    Increasing Creativity With Unusual Designs

    Creativity is important in synthesizing new ideas. For the engineering students, there are different methods to increase the level of creativity. Also, the unusual designs stimulate the students' creativity helping them to think innovatively. The assessment tool CEDA (Creative Engineering Design Assessment) is applied with minor modifications (CEDA-modified) to measure creativity in IE 101 Introduction to Engineering course. The CEDA score is modified by using AHP method to decrease the subjectivity of the assessment criteria. The study is applied to 49 industrial engineering students as an exam question. The question asked requires developing five advantages to an unusual design given. Male students developed more ideas compared to female students when they face with unusual design. More designs may be required to discuss through out the term and a proper term project that requires more design may be submitted to increase the success level.

    A Survey on Lifelong Learning and Project-Based Learning Among Engineering Students

    Lifelong learning is a highly important issue that most of the governments emphasize on their education programs. It is commonly known that there are various requirements such as learning how to learn, improving communication skills, teamwork abilities and controlling time-money etc. In order to successful in professional life, besides theoretical knowledge. Most of these mentioned requirements are even needed in our daily life to be able to learn efficiently, in any desired field. This study presents the results of a survey carried out to evaluate engineering students' viewpoints regarding lifelong learning and project-based learning. Their perspective on "learning-by-doing" is also investigated. Several aspects in engineering are considered, and evaluation is formed according to these aspects. The importance of theoretical knowledge, oral and written communication skills, economic perspectives, time and budget control, teamwork abilities, learning-by-project and learning-by-doing are the parameters evaluated in the survey. A descriptive analyze is performed in order to evaluate the engineering students' viewpoint about learning at Atilim University. The proposed survey is conducted with 80 students from Faculty of Engineering and the results are illustrated. Based on results, the main issue that the participants highlight is the need of change in learning methods and they are underlying that they want to get integrated more into real world. This study may help the mentors to design a new curriculum for achieving success in the field, which will also be a pioneer the success in every field of life. (C) 2013 The Authors.     Maintenance, Sustainability and Extendibility in Virtual and Remote Laboratories

    This study presents discussions on sustainability of Virtual and Remote Laboratories (VRL), and provides challenges toward maintenance of VRLs. Technical and pedagogical issues in extension and sustenance of VRLs are discussed with the experiences of the authors gained in the development of a VRL system, European Remote Radio Laboratory (ERRL) platform. Moreover, the study presents actions to be taken in sustenance plan and expendability of VRL system with the advances in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and educational technologies along with the needs of educators and learners in formal education.     On the Sums of Distributions of Order Statistics From Exchangeable Random Variables

    In this paper, we obtain an expression between the sums of the marginal distributions of the order statistics and the common marginal distribution of an exchangeable random sequence.     Lobatto IIIA-IIIB discretization of the strongly coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation

    In this paper, we construct a second order semi-explicit multi-symplectic integrator for the strongly coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation based on the two-stage Lobatto IIIA-IIIB partitioned Runge-Kutta method. Numerical results for different solitary wave solutions including elastic and inelastic collisions, fusion of two solitons and with periodic solutions confirm the excellent long time behavior of the multi-symplectic integrator by preserving global energy, momentum and mass.     Determining Learning Styles of Engineering Students To Improve the Design of a Service Course

    Students learn in different ways and instructors must design their courses to meet the needs of those students. The purpose of this study is to determine learning styles of engineering students at Atilim University for a service course. A VARK questionnaire was administrated to the students who were enrolled in this course and learning styles of these students from different departments were determined and compared.     Computing reliability indices of repairable systems via signature

    The purpose of this paper is to show the usefulness of system signature for computing some important reliability indices of repairable systems. In particular, we obtain signature-based expressions for stationary availability, rate of occurrence of failure, and mean time to the first failure of repairable systems. Using these expressions we compute corresponding reliability indices of all systems with three and four components. Computational results are also presented for consecutive-k-within-m-out-of-n:F and m-consecutive-k-out-of-n:F systems. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    On the Lifetime of a Random Binary Sequence

    Consider a system with m elements which is used to fulfill tasks. Each task is sent to one element which fulfills a task and the outcome is either fulfillment of the task ("1") or the failure of the element ("0"). Initially, m tasks are sent to the system. At the second step, a complex of length m(1) is formed and sent to the system, where m(1) is the number of tasks fulfilled at the first step, and so on. The process continues until all elements fail and the corresponding waiting time defines the lifetime of the binary sequence which consists of "1" or "0".     (re) Thinking the Basics of Design: Can Fairytales Be Teaching Tools?

    Discussing the basics of design can be considered as one of the main issues in trying to understand the fundamentals of the first year design studio. Particularly the first semester of basic design studio teaches basic design concepts such as types of relationships, types of organizations, frame of references and Gestalt principles. All of them are used to teach students to understand the essence of the problem and are utilized to create their own solutions and their design language. It is an impetus process in which exercises are based on basic design concepts and creativity. In general, the concept of creativity is used in the production of an artwork; however, assuming that creativity is a skill that can be improved in a design process, it can also be considered that creativity is a contributory teaching tool. From this perspective, this study aims to find out if basic design concepts affect design of the first year students in relation to creativity. For this purpose, as a final work, students were asked to design a given field in the light of a fairytale. Whether the use of basic design concepts gives an impulse to the creativity of the students and this creativity turns into a successful design are matters of analysis. The study was conducted with the first year students of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design from Atilim University, Ankara, Turkey. The experts evaluated the final works of the students within the framework of basic design concepts and creativity. Results of the study showed that creativity of the basic design work depends on the number of used basic design concepts, which can be concluded as creativity of the first year students can be improved by teaching basic design concepts in basic design education.     Problems Encountered by a Newly Graduated Graphics Designer

    Graphics design education should aim to prepare the student for the existing graphics and advertising market. It is assumed that it does. However, graphics design today is fairly wide, flexible and experimental. Such experimentalism may carry graphics design far beyond conventional two-dimensional design. Combining three-dimensional design with computer games, website interface requirements and the discipline of animation, new products can be created. This study deals with the developing graphics design world, graphics design education and different levels of graphics design requirements within the sector.
