Kazemzadeh; Hasancebi, O.The guided stochastic search (GSS) is a computationally efficient design optimization technique, which is originally developed for discrete sizing optimization problems of steel trusses with a single displacement constraint under a single load case. The present study aims to investigate the GSS in a more general class of truss sizing optimization problems subject to multiple displacement constraints and load cases. To this end, enhancements of the GSS are proposed in the form of two alternative approaches that enable the technique to deal with multiple displacement/load cases. The first approach implements a methodology in which the most critical displacement direction is considered only when guiding the search process. The second approach, however, takes into account the cumulative effect of all the critical displacement directions in the course of optimization. Advantage of the integrated force method of structural analysis is also utilized for further reduction of the computational effort in these approaches. The proposed enhancements of GSS are investigated and compared with some selected techniques of design optimization through six truss structures that are sized for minimum weight. The numerical results reveal that both enhancements generally provide promising solutions with an insignificant computational effort.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Structural Design Optimization of Multi-Layer Spherical Pressure Vessels: a Metaheuristic Approach(Springer, 2019) Akis, Tolga; Azad, Saeid KazemzadehThis study addresses the optimum design problem of multi-layer spherical pressure vessels based on von Mises yield criterion. In order to compute the structural responses under internal pressure, analytical solutions for one-, two-, and three-layer spherical pressure vessels are provided. A population-based metaheuristic algorithm is reformulated for optimum material selection as well as thickness optimization of multi-layer spherical pressure vessels. Furthermore, in order to enhance the computational efficiency of the optimization algorithm, upper bound strategy is also integrated with the algorithm for reducing the total number of structural response evaluations during the optimization iterations. The performance of the algorithm is investigated through weight and cost minimization of one-, two- and three-layer spherical pressure vessels and the results are presented in detail. The obtained numerical results, based on different internal pressures as well as vessel sizes, indicate the usefulness and efficiency of the employed methodology in optimum design of multi-layer spherical pressure vessels.Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 14Fuzzy Logic Model To Estimate Seasonal Pseudo Steady State Chlorophyll-A Concentrations in Reservoirs(Springer, 2004) Soyupak, S; Chen, DGA fuzzy logic model is developed to estimate pseudo steady state chlorophyll-a concentrations in a very large and deep dam reservoir, namely Keban Dam Reservoir, which is also highly spatial and temporal variable. The estimation power of the developed fuzzy logic model was tested by comparing its performance with that from the classical multiple regression model. The data include chlorophyll-a concentrations in Keban lake as a response variable, as well as several water quality variables such as PO4 phosphorus, NO3 nitrogen, alkalinity, suspended solids concentration, pH, water temperature, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen concentration and Secchi depth as independent environmental variables. Because of the complex nature of the studied water body, as well as non-significant functional relationships among the water quality variables to the chlorophyll-a concentration, an initial analysis is conducted to select the most important variables that can be used in estimating the chlorophyll-a concentrations within the studied water body. F.; Gasanly, N. M.The sample thickness effect on the optical properties of TlInS2 layered crystals has been investigated at room temperature. The absorption coefficient of the samples calculated from the experimental transmittance and reflectance in the photon energy range of 1.10-3.10 eV has two absorption regions. The first is a long-wavelength region of 1.16-1.28 eV. The second region lies above 2.21 eV with a thickness-dependent indirect band gap. The energy gap decreases from 2.333 to 2.255 eV as the sample thickness increases from 27 to 66 mu m. The differential spectra of absorption coefficient demonstrates the existence of a thickness-dependent impurity level being lowered from 2.360 to 2.307 eV as sample thickness increases from 27 to 66 mu m. N.; Qasrawi, A. F.In this work, the design and optical and electrical properties of MgO/GaSe heterojunction devices are reported and discussed. The device was designed using 0.4-mu m-thick n-type GaSe as substrate for a 1.6-mu m-thick p-type MgO optoelectronic window. The device was characterized by means of ultraviolet-visible optical spectrophotometry in the wavelength region from 200 nm to 1100 nm, current-voltage (I-V) characteristics, impedance spectroscopy in the range from 1.0 MHz to 1.8 GHz, and microwave amplitude spectroscopy in the frequency range from 1.0 MHz to 3.0 GHz. Optical analysis of the MgO/GaSe heterojunction revealed enhanced absorbing ability of the GaSe below 2.90 eV with an energy bandgap shift from 2.10 eV for the GaSe substrate to 1.90 eV for the heterojunction design. On the other hand, analysis of I-V characteristics revealed a tunneling-type device conducting current by electric field-assisted tunneling of charged particles through a barrier with height of 0.81 eV and depletion region width of 670 nm and 116 nm when forward and reverse biased, respectively. Very interesting features of the device are observed when subjected to alternating current (ac) signal analysis. In particular, the device exhibited resonance-antiresonance behavior and negative capacitance characteristics near 1.0 GHz. The device quality factor was similar to 10(2). In addition, when a small ac signal of Bluetooth amplitude (0.0 dBm) was imposed between the device terminals, the power spectra of the device displayed tunable band-stop filter characteristics with maximum notch frequency of 1.6 GHz. The energy bandgap discontinuity, the resonance-antiresonance behavior, the negative capacitance features, and the tunability of the electromagnetic power spectra at microwave frequencies nominate the Ag/MgO/GaSe/Al device as a promising optoelectronic device for use in multipurpose operations at microwave frequencies.Article Citation - WoS: 58Citation - Scopus: 74Internet Addiction Among College Students: Some Causes and Effects(Springer, 2019) Baturay, Meltem Huri; Toker, SacipInternet addiction among college students in terms of causes and effects are investigated. Correlation study method is utilized; structural equation modelling is applied to analyze the data. There are fifteen hypotheses generated for the model. The data is collected via numerous instruments proven as reliable and valid by the previous studies. There are 159 undergraduate students as participants of the study. Antecedent variables are game addiction, bad relationships with friends, family and professors, neglecting daily chores, hindrance of sleep pattern, use internet for researching, weekly internet use hours, leisure time activities, reading and playing computer games. Consequence variables are self-esteem, self-confidence, social self-efficacy, loneliness, and academic self-efficacy. The results indicates that game addiction, neglecting daily chores, bad relationships with professors are significantly associated with internet addiction. Internet addiction decreases one's self-esteem, self-confidence, social self-efficacy, academic self-efficacy and triggers loneliness. Parents, professors and educational institutions may be illuminated about prevention or monitoring of internet addiction. The current study investigates Internet addiction with respect to its implications for social behavioral, and psychological phenomenon but not in a clinical sense. Hence, studies on Internet addiction merely concentrate on antecedents and features that may cause more addiction; however, both antecedents and consequences are not examined. The value of the current study is to provide more systematic, comprehensive, and theory-based empirical causations via structural equation models. The results of this paper suggest that potential entrants observe the market before the entry takes place; entry is, in general, a follow-up process; and incumbent firms seem to collude to prevent entry in Turkish manufacturing industries. In this paper, it is shown that this generalized distribution can be represented as a discrete phase-type distribution. Using this representation along with closure properties of phase-type distributions, the distributions of sum, minima and maxima of two independent random variables having geometric distribution of order are obtained. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the computational details.
