    The consumers' social media use in choosing physicians and hospitals: the case study of the province of Izmir

    Manifested as a reflection of the Internet technology progress, web 2.0 has transformed communication among people to different dimensions while increasing the social use of Internet. Thus, the concept of social media has entered our lives. Blogs, forums, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube applications are but few of the social media platforms with active users exceeding millions. As in many other subjects, these and others are also environments where people share information and their positive or negative experiential views with respect to healthcare issues and services. Hence, the social media communication and exchange of information are deemed influential on the process of receiving health services. In the present study that aims to determine social media use of individuals in their choice of physicians, dentists and hospitals, a survey, as a data collection instrument, has been carried out to 947 residents of the province of Izmir. Individuals participating in the study have stated that they have used social media in choosing a physician (41.9% of the participants), dentist (34.1% of the participants) and hospitals (41.7% of the participants). The study has revealed that individuals are affected by social media in their healthcare choices. Copyright (C) 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    An examination of the relationship among conspicuous consumption, social media addiction, narcissism, and empathy: a research on university students

    The purpose of this study is to reveal the relationship between conspicuous consumption behaviour, social media addiction, narcissistic characteristics, and empathy for university students. Using a cross-sectional survey design, with a non-random sampling strategy, a total of 1,215 participants completed the online survey. Data were analysed through the structural equation modelling technique using the AMOS statistical analysis package to discover the relationship among variables. Findings indicated that social media addiction has a moderately positive relationship with conspicuous consumption, a weak negative relationship with empathy, and a moderately positive relationship with narcissism. As a result, both empathy and narcissism have an impact on conspicuous consumption, and social media addiction affects empathy. This study contributes to the literature in terms of exploring the relationship between empathy and conspicuous consumption together for young consumers.

    Integration of Social Media Into Engineering Education: a Comparative Study on Perceptions of Faculty and Students

    For a number of years, the effects of incorporating social media into education systems has invoked the interest of researchers, academicians and students. Yet, the enthusiasm of students in utilizing social media for learning is met with reluctance on the faculty's part in abandoning the traditional ways of teaching. This study compares the students' and faculty's acceptance of the utilization of social media in engineering education from different perspectives. A survey approach has been used for this purpose and 57 faculty and 85 students from the engineering faculties participated in the study. The research model used was tested using the least square regression technique. The results show existence of significant diversity between the faculty and students in the factors affecting the ethical usage. Concerning the general usage, this diversity exists in only the awareness. These results are expected to provide insight into the issues that act as barriers towards a more open, collaborative and learner-centered higher education platform.
