Electrospinning is a sophisticated technique for the preparation of polymeric nanofibers impregnated with drugs for wound healing, burns, and diabetic ulcers. This study describes the fabrication and characterization of a novel drug-eluting dressing made of core-shell structured hyaluronic acid (HA)-keratin (KR)-polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers to treat diabetic wounds. The core-shell nanofibers produced by the emulsion electrospinning technique provide loading of metformin hydrochloride (MH), HA, and KR in the core of nanofibers, which in return improves the sustained long term release of the drug and prolongs the bioactivity. Morphological and chemical properties of the fibers were examined by SEM, FTIR, and XRD studies. It was observed that the fibers which contain HA and KR showed thin fiber structure, greater swelling capacity, fast degradation and increased cumulative drug release amount than neat emulsion fibers due to the hydrophilic nature of HA and KR. MH showed a sustained release from all fiber samples over 20 days and followed the first-order and Higuchi model kinetics and Fickian diffusion mechanism according to kinetic analysis results. In vitro cell culture studies showed that the developed mats exhibited enhanced biocompatibility performance with HA and KR incorporation. The results show that HA and KR-based emulsion electrospun fiber mats are potentially useful new nanofiber-based biomaterials in their use as drug carriers to treat diabetic wounds.Article Importance of Alkaline Phosphatase as a Predictor of Transient Hypoparathyroidism After Parathyroidectomy(Springernature, 2025) Gulen, Merter; Emral, Ahmet Cihangir; Sariyildiz, Gulcin TurkmenBackgroundThere are insufficient studies that have investigated the relationship between temporary hypoparathyroidism (hypoPTH) and the preoperative serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level in patients with no renal function disorder who have undergone isolated parathyroidectomy. The aim of this study was to determine whether or not the preoperative serum ALP level could be a marker which could predict the development of postoperative temporary hypoPTH. MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 158 patients aged > 18 years who were diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) between 2017 and 2022. The demographic data of the patients were retrieved from the hospital records. The patients were separated into two groups according to the serum calcium level after the parathyroidectomy, as the normal group and the temporary hypoPTH group. The determinants of temporary hypoPTH developing after parathyroidectomy in PHPT patients were investigated using multivariate logistic regression analysis. ResultsTemporary hypoPTH was determined in 25.3% of patients. The mean age and 25-O-HD level were determined to be lower in the patients who developed temporary hypoPTH compared to those who did not. The preoperative serum ALP, parathormone, and 24-h urine calcium levels were determined to be higher in the cases that developed temporary hypoPTH. As a result of the regression analysis, only the serum ALP level was determined to be an independent risk factor predicting the development of temporary hypoPTH (p: 0.005, OR: 1.021). In the ROC analysis, when a cutoff value of 119.5 pg/mL was taken for ALP, it was determined to have 73% sensitivity and 72% specificity for the prediction of the development of temporary hypoPTH. ConclusionsThe most appropriate treatment for symptomatic PHPT patients selected with positive imaging is minimally invasive parathyroidectomy. The most important postoperative complications are hypocalcemia and hypoPTH. The preoperative serum ALP level may be helpful in determining patients at risk of developing temporary hypoPTH following parathyroidectomy.Article Usability Assessment of Scholarly Publishers' Online Journal Interfaces(Springernature, 2023) Peker, Serhat; Dalveren, Gonca Gokce MenekseA well-designed and user-friendly online journal interface not only enhances researchers' satisfaction but also bolsters the reputation of academic publishers within the scholarly community. This investigation encompasses a combination of user testing and post-questionnaire methodologies, aiming to accrue both quantitative and qualitative data concerning user task execution and satisfaction. The research findings spotlight the varying degrees of usability across major academic publishers and emphasize the critical role of design in enhancing researchers' experiences. It seeks to identify future direction for studies related to long-term clinical outcomes regarding ALL's role in rotational stability, especially in the context of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.MethodsA bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Web of Science (WoS) database, covering publications from 2012 to 2024 with the search term "anterolateral ligament". A total of 942 studies were identified. Descriptive statistics summarized publication trends, authorship, institutional contributions, and citation metrics. VOSviewer software was used to analyze co-authorship network analysis, keyword co-occurrence mapping, and total citation analysis. Yearly publication and citation trends were analyzed using WoS data. Studies addressing the ALL in other body regions were excluded. Additionally, only authors with at least one publication and one citation were considered, and documents with more than 25 authors were excluded. A total citation analysis was conducted, and 24 relevant keywords with more than 5 occurrences were identified using VOSviewer.ResultsAmong 942 publications, 707 were original articles. Research output peaked in 2017 (125 articles). Sonnery-Cottet was the leading author (75 publications), while Universidade De S & atilde;o-Paulo emerged as the top institution (57 publications). Key journals included Arthroscopy: Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery (143 articles) and The American Journal of Sports Medicine (131 articles). Keywords such as "anterior cruciate ligament", "reconstruction", and "rotational stability" dominated, reflecting a focus on ACL injury management. The top ten cited studies accrued 3,86 citations, with Claes et al.'s anatomical study leading (621 citations). Of the 942 ALL-related articles in WoS, 381 focused on anatomy (11,278 citations) while 814 addressed reconstruction (17,048 citations). Keyword trends shifted from anatomical to clinical terms, with anatomy declining and stability, injury, and outcomes gaining prominence from 2021 to 2024.ConclusionsThis bibliometric analysis underscores the growing interest in ALL research, peaking between 2016 and 2017. While foundational studies on ALL anatomy and biomechanics appear saturated, future research should prioritize clinical outcomes in terms of failure rate, reoperation, the long-term efficacy of ACL-ALL reconstruction, and advancements in imaging techniques.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 3Irisin Pathways in Hearts of Type 1 Diabetic Adult Male Rats Following 6 Weeks of Moderate and High-Volume Aerobic Exercise on a Treadmill(Springernature, 2023) Celik, Humeyra; Dursun, Ali Dogan; Tatar, Yakup; Omercioglu, Goktug; Bastug, MetinPurpose Exercise-mediated protection from cardiomyopathy in diabetes through myokines raises the question of what volume of exercise should be performed. Irisin pathway molecules (consisting of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1 alpha), irisin, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors-alpha (PPAR-alpha) and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1)), which have been shown to be mostly expressed in the heart, are thought to have beneficial effects on diabetic heart. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effects of different exercise protocols on irisin pathway in Type 1 diabetic heart. Methods Diabetic (60 mg/kg streptozotocin i.p.) and healthy Wistar Albino rats (n = 60) were trained under moderate and high-volume exercise protocols on rat treadmill for 6 weeks. After killing, mRNA transcript and protein abundance of PGC-1 alpha, irisin, PPAR-alpha, and UCP1 were determined in the left ventricles of healthy and diabetic rats. Results PPAR-alpha, FNDC5, and UCP1 mRNA levels increased significantly in healthy moderate-volume exercise group (HMVE) compared to healthy high-volume exercise (HHVE) and diabetic moderate-volume exercise groups (DMVE). Moreover, protein levels of irisin and UCP1 also elevated significantly in the diabetic high-volume exercise group (DHVE) compared to the healthy control group (HC), although there was no significant difference between the groups in PPAR-alpha. Conclusion Irisin and UCP1 protein values increased due to HHEV in the heart of Type 1 diabetic rats, but PPAR-alpha values did not change; it shows that HHEV is suitable for the heart of Type 1 diabetic rats in terms of the benefits of the pathway of irisin.Review Citation - WoS: 28Citation - Scopus: 22Enhanced Selex Platforms for Aptamer Selection With Improved Characteristics: a Review(Springernature, 2024) Didarian, Reza; Ozbek, Hatice K.; Ozalp, Veli C.; Erel, Ozcan; Yildirim-Tirgil, NimetThis review delves into the advancements in molecular recognition through enhanced SELEX (Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment) platforms and post-aptamer modifications. Aptamers, with their superior specificity and affinity compared to antibodies, are central to this discussion. Despite the advantages of the SELEX process-encompassing stages like ssDNA library preparation, incubation, separation, and PCR amplification-it faces challenges, such as nuclease susceptibility. To address these issues and propel aptamer technology forward, we examine next-generation SELEX platforms, including microfluidic-based SELEX, capillary electrophoresis SELEX, cell-based aptamer selection, counter-SELEX, in vivo SELEX, and high-throughput sequencing SELEX, highlighting their respective merits and innovations. Furthermore, this article underscores the significance of post-aptamer modifications, particularly chemical strategies that enhance aptamer stability, reduce renal filtration, and expand their target range, thereby broadening their utility in diagnostics, therapeutics, and nanotechnology. In this current study, we used the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) for the acceptance of AI chatbots in the educational environment. The expanded model included the variables of AI chatbot trust and individual innovativeness. A total of 306 university students participated in the research. According to the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) results, the model explained 61% of the variance in intention to use AI chatbots for educational purposes. This study shows that AI trust and individual innovativeness offer deeper insights into the research model. The accelerated failure time (AFT) model, an alternative to the Cox proportional hazard model in survival analysis, lacks sufficient R packages for HD time-to-event data under the Bayesian paradigm. To address this gap, we develop the R package afthd. This tool facilitates advanced AFT modeling, offering Bayesian analysis for univariate and multivariable scenarios. This work includes diagnostic plots and an open-source R code for working with HD data, extending the conventional AFT model to the Bayesian framework of log-normal, Weibull, and log-logistic AFT models. The methodology is rigorously validated through simulation techniques, yielding consistent results across parametric AFT models. The application part is also performed on two different real HD liver cancer datasets, which reveals the proposed method's significance by obtaining inferences for survival estimates for the disease. Our developed package afthd is competent in working with HD time-to-event data using the conventional AFT model along with the Bayesian paradigm. Other aspects, like missing values in covariates within HD data and competing risk analysis, are also covered in this article.
