An Intelligent Fuzzy Object-Oriented Database Framework for Video Database Applications
(Elsevier, 2009) Ozgur, Nezihe Burcu; Koyuncu, Murat; Yazici, Adnan
Video database applications call for flexible and powerful modeling and querying facilities, which require an integration or interaction between database and knowledge-based technologies. It is also necessary for many real life video database applications to incorporate uncertainty, which naturally occurs due to the complex and subjective semantic content of video data. In this study, firstly, we introduce a fuzzy conceptual data model to represent the semantic content of video data. For that purpose, UML (unified modeling language) is utilized and extended to represent uncertain information along with video specific properties. Secondly, we present an intelligent fuzzy object-oriented database framework for video database applications. The introduced fuzzy conceptual model is used in this framework, which provides modeling of complex and rich semantic content and knowledge of video data including uncertainty. Moreover, it supports various flexible queries including (fuzzy) semantic, temporal and (fuzzy) spatial queries, based on the video data model. We think that the presented conceptual data model and the framework can be used for any video database application. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A FUZZY CONCEPTUAL MODEL FOR MULTIMEDIA DATA WITH A TEXT-BASED AUTOMATIC ANNOTATION SCHEME
(World Scientific Publ Co Pte Ltd, 2009) Kucuk, Dilek; Burcuozgur, N.; Yazici, Adnan; Koyuncu, Murat
The size of multimedia data is increasing fast due to the abundance of multimedia applications. Modeling the semantics of the data effectively is crucial for proper management of it. In this paper, we present a fuzzy conceptual data model for multimedia data which is also generic in the sense that it can be adapted to all multimedia domains. The model takes an object-oriented approach and it handles fuzziness at different representation levels where fuzziness is inherent in multimedia applications and should be properly modeled. The proposed model also has the nice feature of representing the structural hierarchy of multimedia data as well as the spatial and temporal relations of the data. The model is applied to the news video domain and implemented as a fuzzy multimedia database system where it turns out to be effective in representing the domain and thereby provides an evidence for the general applicability of the model. The model is accompanied by an automatic multimedia annotation scheme which makes use of information extraction techniques on the corresponding multimedia texts.

An Intelligent Multimedia Information System for Multimodal Content Extraction and Querying
(Springer, 2018) Yazici, Adnan; Koyuncu, Murat; Yilmaz, Turgay; Sattari, Saeid; Sert, Mustafa; Gulen, Elvan
This paper introduces an intelligent multimedia information system, which exploits machine learning and database technologies. The system extracts semantic contents of videos automatically by using the visual, auditory and textual modalities, then, stores the extracted contents in an appropriate format to retrieve them efficiently in subsequent requests for information. The semantic contents are extracted from these three modalities of data separately. Afterwards, the outputs from these modalities are fused to increase the accuracy of the object extraction process. The semantic contents that are extracted using the information fusion are stored in an intelligent and fuzzy object-oriented database system. In order to answer user queries efficiently, a multidimensional indexing mechanism that combines the extracted high-level semantic information with the low-level video features is developed. The proposed multimedia information system is implemented as a prototype and its performance is evaluated using news video datasets for answering content and concept-based queries considering all these modalities and their fused data. The performance results show that the developed multimedia information system is robust and scalable for large scale multimedia applications.

Security Awareness Level of Smartphone Users: an Exploratory Case Study
(Hindawi Ltd, 2019) Koyuncu, Murat; Pusatli, Tolga
As smartphone technology becomes more and more mature, its usage extends beyond and covers also applications that require security. However, since smartphones can contain valuable information, they normally become the target of attackers. A physically lost or a hacked smartphone may cause catastrophic results for its owner. To prevent such undesired events, smartphone users should be aware of existing threats and countermeasures to be taken against them. Therefore, user awareness is a critical factor for smartphone security. This study investigates the awareness level of smartphone users for different security-related parameters and compares the awareness levels of different user groups categorized according to their demographic data. It is based on a survey study conducted on a population with a different range of age, education level, and IT security expertise. According to the obtained results, in general, the awareness level of participants is fairly low, which needs considerable improvement. In terms of age, the oldest group has the lowest level followed by the youngest group. Education level, in general, has a positive effect on the awareness level. Having knowledge about IT is another factor increasing the security awareness level of smartphone users.

A Deep Neural Network-Based Advisory Framework for Attainment of Sustainable Development Goals 1-6
(Mdpi, 2020) Emmanuel, Okewu; Ananya, M.; Misra, Sanjay; Koyuncu, Murat
Research in sustainable development, program design and monitoring, and evaluation requires data analytics for the Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) not to suffer the same fate as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs were poorly implemented, particularly in developing countries. In the SDGs dispensation, there is a huge amount of development-related data that needs to be harnessed using predictive analytics models such as deep neural networks for timely and unbiased information. The SDGs aim at improving the lives of citizens globally. However, the first six SDGs (SDGs 1-6) are more relevant to developing economies than developed economies. This is because low-resourced countries are still battling with extreme poverty and unacceptable levels of illiteracy occasioned by corruption and poor leadership. Inclusive innovation is a philosophy of SDGs as no one should be left behind in the global economy. The focus of this study is the implementation of SDGs 1-6 in less developed countries. Given their peculiar socio-economic challenges, we proposed a design for a low-budget deep neural network-based sustainable development goals 1-6 (DNNSDGs 1-6) system. The aim is to empower actors implementing SDGs in developing countries with data-based information for robust decision making.

An Inheritance Complexity Metric for Object-Oriented Code: a Cognitive Approach
(Springer india, 2011) Misra, Sanjay; Akman, Ibrahim; Koyuncu, Murat
Software metrics should be used in order to improve the productivity and quality of software, because they provide critical information about reliability and maintainability of the system. In this paper, we propose a cognitive complexity metric for evaluating design of object-oriented (OO) code. The proposed metric is based on an important feature of the OO systems: Inheritance. It calculates the complexity at method level considering internal structure of methods, and also considers inheritance to calculate the complexity of class hierarchies. The proposed metric is validated both theoretically and empirically. For theoretical validation, principles of measurement theory are applied since the measurement theory has been proposed and extensively used in the literature as a means to evaluate the software engineering metrics. We applied our metric on a real project for empirical validation and compared it with Chidamber and Kemerer (CK) metrics suite. The theoretical, practical and empirical validations and the comparative study prove the robustness of the measure.

Slim-Tree and Bitmatrix Index Structures in Image Retrieval System Using Mpeg-7 Descriptors
(Ieee, 2008) Acar, Esra; Arslan, Serdar; Yazici, Adnan; Koyuncu, Murat
Content-based retrieval of multimedia data has still been an active research area. The efficient retrieval in natural images has been proven a difficult task for content-based image retrieval systems. In this paper, we present a system that adapts two different index structures, namely Slim-Tree and BitMatrix, for efficient retrieval of images based on multidimensional low-level features such as color, texture and shape. These index structures also use metric space. We use MPEG-7 Descriptors extracted from images to represent these features and store them in a native XML database. The low-level features; Color Layout (CL), Dominant Color (DC), Edge Histogram (EH) and Region Shape (RS) are used in Slim-Tree and BitMatrix and aggregated by Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) method to find final similarity between any two objects. The experiments included in the paper are in the subject of index construction and update, query response time and retrieval effectiveness using ANMRR performance metric and precision/recall scores. The experimental results strengthen the case that uses BitMatrix along with Ordered Weighted Averaging method in content-based image retrieval systems.

Comparison of Qos Architectures for Voip Traffics in Ipv4 and Ipv6
(Ieee, 2016) AL-Fayyadh, Hayder; Koyuncu, Murat
The Internet has become an integral part of human's life with an ever increasing number of applications and services that it provides to its customers. Both the numbers of Internet users and services provided by the Internet continue to rise tremendously. Quality of Service (QoS) is the ability of a network to provide better services for the users to divide the bandwidth according to the needs of different applications. With an increase in demand for multimedia applications like video streaming, VoIP and video conferencing, larger bandwidth requirement increases drastically since such applications are very sensitive to delay, packet loss, and jitter. IPv6 has new features which are designed to improve QoS supported by IPv4, as well as other improvements. This paper gives a comparative analysis of QoS architectures, namely Integrated Services (IntServ) and Differentiated Services (DiffServ), which are examined to see their effects for Voice over IP (VoIP) in IPv4 and IPv6 environments. For comparisons, OPNET Modeler is used for network modeling and testing. The obtained test results show the importance of IPv6 to support multimedia applications on the Internet.
