An Investigation on the Dna Binding Activities of Melamine, Cyanuric Acid and Uric Acid
(Editura Acad Romane, 2021) Senol, Ali; Devrim, Alparslan Kadir; Sudagidan, Mert; Ozalp, Veli Cengiz
Melamine can be added to various foods such as milk, milk powder, baby food, pet, and livestock feed for cheating purposes due to its high nitrogen content. Regarding its usage in food products, there is a need to investigate its possible interactions with DNA. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the interactions of melamine and its metabolized products, cyanuric acid and uric acid with genomic DNA, isolated from eukaryotic (calf thymus) and prokaryotic (Staphylococcus aureus) sources. UV-absorbance spectrophotometry, fluorescence spectrophotometry, and agarose gel electrophoresis techniques were used to evaluate these interactions. The five different concentrations of melamine, cyanuric acid, and uric acid were incubated with fixed DNA concentration and it was determined that the test compounds interacted with the DNA molecules. The data obtained by UV-absorbance and fluorescence spectrophotometry techniques revealed an increase in wave peaks observed with the increasing substance concentration. After the obtained data of the aforementioned techniques were evaluated together, it was concluded that melamine, cyanuric acid, and uric acid bonded to the eukaryotic and prokaryotic genomic DNA materials via groove binding.

A Study on the Performance Evaluation of Wavelet Decomposition in Transient-Based Radio Frequency Fingerprinting of Bluetooth Devices
(Wiley, 2022) Almashaqbeh, Hemam; Dalveren, Yaser; Kara, Ali
Radio frequency fingerprinting (RFF) is used as a physical-layer security method to provide security in wireless networks. Basically, it exploits the distinctive features (fingerprints) extracted from the physical waveforms emitted from radio devices in the network. One of the major challenges in RFF is to create robust features forming the fingerprints of radio devices. Here, dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) provides an accurate way of extracting those robust features. However, its performance on the RFF of Bluetooth transients which fall into narrowband signaling has not been reported yet. Therefore, this study examines the performance of DT-CWT features on the use of transient-based RFF of Bluetooth devices. Initially, experimentally collected Bluetooth transients from different smartphones are decomposed by DT-CWT. Then, the characteristics and statistics of the wavelet domain signal are exploited to create robust features. Next, the support vector machine (SVM) is used to classify the smartphones. The classification accuracy is demonstrated by varying channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the size of transient duration. Results show that reasonable accuracy can be achieved (lower bound of 88%) even with short transient duration (1024 samples) at low SNRs (0-5 dB).

Effect of H2o Ratio on Photocatalytic Activity of Sol-Gel Tio2 Powder
(Ice Publishing, 2013) Agartan, Lutfi; Kapusuz, Derya; Park, Jongee; Ozturk, Abdullah
Effect of water/tetraethyl orthotitanate molar ratio (R) on the formation and morphology of sol-gel-derived titania powder has been studied. Solutions for R of 3 and 5 have been prepared. Initial viscosity of the solutions and viscosity of the gels prepared by aging the solutions for some time were measured. Results revealed that lower gel viscosities lead to better crystallization of the aerogel. Aerogels were dried at 80 degrees C for 24 h and then calcined at 300 degrees C for 1 h to obtain titania powders. The structural and morphological analyses of the powders were performed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic characterization techniques. Titania particles obtained after calcination composed of only anatase phase and were in the size range of 9-50 nm. The photocatalytic activity of the powders was evaluated in terms of the degradation of methylene blue (MB) solution under UV (ultraviolet) illumination. A diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was used for the band gap energy measurements. Results revealed that R had a profound effect on the particle morphology and photocatalytic activity of sol-gel-derived titania powders. The titania powders prepared from the solution for R of 5 degraded 99.47% of MB solution under UV illumination in 90 min.

Heterogeneity in Classes: Cooperative Problem-Solving Activities Through Cooperative Learning
(Fac Teacher Education, 2014) Cigdemoglu, Ceyhan; Kapusuz, Kamil Yavuz; Kara, Ali
Teachers, from primary schools to college, experience challenges regarding both increased class sizes and a greater diversity of students having a broad spectrum of abilities, interests, needs, and goals. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of cooperative learning through Cooperative Problem-Solving (CPS) activities on homogenous and heterogeneous grouping in an engineering course. As a mixed method design, the study utilized both quantitative and qualitative data. The participants, 47 engineering students selected conveniently, were enrolled in a communication systems course. The analysis of the quantitative data indicated that no significant difference (p=.791) exists between the ways in which the students in homogenous and the students in heterogeneous group understand communication systems. In order to reveal the perceptions of students regarding the implementation, they were interviewed at the end of the semester. The qualitative data obtained from these interviews suggests that students prefer heterogeneous to homogenous grouping. The findings also imply that further research should concentrate on heterogeneous grouping strategies and more detailed qualitative data in order to reveal what kind of patterns emerge from students' interactions in different groupings.

University Libraries Staff-User Relationship and the Conformity of the Current Situation To the Standard
(Turkish Librarians Assoc, 2017) Kaya, Huseyin
University libraries are one of the most important units in universities that aim to provide the best service to their users. Because it is their libraries that guide to the universities where science is produced therefore, human resources in the university libraries have the same equal importance. In order to provide better service in the university libraries, one of the indispensible element is to have certified librarians who are expert on their topics. In this research, the evaluation of the relationship between the number of staff that the foundation & the public libraries has and the number of users they have and the number of staff with the librarianship degree have been made. In addition, number of users and staff standard in the work called "University Libraries in Turkey towards 2023, Current Situation, Problems, Standards and Solution Proposals" and suitability of the data to the standards that the resarcher has currently have been examined. A total of 74 university libraries, including 55 state and 19 foundation university libraries, participated in the work. The total number of staff and the number of staff with the librarianship degree are given in the data obtained. All the data obtained has been evaluated separately for public and foundation university libraries. As a result of the study, While the number of librarians in total staff in the state university libraries is 40.9 %, this figure is 56.9 % in the foundation university libraries. When compared to the standard prepared by YOK (Council of Higher Education) and the data of 74 university libraries, it is seen that university libraries are inadequate in terms of staff. In particular, there are no librarians in some foundation university libraries. Attention should be paid to personnel management in the university libraries to address this issue. In addition, the relevant state institutions and related associations should be informed.

Syntactic Scrambling in Broca’s Aphasia: a Turkish Sample
    (S. Karger AG, 2025) Arslan, B.; Çiyiltepe, M.M.; Karaman, M.
Introduction: Broca’s aphasia (BA) is a language disorder that causes grammatical errors in the language production skills of patients. Contemporary studies revealed the fact that patients with BA (PBA) also have difficulty in analyzing the meaning of phrases and sentences and comprehending the real meaning of the discourse produced by the speaker. The purpose of this study was to investigate possible effect of syntactic movement by changing the word positions in the sentence with morphological markers in order to produce clauses without changing the meaning on the phrasal comprehension skills of Turkish-speaking patients with BA. Method: A total of 300 participants were divided as study (n = 150) and control (n = 150) groups between ages of 27–89. A test that included 20 relative clauses and 9 noun clauses (in total 29 phrases) was assigned to the PBA and the control group (CG). Relative clause phrases originated from simple sentences by adding suffixes to the verb as a function of Turkish morphology. Each suffix indicated a specific noun, object, or subject, and each figure in the test was related to one of them. A researcher asked participants to match the demanded clause with the 6 possibly related pictures for relative clause and 3 for noun clauses. Results: Findings indicated that BA patients in our study had a lack of comprehending relative clauses due to the syntactic movement of words in the object and subject positions. Compared to the responses of the CG, PBA had significantly lower scores when the object and subject positions have moved from their original positions. BA patients also obtained significantly lower scores in object type questions. Conclusion: Our findings support the fact that comprehension processing in PBA should be investigated profoundly to be able to understand the nature of the disorder in different languages. In Turkish, syntactic movement of words to form a relative clause caused the BA patients to have significant problems to assign the semantic roles to the words in the existence of movement or change in their original positions. © 2025 S. Electrochemistry of Acetate-, Carbonate-, Sulfate-, and Dihydrogenphosphate-Bridged Dirhodium(ii) Complexes
(verlag Z Naturforsch, 2003) Yaman, SO; Önal, AM; Isci, H
Complexes, [Rh-2(B-B)(4)L-2](n) (B-B = CH3CO2-, L = CH3CN, H2O, Cl-, Br-, SCN-; B-B CO32-, SO42-, H2PO4-, L = H2O, Cl-, Br-, SCN-) were prepared and their cyclic voltammograms (CV) and electronic absorption spectra were measured in solution. The CV of the complexes exhibits a reversible one-electron transfer from a metal-based orbital. Constant potential electrolysis at the oxidation peak potential of [Rh-2(O2CCH3)(4)(NCCH3)(2)] in acetonitrile yielded [Rh-2(O2CCH3)(4)(NCCH3)(2)](+), a mixed valent Rh(II)-Rh(III) cation complex. The formation of the mixed valent complex was monitored by measuring electronic absorption spectra of the solution in situ during the oxidative electrolysis. The reductive electrolysis of the mixed valent complex solution, in the same electrolysis cell, yielded the original electronic absorption spectrum of the starting complex. The changes in the oxidation and reduction potentials of the complexes with different axial ligands, L = H2O, Cl-, Br-, SCN-, are correlated to the relative energy changes of HOMO and LUMO of the complexes, which indicates the metal-axial ligand sigma- and pi-bonding interactions. Spectroscopic and CV data indicate that the degree of a-interaction is Cl- > Br- > SCN-, and that of pi-interaction is Br- > SCN- > Cl-.

Public Policies and Social Movements: The Implications of Protest Movements on Mining Policy in Turkey
(Ankara Haci Bayram veli Univ, 2010) Ozen, Hayriye; Ozen, Suekrue; Department of Public Administration and Political Science
This article proposes that public policy and social movements literatures can help each one another achieve for a better understanding of the role of social movements in the process of public policy formation. In order to illustrate this suggestion, taking insights from both types of literatures, we investigate how and to what extent the anti-gold-mining protest movements in Izmir-Bergama, Usak-Esme, Izmir-Efemcukuru, and Canakkale-Balikesir have influenced the mining policy in Turkey since 1985. The results indicate that a centralized policy-making tradition can influence atin what stage of the policy-making process protest movements emerge, and what kindssorts of tactics are pursued. The results also show that the repressive attitude against the protest movements adopted by an advocacy coalition formed between the governments and multinational companies to further enforce the existing policy, can lead to the growth of thegrowing opposition against the existing policy through the emergence of new protest movements.
