A New Conducting Polymer Bearing 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (bodipy) Subunit: Synthesis and Characterization
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2008) Cihaner, Atilla; Algi, Fatih
A new monomer system based on thiophene, pyrrole and 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene dye (SNS-BODIPY) was synthesized and its corresponding polymer (PSNS-BODIPY) was obtained via repetitive cycling or constant potential electrolysis in 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate dissolved in dichloromethane. The PSNS-BODIPY film has very stable and well-defined reversible redox couples during p-doping process. Multi-electrochromic polymer film has a band gap of 2.9 eV with two absorption bands in its neutral state at 351 and 525 nm, attributed to the polymer backbone and BODIPY subunits, respectively. The percentage transmittance changes between both states (neutral and oxidized) were found as 12.1% for 351 nm and 17.7% for 525 nm in the visible region as well as 46.2% for 1050 nm in the near-infrared region. Beyond the robustness, the PSNS-BODIPY film has high redox stability (retaining 53.3% of its electroactivity at 351 nm after 2000 switching) with a low response time of 1.0 s. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Improvement of Optical Properties and Redox Stability of Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene)
(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2018) Ertan, Salih; Cihaner, Atilla
In order to improve the optical properties and redox stability of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) without changing its electrochemical and electrochromic behaviour, it was supported with alkyl-substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cage. The corresponding copolymers were obtained electrochemically via potentiostatic or potentiodynamic methods and compared to the parent homopolymers. Electrochemical polymerization of EDOT and POSS containing EDOT called EDOT-POSS in various monomer feed ratios was performed in an electrolyte solution of 0.1 M TBAPF(6) dissolved in a mixture of dichloromethane and acetonitrile (1/3: v/v). Just as PEDOT, the copolymers represented the similar band gap (1.61 eV), redox and electrochromic behaviors. On the other hand, when compared to the parent PEDOT, the presence of POSS cages in the copolymer backbone improved the redox stability and optical properties of PEDOT such as higher percent transmittance change (65% at 621 nm), higher transparency at oxidized state, lower switching time (similar to 1.0 s) and higher coloration efficiency (463 cm(2)/C for 95% switching) as well as higher electrochemical stability (86% of its electroactivity retains after 1750 cycles under ambient conditions).

Electropolymerization and Ion Sensitivity of Chemiluminescent Thienyl Systems
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2009) Asil, Demet; Cihaner, Atilla; Onal, Ahmet M.
Redox driven chemiluminescent (CL) compounds based on thienyl and pyridazine systems, namely 2,3-dihydrothieno(3,4-d)pyridazine-1,4-dione (T-Lum) and 5,7-di-thiophen-2-yl-2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-d]pyridazine-1,4-dione (TTT-Lum), were synthesized. Soluble compounds both in organic media and basic aqueous solution were found to give CL and electroluminescent (EL) reactions by the treatment of oxidants (H2O2 and KMnO4) and by an external potential pulse on the working electrode, respectively. Furthermore, the CL reaction can be speeded up by Fe3+ ion or blood samples. On the other hand, one of the compounds. TTT-Lum, can be polymerized successfully via electrochemically both in 0.1 M LiClO4/acetonitrile containing 5% of borontrifluoro diethylether (BF3-Et2O) and neat BF3-Et2O solution. The corresponding polymer film (PTTT-Lum) bearing CL units has a very stable and a well-defined reversible redox couple. Also, the electrochromic polymer film has a band gap of 1.74 eV and exhibits EL behavior. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Electrochemical and Optical Properties of Substituted Phthalimide Based Monomers and Electrochemical Polymerization of 3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (poss) Analogue
(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2019) Cakal, Deniz; Ertan, Salih; Cihaner, Atilla; Onal, Ahmet M.
A new series of donor-acceptor-donor type trimeric monomers bearing substituted phthalimide units as acceptor units and thiophene and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) as donor units was synthesized and characterized. The strength of acceptor units and intramolecular charge transfer between donor and acceptor units were investigated by using electrochemical and optical methods. The main advantage of phthalimide unit over other acceptor units is the ease of its functionalizability. Thus, utilizing this property, a phthalimide derivative (E2P-POSS) bearing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cage was introduced successfully with EDOT and polymerized electrochemically. The corresponding electroactive polymer, PE2P-POSS, has a band gap of 1.72 eV and is an electrochromic polymer: gray when neutralized and eggplant purple when oxidized.

An Ambipolar Low Band Gap Material Based on Bodipy and Edot
(Elsevier Science Bv, 2009) Algi, Fatih; Cihaner, Atilla
A novel donor-acceptor type conducting polymer based on BODIPY dye as acceptor and EDOT units as donor parts is synthesized electrochemically. The unique combination of BODIPY and EDOT units provides an ambipolar (n- and p-doping processes) low band gap material (4). This is the first example of p-n junction in an organic pi-conjugated material where BODIPY unit is incorporated directly in the main chain. Furthermore, the polymer film exhibits electrochromic behavior upon p-doping: a color change from light violet (neutral) to indigo (oxidized). (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Low Band Gap Polymer Based on Selenophene and Benzobis (thiadiazole)
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2017) Abdulrazzaq, Mohammed; Ozkut, Merve Icli; Gokce, Gurcan; Ertan, Salih; Tutuncu, Esra; Cihaner, Atilla
A new derivative of benzobis(thiadiazole) based donor-acceptor-donor type monomers, namely 4,7-di (selenophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-c;4,5-c']bis[1,2,5]thiadiazole (SeBTSe), was synthesized and its polymerization was carried out successfully via electrochemical polymerization in an electrolyte solution of 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate dissolved in dichloromethane. The monomer SeBTSe is a deep red chromophore and it has four redox states: one oxidation, one neutral and two reduction states. The electrochemical behaviour of the corresponding polymer called PSeBTSe was studied by cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry. There is a good agreement between electrochemical (0.62-0.66 eV) and optical (0.63 eV) bandgaps of the polymer. Like the monomer, the ambipolar polymer has four redox states and electrochromic properties: gray beige at neutral state, smoky azurite at oxidized state, beige at first reduced state and dark beige at second reduced state. A Novel Electrochromic and Fluorescent Polythienylpyrrole Bearing 1,1′-Bipyrrole
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2009) Cihaner, Atilla; Mert, Olcay; Demir, Ayhan S.
A novel conducting polymer was successfully synthesized via electropolymerization of 1-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole. The electrochemical and electro-optical properties of the corresponding polymer, which was the first example of polymer containing 1,1'-bipyrrole units, were elaborated using electroanalytical and spectroscopic techniques. Cyclic voltammograms and electro-optical studies showed that the polymer has a stable and well-defined reversible redox process as well as electrochromic behavior. The processable polymer film also possessed a yellowish orange light emitter property. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Electrochemical and Optical Characterization of a Multielectrochromic Copolymer Based on 3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene and Functionalized Dithienylpyrrole Derivative
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2019) Tutuncu, Esra; Ozkut, Merve Icli; Balci, Burcu; Berk, Hasan; Cihaner, Atilla
A novel conjugated copolymer, namely poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-co-1-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole) (P(EDOT-co-1)) was synthesized via electropolymerization method from a mixture of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene and 1-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole comonomers. The corresponding copolymer has an optical band gap of 1.7 eV and 41% optical contrast at 525 nm with a coloration efficiency of 258 cm(2)/C and 1.4 s switching time. The copolymer has a multi-electrochromic behavior: It has dark purple, purple, gray, green and cyan colors at different oxidation states. Electrochemical stability of P(EDOT-co-1) copolymer was also investigated and it was observed that the copolymer retained 86% of its stability under ambient conditions in the presence of oxygen (without purging the electrolyte solution with any inert gas) according to the current density and 83% according to the deposited charge even after 1000 redox cycles.

A New Carborane Based Polymeric Electrochrome
(Elsevier Science Sa, 2013) Cansu-Ergun, Emine Gul; Cihaner, Atilla
New electrochromic copolymers of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene and di(m-carboranyl thiophene) were synthesized, characterized and their electro-optical properties were reported. The copolymers were successfully prepared from various monomer feed ratios using electrochemical polymerization technique. It can be conjectured that electrochemical and optical properties of the copolymers can be adjusted by playing with monomer feed ratios. For example, the maximum wavelength of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) at 600 nm can be shifted to lower values (i.e., 522 nm) by increasing the ratio of di(m-carboranyl thiophene) in the monomer mixture. The copolymer films also have low band gap values between 1.69 and 1.82 eV and showed electrochromic properties; purple when neutralized and transparent sky blue when oxidized. Also, during redox switching the films exhibited a percent transmittance change between 32% and 46% with a switching time between 1.0 s and 1.3 s. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
