Article Citation - WoS: 17Citation - Scopus: 24The New Middle Class in Emerging Markets: How Values and Demographics Influence Discretionary Consumption(Wiley, 2019) Belbag, Aybegum G.; Uner, M. Mithat; Cavusgil, Erin; Cavusgi, S. TamerThe rise of new middle-class consumers in rapidly transforming emerging markets has attracted the attention of Western business executives. What they know about this growing segment of customers will determine whether they succeed or fail in these markets. The present study examines the factors that drive the discretionary consumption of this new middle class, including the effects of consumerist values, religious values, occupation, education levels, and ownership of fixed assets. The study draws its insights from data gathered from 391 new middle-class consumers in Ankara, the second-largest city in Turkey. The findings provide important implications for businesses, both indigenous and foreign. An overall implication is that managers ought to understand and qualify the new middle class in emerging markets not simply by their access to disposable income but by deeper attitudinal and behavioral characteristics. Article Implementation of Turkish Text-To Synthesis on a Voice Synthesizer Card With Prosodic Features(2017) Tora, Hakan; Uslu, İbrahim Baran; Karamehmet, TimurThis study is on hardware implementation of the Turkish text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis with a voice synthesizer card. Here, a fully functional TTS system, capable of synthesizing every Turkish text, including abbreviations, numbers, etc. is designed and implemented. The system is additionally enriched by applying some prosodic attributes for more intelligible and natural speech production. A set of rules required for proper pronunciation and stress patterns are precisely defined in a lexicon utilized for synthesizing Turkish speech. Performance of the developed system is assessed by the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) test. An average score of 3.29 out of 5 is achieved. It indicates that the proposed synthesizer can be successfully integrated to many practical Turkish TTS applications.Article Mesâi-i Lisâniye ve Cenab Şahabeddin(2023) Nurdan, Gülçin TuğbaThis study considers the article titled \"Mesâi-i Lisâniye\" written by Cenab Şahabeddin in the first issue of Darülfünun Literature Magazine, which was started to be published in March 1916 under Istanbul Darülfünun control. The original of the text is three and a half pages. It is included in the appendices of the study. Within the framework of this article, language issues of Cenab Şahabeddin and the period were emphasized. When we look at the Servet-i Period, it is quite remarkable that the language has a lot of foreign words due to the lack of lexicon. In this article, Cenab Şahabeddin focuses on how essential it is to establish a language institution. For this, Cenab Şahabeddin, who recommends the establishment of language committees and working in a systematic way, also emphasizes that these language issues should be based on education. As a result, Cenab Şahabeddin underlines the importance of the language issue and points that this issue should be dealt with great care in every aspect. In his article, he made various suggestions to achive this. In this context, it is possible to evaluate this attitude of Cenab Şahabeddin as quite prograssive for his period.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Spline Based Sparseness and Smoothness for Partially Nonlinear Model Via C-Fused Lasso(American Institute of Mathematical Sciences, 2025) Taylan, P.; Yerlikaya-¨Ozkurt, F.; Tez, M.One of the most beneficial and widely used models for data analysis are partially nonlinear models (PNLRM), which consists of parametric and nonparametric components. Since the model includes the coefficients of both the parametric and nonparametric parts, the complexity of the model will be high and its interpretation will be very difficult. In this study, we propose a procedure that not only achieves sparseness, but also smoothness for PNLRM to obtain a simpler model that better explains the relationship between the response and covariates. Thus, the fused Lasso problem is taken into account where nonparametric components are expressed as a spline basis function, and then the Fused Lasso estimation problem is built and expressed in terms of conic quadratic programming. Applications are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed method by considering commonly utilized measures. Promising results are obtained, especially in the data with nonlinearly correlated variables. © (2025), (American Institute of Mathematical Sciences). According to the model, the system fails when the time between two consecutive shocks is less than a prespecified level. This is the discrete time version of the so-called delta-shock model which has been previously studied for the continuous case. We obtain the probability mass function and probability generating function of the system's lifetime. We also present an extension of the results to the case where the shock occurrences are dependent in a Markovian fashion. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The main advantage of this technique is that the bulk properties of the material remain unchanged while the surface properties and biocompatibility are enhanced. Polymers are used in many biomedical applications; such as implants, because of their variable bulk properties. On the other hand, their surface properties are inadequate which demands certain surface treatments including atmospheric pressure plasma treatment. In biomedical applications, surface treatment is important to promote good cell adhesion, proliferation, and growth. This article aim is to give an overview of different atmospheric pressure plasma treatments of polymer surface, and their influence on cell-material interaction with different cell lines.Data Paper Citation - WoS: 44Citation - Scopus: 64A Database for the Radio Frequency Fingerprinting of Bluetooth Devices(Mdpi, 2020) Uzundurukan, Emre; Dalveren, Yaser; Kara, AliRadio frequency fingerprinting (RFF) is a promising physical layer protection technique which can be used to defend wireless networks from malicious attacks. It is based on the use of the distinctive features of the physical waveforms (signals) transmitted from wireless devices in order to classify authorized users. The most important requirement to develop an RFF method is the existence of a precise, robust, and extensive database of the emitted signals. In this context, this paper introduces a database consisting of Bluetooth (BT) signals collected at different sampling rates from 27 different smartphones (six manufacturers with several models for each). Firstly, the data acquisition system to create the database is described in detail. Then, the two well-known methods based on transient BT signals are experimentally tested by using the provided data to check their solidity. The results show that the created database may be useful for many researchers working on the development of the RFF of BT devices.
