Article Citation - WoS: 18Citation - Scopus: 18Stability Analysis of 2-D Linear Discrete Systems Based on the Fornasini-Marchesini Second Model: Stability With Asymmetric Lyapunov Matrix(Academic Press inc Elsevier Science, 2014) Singh, VimalThe stability of two-dimensional (2-D) linear discrete systems based on the Fornasini-Marchesini local state-space (LSS) model is considered. A stability criterion using the asymmetric Lyapunov matrix P is presented. A special case of the criterion is discussed. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. The criterion takes the form of linear matrix inequality (LMI) and, hence, is computationally tractable. The criterion is a generalization and improvement over an earlier criterion. An example shows the effectiveness of the new criterion. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. The criterion is a generalization over an earlier criterion due to Liu and Michel. The generalized criterion has the feature that Lyapunov matrix P is not restricted to be symmetric, i.e., P can be even unsymmetric. A modified form of the criterion is also presented. Two examples showing the effectiveness of the generalized approach to yield new 2-D stability results are provided. To the best of author's knowledge, the use of unsymmetric P to obtain new 2-D stability conditions (i.e., conditions which are outside the scope of symmetric P) is demonstrated, for first time, in this paper. The criterion, which is basically a new version of an earlier criterion due to Liu and Michel, is a generalization and improvement over a recently reported criterion. The generalization is due to the fact that the use of even unsymmetric Lyapunov matrix P is permitted. An example illustrating the improvement realized from the present criterion is given. Under a certain assumption, the criterion turns out to be an improvement over a criterion due to El-Agizi and Fahmy pertaining to two's complement arithmetic and has a form similar to a criterion due to Xiao and Hill pertaining to saturation arithmetic. Examples show the effectiveness of the new criterion. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. The criterion is a modified form of a well-known criterion due to Mills, Mullis, and Roberts. The criterion is in the form of linear matrix inequality and, hence, computationally tractable. An example shows the effectiveness of the modified criterion. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. An example showing the effectiveness of the present criterion is given. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The form of the criterion is unconventional in that it offers the flexibility of using even an unsymmetric Lyapunov matrix P. A recently reported criterion is shown to be a special case of the present criterion. An example shows the effectiveness of the new criterion. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. In their approach, as in most (or probably all) existing approaches, the matrix P is assumed to be symmetric. In this communique, it is shown that their approach is such as to be extended to allow the use of an unsymmetric matrix P. Taking note of this, a more general form of their criterion is presented. A modified form of the criterion is also presented. Examples show the effectiveness of the generalized approach. To the best of author's knowledge, this communique is the first report of exploiting an unsymmetric P to obtain a stability condition with reduced conservatism. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The criterion is in the form of a linear matrix inequality (LMI) and, hence, computationally tractable. Splitting the two's complement nonlinearity sector [-1, 1] into two smaller sectors, [0, 1] and [-1, 0], together with using a type of "generalized" sector condition by involving saturation nonlinearity, is the novel feature in the present proof. A special case of the criterion is highlighted. The effectiveness of the present approach is demonstrated by showing its ability to establish the two's complement overflow stability region, in the parameter space, for a second-order digital filter.
