Clostridium sensu stricto. The samples exhibited differences in terms of pH, total acidity, and salt content. The pH values of the brined grapevine leaves ranged from 2.31 to 6.91, the acidity levels ranged from 0.09% to 1.80%, and the salt percentages ranged from 3.39% to 49.14%. This research provides pioneering information for bacterial community analysis of brined grapevine leaves. © 2025 Wiley-VHCA AG, Zurich, Switzerland.

Left Ventricular Geometry as a Predictor of Carotid Artery Stenosis Severity in Patients Undergoing Carotid Artery Stenting
(Wiley, 2020) Karaduman, Bilge Duran; Ayhan, Huseyin; Keles, Telat; Bozkurt, Engin
Background and Aim Cerebrovascular diseases are the second most common cause of death worldwide. Moderate and severe carotid artery stenosis causes nearly 10% of all strokes. LV geometry is a familiar prognostic and diagnostic factor in several populations; yet, data on its role in carotid artery stenosis are unknown. In our study, we investigated the prognostic value of LV geometry in predicting carotid artery stenosis severity in patients undergoing carotid artery stenting. Methods Patients who underwent carotid artery stenting between January 2012 and January 2016 at our tertiary care center were evaluated retrospectively. Two hundred fifty-five patients who underwent carotid artery stenting were included in the study. Accessible echocardiographic documentation of ninety-eight patients was accessed and evaluated. Results LV normal geometry was detected in 37 (37.7%) of the 98 carotid artery stenting (CAS) patients, concentric hypertrophy in 13 (13.2%), eccentric hypertrophy in 9 (9.1%), and concentric remodeling in 39 (39.7%). By a majority, distal filter was used in normal geometry and eccentric hypertrophy groups (82.9% vs 100%, P: .017). Considering the relationship between carotid artery stenosis severity and LV geometry, we determined that the stenosis severity was statistically significantly higher in the concentric hypertrophy group (p:0.012). However, although no complications were detected in the concentric hypertrophy group, it did not reach statistical significance between the groups (P: .058). LVMi and as expected, Doppler velocity showed a significant correlation with stenosis severity (r = .23 vs .54; P: .021, <.001, respectively). Conclusion Echocardiographic evaluation of LV geometry provided prognostic information in the development of carotid artery stenosis. Abnormal LV geometry is an independent predictor in detecting the severity of carotid artery stenosis undergoing carotid artery stenting.

Paraoxonase and Oxidative Stress Changes in Left and Right Ventricles of Exhaustively Exercised Rats
(Canadian Science Publishing, 2021) Sarikaya, Badegul; Runa, Metin; Dayanir, Duygu; Gunduztepe, Yasemin; Pinar, Lamia
Exhaustive exercise can cause subclinical inflammation to the heart, as it is an oxidative tissue that works continuously. The effect of exhaustive exercise on left and right ventricles (LVs, RVs) may be different. It is claimed that paraoxonase-1 (PON1), an antioxidant enzyme, has a cardioprotective effect on oxidative stress. Rats were separated as non-exercised controls (Con), those euthanized immediately after (E-0) and 24 h after exhaustive exercise (E-24). Cardiac troponin-I (cTnI), total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), PON1 activities, and histological findings in LV and RV of the exhausted rats were evaluated. TAS and PON1 levels were lower in LVs compared with RVs of all groups. TOS levels were high in LVs compared with RVs of all groups. In LVs, TAS levels decreased significantly in the E-0 group while PON1 activity decreased in E-0 and E-24 groups compared with controls. In LVs, TOS levels decreased significantly in E-0 and E-24 groups, but in RVs a decrease was seen only in the E-0 group. cTnI levels increased significantly in the E-0 group and decreased to control levels in the E-24 group. Considering the histological and biochemical findings, exhaustive exercise affected the heart to the maximum during and just after exhaustion, and LV was influenced more than RV.

Biomechanical Comparison of Sinus Floor Elevation and Alternative Treatment Methods for Dental Implant Placement
(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2017) Kucukkurt, Sercan; Alpaslan, Goekhan; Kurt, Ahmet
Objective: In this study, we compared the success of sinus lifting and alternative treatment methods in applying dental implants in cases lacking adequate bone due to pneumatization of the maxillary sinus. Methods: In a computer environment, 3D models were created using computerized tomography data from a patient. Additionally, implants and abutments were scanned at the macroscopic level, and the resulting images were transferred to the 3D models. Five different models were examined: a control model, lateral sinus lifting (LSL), short dental implant placement (SIP), tilted implant placement (TIP) and distal prosthetic cantilever (DC) use. Vertical and oblique forces were applied in each model. The compression, tension and von Mises stresses in each model were analyzed by implementing a finite element analysis method. Results: In our study, the LSL method was observed to be the closest to the control model. The TIP model showed high stress values under conditions of oblique forces but showed successful results under conditions of vertical forces, and the opposite results were observed in the SIP model. The DC model provided the least successful results among all models. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, the LSL method should be the first choice among treatment options. Considering its successful results under conditions of oblique forces, the SIP method may be preferable to the TIP method. In contrast, every effort should be made to avoid the use of DCs.

Evaluating Anterior Segment Stability and Corneal Endothelium After Prolene Gonioscopy Assisted Transluminal Trabeculotomy (gatt) in Open-Angle Glaucoma
(Springer, 2024) Aribas, Yavuz Kemal; Aktas, Zeynep; Ertop, Mestan
Introduction This study investigates the short-term effects of prolene gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) on anterior segment parameters and corneal endothelium in patients with open-angle glaucoma. Methods This retrospective study included 30 eyes from 30 patients who underwent GATT surgery. Demographic data, ophthalmological examination findings, and intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements using a Goldman applanation tonometer were recorded. Scheimpflug images were acquired at the pre-operative stage, as well as on the 1st day, 1st week, and 1st month postoperatively. Corneal endothelial cell counts were obtained via specular microscopy. Results The mean age of patients was 60.3 +/- 15.5 years. Anterior chamber depth and central corneal thickness increased on the 1st postoperative day (p:0.002, p < 0.001, respectively). Changes in anterior chamber depth values at the postoperative 1st week and 1st month compared to baseline were not statistically significant. Central corneal thickness decreased significantly at the 1st postoperative month compared to baseline (p:0.007). Corneal endothelial cell counts at the 1st month were comparable to baseline values (p:0.936). Conclusion Our findings reveal that prolene gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy induces temporary changes in anterior segment parameters but preserves corneal endothelial cell count within the first month, suggesting a promising profile for GATT in glaucoma management.

A platinum blue complex exerts its cytotoxic activity via DNA damage and induces apoptosis in cancer cells
(Wiley, 2017) Adiguzel, Zelal; Ozalp-Yaman, Seniz; Celik, Gokalp; Salem, Safia; Bagci-Onder, Tugba; Senbabaoglu, Filiz; Acilan, Ceyda
Here, we describe the characteristics of a Pt-blue complex [Pt-4(2-atp)(8)(H2O)(OH)] (2-atp: 2-aminothiophenol) as a prodrug for its DNA-binding properties and its use in cancer therapy. The nature of the interaction between the Pt-blue complex and DNA was evaluated based on spectroscopic measurements, the electronic absorption spectra, thermal behavior, viscosity, fluorometric titration, and agarose gel electrophoresis. Our results suggested that the compound was able to partially intercalate DNA and appeared to induce both single- and double-stranded breaks (DBS) on DNA in vitro, but no DSBs in cells. The ability of the compound to induce DNA damage was dependent on reactive oxygen species (ROS) in vitro. There was also elevated formation of ROS and SOD expression in response to drug treatment in cell culture. The complex was found to be more cytotoxic to cancer cells in comparison with noncancer controls using WST-1 assay. The mean of cell death was determined to be apoptosis as assessed via biochemical, morphological, and molecular observations, including DNA condensation/fragmentation analysis, live cell imaging microscopy, TUNEL analyses, and increase in the levels of pro-apoptotic genes such as Bag3, Bak, Bik, Bmf, and Hrk. Hence, the Pt-blue complex under study grants premise for further studies.

Information-Theoretic Approach in Allometric Scaling Relations of Dna and Proteins
    (Wiley, 2022) Adiguzel, Yekbun
Allometric scaling relations can be observed in between molecular parameters. Hence, we looked for presence of such relation among sizes (i.e., lengths) of proteins and genes. Protein lengths exist in the literature as the number of amino acids. They can also be derived from the mRNA lengths. Here, we looked for allometric scaling relation by using such data and simultaneously, the data was compared with the sizes of genes and proteins that were obtained from our modified information-theoretic approach. Results implied presence of scaling relation in the calculated results. This was expected due to the implemented modification in the information-theoretic calculation. Relation in the literature-based data was lacking high goodness of fit value. It could be due to physical factors and selective pressures, which ended up in deviations of the literature-sourced values from those in the model. Genome size is correlated with cell size. Intracellular volume, which is related to the DNA size, would require certain number of proteins, the sizes of which can therefore be correlated with the protein sizes. Cell sizes, genome sizes, and average protein and gene sizes, along with the number of proteins, namely the expression levels of the genes, are the physical factors, and the molecular factors influence those physical factors. The selective pressures on those can act through the connection between those physical factors and limit the dynamic ranges. Biological measures could be prone to such forces and are likely to deviate from expected models, regardless of the validity of assumptions, unless those are also implemented in the models. Yet, present discrepancies could be pointing at the need for model improvement, data imperfection, invalid assumptions, etc. Still, current work highlights possible use of information-theoretic approach in allometric scaling relations' studies.

Analyzing Two Decades of Intimate Partner Femicide-Suicides in T?rkiye*
(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2023) Cavlak, Mehmet; Odabasi, Aysun Balseven; Mutlu, Niluefer Dilara Ar; Erbaydar, Nueket Paksoy
Intimate partner femicide-suicide (IPF-S) is an understudied subgroup of homicide-suicide deaths. Limited research has been conducted on IPF-Ss in the Eastern Mediterranean region. This study thus aimed to evaluate the characteristics of IPF-Ss that occurred in Turkiye between 2000 and 2019. IPF-Ss (n = 226) were extracted from electronic news stories. Data on victims, perpetrators, their relationships, and incidents of murder and suicide were collected. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and logistic regression analysis, mortality rates, and proportion of IPF-S in femicide calculations were conducted, showing that 13.3% of the femicides (n = 1699) were IPF-Ss. The IPF-Ss increased in 5-year intervals and were the highest during the 2015-2019 period (62.5%). Victims were married in 48.2% of the cases and 56% were aged <35 years, while 51.3% of the perpetrators were married and 52.6% were aged >40 years. In 42.0% of the cases, the perpetrator lived with the victim. Most (79.2%) of the cases took place in urban settlements, and the perpetrators used firearms in 84.1% of femicide cases. Firearm use was the most common method in cases where IPF-S was planned (OR = 2.98), when the IPF-S method was the same (OR = 29.6), and when the perpetrator committed suicide (OR = 7.82). In addition, it was found that firearm ownership is an important risk factor for IPF-S in Turkiye. Therefore, we recommend legislation to restrict firearms, as well as new measures to prevent illegal access to weapons.
