    Simulation-Based Environments for Surgical Practice

    Modeling and simulation environments provide several insights about the real situations such as endoscopic surgery. Endoscopic surgery requires both hand skills, so, understanding the effect of using dominant or non dominant hand on mental workload is important to better design, develop and implement modeling and simulation environments to support real-life implementations of surgical procedures. This experimental study presents a simulation application of eye-tracking approach to understand mental workload in different hand conditions: dominant hand, non-dominant hand and both hand. The results of the study show that, performing simulated surgical tasks by both hands compared to dominant hand, increases mental workload which is evident by higher pupil size. Accordingly, to manage the mental-load problems of surgeons while performing complex tasks that require both hand usage simulation-based environments can be used. Consequently, collection of detailed information such as eye-data, can give several insights about the behaviors of the surgeons. Also, their required skills can be improved by development of simulation and training environments.

    A Fast Hough Transform Approximation and Its Application for Barcode Localization

    This paper addresses barcode localization in images acquired by wireles cameras. For this purpose, a fast Hough transform approximation by use of a sliding mask is developed. The approximation decomposes the lines at different orientations into distinct bitplanes. Barcode localization is achieved by considering the high density locations in the bitplanes via morphology and profiling. The time complexity of the proposed approximation is lower than the previously proposed fast Hough transform, though it achieves the equal performance in localization of barcodes.

    Magnetically Geared Direct Drive Wind Generator Thermal Analysis

    This paper considers Dual Stator Spoke Array Vernier Permanent Magnet (DSSA-VPM) generator for the direct drive wind-electric energy conversion. The structure of the generator is described. Although how this design is optimized is not discussed, dimensions of the designed generator are given. In electrical machine design thermal performance is naturally of utmost importance. In this paper thermal performance of the design and how its temperature can be kept within the temperature limit imposed by its insulation class and the permanent magnets used is investigated. It is found that when air flow within the generator is not permitted, at rated load condition the generator temperature reaches very high levels. To lower the operating temperature, ventilation holes are introduced to the end plates of the frame. Also some blades are placed on the rotor to help flow of air over the end windings. A model is introduced to calculate the air speed in the region where air flows. Using the calculated air speed a new heat transfer coefficient is determined for the region where air flows. It is found out that with the mentioned modifications to the structure of the generator the designed generator temperature rise can be kept within the value permitted for its insulation class. Therefore, the power density of the design can be safely compared with the power density of other types of designs for direct drive turbines. It is found that DSSA-VPM generator topology offers a clear advantage over other types of generators considered in the literature.

    The Usability Study for the Personal Health Record Systems

    With the emergence of new technologies, there is an increasing number of studies to improve healthcare delivery quality and health services. The studies have shown that the focus should be on integrated, sharable and personalized healthcare solutions which requires usage of patient data as much as possible for fast and correct diagnosis and care. Hence, data related to people when they are healthy and when they are sick become very critical for which many projects have been initiated to increase awareness of people about the importance of data collection all over the world and in our country as well. This requires more active role of the citizens in tracking their healthcare data. In this study, Microsoft Health Vault system that is used for storage of personal health records, has been analyzed in terms of its usability characteristics and the results have been discussed.

    Design, Analysis and Manufacturing of Dielectric Rod Added Conical Rom Antennas

    In this study, ANSYS HFSS (High Frequency Structural Simulator) software had been used. By using this software, dielectric rod added conical horn antennas with various shapes and dimensions had been designed and analyzed. 5 (five) distinct antennas designed and their gains and return losses had been observed to evaluate the effects of the changes. From the results of these comparisons, the proper antenna type was selected and it was manufactured.

    Towards Modeling Patterns for Embedded Software Industry: Feedback From the Field

    The analysis, design, implementation and testing of software for embedded systems are not trivial. Software modeling is a commonly used approach in the embedded software industry to manage complexity of these phases. The modeling approaches vary since the characteristics of modeling such as its purpose, the medium type used, the lifecycle phase used, differ among systems and industrial sectors. Our previous research identified and defined the modeling approach patterns in embedded software development projects based on quantitative data. In this paper, to validate and improve the pre-investigated pattern set, we present a series of semi-structured interviews over eight months with 53 embedded software professionals across a variety of target industrial sectors and roles. With the help of these interviews, the different modeling approach patterns in embedded software development were better understood and the hidden patterns not evident in the previous study were identified along with a documentation of personalized modeling experiences.

    An Rfid Based Location Finding and Tracking With Guidance

    This paper tackles an RFID based location finding and tracking system. The system is an integral part of a navigation aid being developed for guiding visually disabled people in a store. The aid is composed of a portable hardware interface unit, a standalone RFID unit, and a central processing unit. The units interact via wireless communication to locate the position of the user in a known indoor environment and tracking his/her movement. An active RFID tag helps to estimate the location of a user and the user is guided to follow a route accordingly, via a tactile compass. The system uses RF signal strengths and is based on Bayes Decision Theory. Initial simulation results with the system prove promising for location finding and tracking, especially when the tracked person is guided by a system.

    Optimization of modeling parameters of of a direct dimethyl ether fuel cell (DDMEFC)

    Direct alcohol fuel cells are one of the suitable candidates for sustainable power generation in portable applications. Among the different alcohol types that can be used in these fuel cells, DME, which is almost non-toxic at room temperature and easy to liquefy, and has a molecular structure similar to methanol, is one of the suitable options. For this reason, many studies have been carried out to develop direct dimethyl ether fuel cell (DDMEFC). Mathematical modeling studies also play an important role in the development of DDMEFC since they enable the understanding of the performance of the fuel cells more thoroughly. In this study, a model has been developed by using the principles of conservation chemical species and electrochemistry. A modeling study was performed using MATLAB. The values of some modeling parameters were estimated using the genetic algorithm optimization technique.

    An Investigation About Process Matchmaking Performances of Unstructured and Decentralized Digital Environments

    Efficient matchmaking is an important problem in unstructured and decentralized digital environments. We report the results of simulations of these environments and provide measurements of match performance focusing on unstructured and decentralized environments. In the study, different environment models including P2P (Hypergrid, Gnutella with/without ultrapeer); small-world (Watts-Strogatz); heavy-tailed and random versions of Autonomous System Waxman model showing power-law distribution property; random and 2D-Grid are considered. The flooding mechanism enabling process encounters for match purposes is uninformed Breadth-First-Search. Simulations show that the matchmaking performance of random environment outperforms the others for almost all different problems and time-to-live settings. On the other hand, the total cost of small world environment model is the highest for almost all setups.
