    Robust stability of 2-D digital filters employing saturation

    A computationally tractable, i.e., linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based criterion for the global asymptotic stability of uncertain two-dimensional digital filters described by the Fornasini-Marchesini second local state-space model with saturation overflow arithmetic is presented. The criterion is compared with an earlier LMI-based criterion.

    An Intelligent Process Planning System for Prismatic Parts Using Step Features

    This paper presents an intelligent process planning system using STEP features (ST-FeatCAPP) for prismatic parts. The system maps a STEP AP224 XML data file, without using a complex feature recognition process, and produces the corresponding machining operations to generate the process plan and corresponding STEP-NC in XML format. It carries out several stages of process planning such as operations selection, tool selection, machining parameters determination, machine tools selection and setup planning. A hybrid approach of most recent techniques ( neural networks, fuzzy logic and rule-based) of artificial intelligence is used as the inference engine of the developed system. An object-oriented approach is used in the definition and implementation of the system. An example part is tested and the corresponding process plan is presented to demonstrate and verify the proposed CAPP system. The paper thus suggests a new feature-based intelligent CAPP system for avoiding complex feature recognition and knowledge acquisition problems.

    Synthesis and Characterization of Mg2b2<

    Magnesium borate of the form Mg2B2O5 has been prepared and its structural and thermal properties were studied using X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis. An investigation of the electrical and optical properties of Mg2B2O5 system has been carried out. The electrical resistivity of the sample was measured in the temperature range of 170-400 K. The data analysis revealed an extrinsic nature of the conductivity with two impurity levels located at 0.13 and 0.71 eV in the temperature ranges of 170-230 K and 240-400 K, respectively. The optical transmission and reflection was recorded at 300 K in the incident photon energy range of 3.0-6.0 eV. The absorption coefficient data analysis revealed an indirect optical energy band gap of 4.73 eV. In addition, two impurity levels located at 3.43, and 4.49 eV were observed in the absorption spectra. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Effect of People Moving Near Short-Range Indoor Propagation Links at 2.45 Ghz

    Measurement results are presented for the effects of people moving near and across short-range indoor propagation links at 2.45 GHz (ISM band). Excess loss due to scattering and blockage by human bodies in the vicinity of one terminal were measured for different radio links in an office environment. Statistics on fades due to human body motion are given. Polarization coupling (depolarization) for various radio links was measured, and correlation of polarization components is discussed as a basis for using polarization diversity reception in short-range indoor systems.

    Elimination of Limit Cycles in a Class of Digital Filters Using Single Saturation Nonlinearity

    Using Lyapunov's direct method, a novel frequency-domain criterion for the elimination of limit cycles in a class of digital filters using single saturation nonlinearity is derived. The criterion turns out to be a generalization and improvement over an earlier criterion due to Kar and Singh. An example showing the effectiveness of the criterion is given. A graphical interpretation of a simplified version (involving one free parameter) of the criterion is discussed.

    Structural, Electrical and Anisotropic Properties of Tl4se3< Chain Crystals

    The structure, the anisotropy effect on the current transport mechanism and the space charge limited current in Tl4Se3S chain crystals have been studied by means of X-ray diffraction, electrical conductivity measurements along and perpendicular to the crystal's c-axis and the current voltage characteristics. The temperature-dependent electrical conductivity analysis in the region of 150-400 K, revealed the domination of the thermionic emission of charge carriers over the chain boundaries above 210 and 270 K along and perpendicular to the c-axis, respectively. Below these temperatures, the variable range hopping is dominant. At a consistent temperature range, the thermionic emission analysis results in conductivity activation energies of 280 and 182 meV, along and perpendicular to the c-axis, respectively. Likewise, the hopping parameters are altered significantly by the conductivity anisotropy. The current-voltage characteristics revealed the existence of hole trapping state being located at 350 meV above the valence band of the crystal. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    The Stress Response of Partially Plastic Rotating Fgm Hollow Shafts: Analytical Treatment for Axially Constrained Ends

    analytical solutions to estimating the elastoplastic response of rotating functionally graded (FGM) hollow shafts with fixed ends are presented. The modulus of elasticity, as well as the uniaxial yield limit of the shaft material, are assumed to vary nonlinearly in the radial direction. The plastic model is based on Tresca's yield criterion, its associated flow rule, and ideal plastic material behaviour. Elastic, partially plastic, fully plastic, and residual stress states are investigated. It is shown that the elastoplastic stress response of a rotating FGM hollow shaft is affected significantly by the nonhomogeneity of the material. Unlike the case of a homogeneous hollow shaft, plastic deformation may commence at the inner surface, at the outer surface, or simultaneously at both surfaces. Accordingly, each case requires different mathematical treatment to arrive at its partially plastic solution. It is also shown that, by taking a numerical limit, the complete FGM solution presented herein converge to the solution of a homogeneous rotating shaft.

    Template-free microsphere and hollow sphere formation of polymethylanilines

    BACKGROUND: Microsphere and/or hollow sphere formation of methyl-substituted polyaniline derivatives was investigated via chemical polymerization where different sets of conditions were examined. It was found that a variety of parameters (e.g. types and concentrations of monomer and oxidant, polymerization time, solvent with and without acid) have a crucial influence on the morphology of the resulting polyaniline derivatives. RESULTS: Structures with desired morphologies (with or without microspheres and hollow spheres) may be obtained in a controlled manner by changing the parameters. Moreover, the electrochemical and optical properties of the polymers in the presence of acid and/or base were investigated via cyclic voltammetry and UV-visible and electron spin resonance spectroscopic techniques. It is noteworthy that the morphologies of microspheres and/or hollow spheres remained unchanged after repeated acid and base treatments. CONCLUSION: Micro/hollow spherical structures were successfully prepared via chemical polymerization of various substituted anilines by using ammonium persulfate as oxidant. It was found that the type of oxidant and monomers along with the polymerization time are quite important factors for the formation of micro/hollow spheres. Furthermore, hydrogen bond formation does not play any crucial role for the formation of these spheres. Chemically and electrochemically doped/dedoped states of microspheres and/or hollow spheres are very sensitive, and give rapid response towards vapours of HCl and NH3, which makes them amenable for use in sensors.     Doubly Warped Products

    In this paper we study geodesic completeness of Riemannian doubly warped products and Lorentzian doubly warped products. We give necessary conditions for generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes with doubly warped product spacial parts to be globally hyperbolic. We also state some results about killing and conformal vector fields of doubly warped products.
