The system under concern consists ofn1identical wind turbines andn2identical solar modules, and each turbine and module can be in one of two states as working or failed. The probability that the entire hybrid system withn=n1+n2components produces power at minimum levelkis computed and evaluated. The importance of single-wind turbine and solar module is also calculated to measure which renewable energy component is more critical and important. Extensive numerical results that are based on real data set are presented to illustrate the model.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1PMMA-Based Electrospun Composite Fibers for Dye Adsorption From Water(Sage Publications Ltd, 2025) Cakar, Ilknur; Yesil, Sertan; Bayram, GoknurPoly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and PMMA/poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based composite fibers were produced using electrospinning technique with two different additives; halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and boron phosphate (BPO4). The effect of the additives on the morphology, wettability and dye adsorption properties of electrospun fibers were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), water contact angle measurement and UV-VIS spectrophotometry. The results of SEM analysis indicated that addition of PEG resulted in thinner average fiber diameter and beaded structure. Additionally, it was also observed that incorporating both HNT and BPO4 to the PMMA solution caused increased fiber diameter which might be due to increased solution viscosity. For PMMA fibers containing 3 wt% HNT, the highest average diameter and water contact angle were measured as 2204 +/- 302 nm and 110.29 +/- 3.9 degrees, respectively. The produced fibers were tested for the capability to adsorb methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) from aqueous solutions. Dye adsorption capacity of the samples increased by addition of HNT and BPO4. According to adsorption capacity results, PMMA/PEG/BPO4 composite sample containing 5 wt% BPO4, with an adsorption capacity of 0.76 mg/g, was determined as adsorbent for kinetic and isotherm studies. The adsorption kinetics were well described by the pseudo-second-order model, and equilibrium data were correlated with the Langmuir model.Article Citation - WoS: 15Citation - Scopus: 21Tool-Life Modelling of Carbide and Ceramic Cutting Tools Using Multi-Linear Regression Analysis(Sage Publications Ltd, 2006) Amaitik, S. M.; Tasgin, T. T.; Kilic, S. E.This paper presents a study for the development of tool-life models for machining operations by means of a statistical approach called multi-linear regression analysis. The study was applied to a milling process for machining SAE 121 cast iron in a factory without interrupting the mass production. Different cutting tool materials under dry conditions were used in the cutting tests. Several machining experiments were performed and mathematical models for tool life have been postulated by using least-square regression analysis. The analysis was based on a first-order model in which the tool life is expressed as a function of two independent variables; cutting speed and feed rate. Analysis of variance was applied to check the adequacy of the mathematical models and their respective parameters. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) was used as a plasticizer. As flame retardant additives, ammonium polyphosphate (APP), tri-phenyl phosphate (TPP), and boron phosphate (BP) were used. Characterization of the composites was carried out by tensile test, impact test, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), limiting oxygen index (LOI), and UL-94 horizontal burning tests. In addition, TGA-FTIR analyses were carried out to understand the thermal degradation mechanism of composites during combustion. According to the SEM micrographs of the burnt surfaces of the samples, a smooth and flat structure is observed in PLA/PEG/5TPP-5BP sample, while a porous structure and branching formations are observed in other composite samples. In this paper, a new state-dependent nonlinear time-varying sliding mode control autopilot structure is proposed to cope with these dynamical and environmental complexities for an unmanned helicopter. The presented technique is based on freezing the nonlinear system equations on each time step and designing a controller using the frozen system model at this time step. The proposed method offers an improved performance in the presence of major disturbances and parameter uncertainties by adapting itself to possible dynamical varieties without a need of trimming the system on different operating conditions. Unlike the existing linear cascade autopilot structure, this study also proposes a nonlinear cascade state-dependent coefficient helicopter autopilot structure consisting of four separate nonlinear sub-systems. The proposed method is tested through the real time and PC-based simulations. To show the performance of the proposed robust method, it is also bench-marked against a linear sliding control control in PC-based simulations.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 7A New Strategy for Solving Store Separation Problems Using Openfoam(Sage Publications Ltd, 2022) Abuhanieh, Saleh; Akay, Hasan U.; Bicer, BarisThe ability of OpenFOAM to solve the problem of a store separating from an air vehicle (store separation problem) has been evaluated using a dynamic mesh (Overset/Chimera) technique for an industry-class (transonic and generic) benchmark test case. The major limitations of the standard libraries have been determined. To tackle these challenges, a new strategy has been proposed and implemented using only open-source libraries and tools. The strategy combines porting, modifying, and adapting an overset library from the OpenFOAM fork platform (foam-extend) to the standard OpenFOAM platform (ESI). Furthermore, in order to overcome the well-known weakness of the standard OpenFOAM compressible solvers, the newly adapted overset library was integrated with an open-source, density-based, and coupled solver (HiSA), which uses the OpenFOAM technology. Additionally, a force restrained model was developed to consider the externally applied forces on the store by the store ejectors. The accuracy of the developed strategy has been compared with wind tunnel tests and the solutions of two well-known commercial codes, showing good agreements with them. While the study has focused on simulations with inviscid Euler equations (typical of the test case considered here), the viscosity effect on the solution has also been studied with Navier-Stokes equations and compared with other results in the literature, showing minor differences. In this study, the damage parameter is measured and compared under quasi-static and industrial forming conditions (temperatures: 25 vs 200, 300 degrees C and strain rates: 10(-3)vs 10 s(-1)) for DP590 and DP800 steels. Resonance frequency and ultrasonic sound velocity techniques are utilized for the measurements to test the effectiveness and validity of each technique. At a given strain, the damage values can be up to 700% higher at industrial forming conditions, under which dynamic strain aging (DSA) controls the deformation behavior. DSA results in lower formability and is the likely mechanism responsible from the abnormal damage evolution. Measured damage parameters are also confirmed with the void fraction characterization by microscopy, which also provided details on the void shape and distribution with respect to the deformation conditions.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 5Numerical Investigation of Store Separation From Cavity Problems at High Speeds(Sage Publications Ltd, 2023) Abuhanieh, Saleh; Akay, Hasan U.In this work, the ability of open-source CFD tools to conduct store separation simulations from cavities is evaluated and validated using a generic test case from the literature. Firstly, the ability and accuracy of these tools for solving cavity flows at high speeds are evaluated. Secondly, their competence in predicting the trajectory of a generic store from a generic deep cavity is checked. Finally, and in order to reduce the associated computational costs, a release-time dependability factor from the recent literature is studied and evaluated. The obtained results using the selected open-source CFD tools matched quite well with the wind tunnel results. Furthermore, the results show that predicting the release-time dependability using a quantified index/factor can be a potential remedy for reducing the computational cost for this type of CFD simulations.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 9Reliability of the Two-Unit Priority Standby System Revisited(Sage Publications Ltd, 2022) Eryilmaz, Serkan; Finkelstein, MaximThis paper deals with reliability assessment of the repairable two-unit cold standby system when the first, main unit has the better performance level than the second one. Therefore, after its repair, the main unit is always switched into operation. The new Laplace transform representation for the system's lifetime is obtained for arbitrary operation and repair time distributions of the units. For some particular cases, the Laplace transform of the system is shown to be rational, which enables the use of the matrix-exponential distributions for obtaining relevant reliability indices. The discrete setup of the model is also considered through the corresponding matrix-geometric distributions, which are the discrete analogs of the matrix-exponential distributions.
