E.In this study, the effects of the sandwiching of a 70 nm thick ytterbium film between two layers of CdS on the structural, compositional, optical and electrical properties are investigated. The X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersion X-ray, visible light spectroscopy and impedance spectroscopy techniques are employed to achieve these effects. It was observed that, the nanosandwiching of Yb between two 500 nm thick films of CdS enhances the crystalline nature of the films without altering the lattice parameters. Particularly, the grain size is increased by 25%, the strain, the defect density and the stacking faults are reduced by 31.5%, 43.7% and 25%, respectively. Optically, the Yb nanosandwiching is observed to enhance the visible light absorbability by at least 2.7 times of the whole range and by 8 times at 1.64 eV. The enhancement of the absorbability is associated with shrinking in the band gap and more interband states. In addition, an increase in the real part of the dielectric constant by 54% is observed when Yb was nanosandwiched in the CdS structure. The modeling of the imaginary part allowed exploring the electron-plasmon interaction parameters. A remarkable increase in the drift mobility from 281 to 996 cm2/Vs associated with plasmon frequency enhancement from 0.84 to 1.38 GHz was determined upon Yb nanosandwiching. The effectiveness of this modeling was verified from the impedance spectra in the frequency domain of 0.01-1.80 GHz, which revealed wave trapping property of ideal values of return loss at notch frequency of 1.35 GHz. Furthermore, the electrical resistivity measurements on the studied samples have shown that the presence of Yb reduced the electrical resistivity and shifts the donor level closer to the conduction band of CdS. The studies nominate the nanosandwiched CdS for use in optical and microwave technologies as dual devices. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. F.; Taleb, M. F.In this article, we report the effects of insertion of yttrium, gold and yttrium-gold (YAu) metallic nano-slabs on the structural, optical and dielectric properties of ZnSe thin films. The ZnSe thin films which are prepared by the thermal evaporation technique under vacuum pressure of 10-5 mbar exhibit hexagonal structure. While the insertion of the 70 nm thick Y layers does not alter the lattice parameters and stress values, the Au and YAu layers increased the lattice parameters along the a- and c-axes and decreased the stress values. In addition, the insertion of these metallic layers slightly alters the value of the energy band gap and increases the width of the interbands. The light absorbability are increased by 1.4, 2.0 and 2.4 times upon insertion of Y, Au and YAu, slabs, respectively. On the other hand, the dielectric and optical conductivity analyses has shown that the use of the YAu stacked metal layers increases the real part of the dielectric constant, the optical conductivity, the drift mobility and extended the plasmon frequency range from 35.1 to 254.0 (Omega cm)(-1), from 1098 to 1766 cm(2)/vs and from 0.94-3.11 GHz to 2.13-4.83 GHz, respectively. The insertion of the two stacked metallic layers between two layers of ZnSe makes the ZnSe more appropriated for thin film transistor technology.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 8Design and performance of Yb/ZnS/C Schottky barriers(Elsevier Science Bv, 2017) Khusayfan, Najla M.; Al Garni, S. E.; Qasrawi, A. F.In this work, ZnS thin films are deposited onto glass and transparent ytterbium substrates under vacuum pressure of 10(-5) mbar. The effects of the Yb substrate on the structural, mechanical, optical, dielectric and electrical performance of the ZnS are explored by means of the energy dispersion X-ray analyzer, X-ray diffraction, UVeVIS spectroscopy, current-voltage characteristics and impedance spectroscopy techniques. The techniques allowed determining the lattice parameters, the grain size, the degree of orientation, the microstrain, the dislocation density, the optical and the excitonic gaps, the energy band offsets and the dielectric resonance and dispersion. The (111) oriented planes of glass/ZnS and Yb/ZnS exhibited 2.06% lattice mismatch between Yb and ZnS and degree of orientation values of 63% and 51.6%, respectively. The interfacing of the ZnS with Yb shrunk the energy band gap of ZnS by 0.50 eV. On the other hand, the electrical analysis on the Yb/ZnS/C Schottky device has revealed a rectification ratio of 3.48 x 10(4) at a biasing voltage of 0.30 V. The barrier height and ideality factor was also determined. Moreover, the impedance spectroscopy analysis have shown that the Yb/ZnS/C device is very attractive for use as varactor devices of wide tunability. The device could also be employed as microwave resonator above 1337 MHz. (C) 2016 Elsevier B. V. F.; Omareya, Olfat A.In this study, we have investigated the temperature dependent structural, optical and dielectric properties of Cu2Se thin films that are nanosandwiched with 50 nm thick ytterbium slab (CYC). The X-ray diffraction monitoring of the films during the heating process in the temperature range of 293-473 K has shown that the CYC films which contain both of the cubic and orthorhombic phases in its structure exhibits lattice expansion that increases the grain size and decreases the defect density, stacking faults and microstrain by 12.5% and by 28.9%, 12.8% and 11.3%, respectively. The CYC films show enhanced permanent crystallinity presented by high degree of orientation with reduction of the weight of the orthorhombic phase after cooling. On the other hand, a red shift in the energy band gap value is observed during the heating process. The analysis of the temperature dependent optical properties has shown a good correlation between the lattice expansion and energy band gap narrowing. In additions, the CYC samples are observed to exhibit negative capacitance effect that nominates the material for use in electronic circuits. The negativity of the capacitance decreased with increasing temperature due to the reduction in the defect density. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. F.A 100 mu m thick MgO film is used to design a metal semiconductor metal device. The device is characterized by means of current voltage characteristics in the dark and under various light energies in the photon energy range of 3.70-2.15 eV. A photovoltaic effect presented by an open circuit voltage of 0.12-0.47 V. short circuit current density of 3.9-10.5 mu A/cm(2), quantum efficiency of 0.662-0.052, and responsivity of 0.179-0.024 A/W under photoexcitation optical power of 2.2-28.2 mu W is observed. The device was also tested as a UV optical communication component. The test revealed a wide range of tunability and sensitivity for microwave resonant frequencies of 0.5 and 2.9 GHz. The differential resistance of the device exhibited different values at each applied ac signal frequency. When the frequency is fixed, the illuminated to the dark current ratio remained constant for all signal powers in the range of 0.00-20.0 dBm. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. M.A new p-n interface made of p-type MgO as an optical window to the n-type Ga4Se3S crystals is investigated by means of optical reflectance, transmittance and absorbance in the incident light wavelength (k) range of 200-1100 nm. The reflectivity spectral analysis as a function of angle of incidence for MgO, Ga4Se3S and the Ga4Se3S/MgO layers revealed Brewster angles of 75 degrees, 80 degrees and 70 degrees with the corresponding dielectric constants of 13.93, 32.16 and eMgO 7: 55eGa(4)Se(3)S, respectively. To remove Brewster condition of reflection and obtain maximum absorption, the light must be incident from the MgO side. A novel light absorbability is observed. Namely, for all k < 600 nm, the absorbance is dominated by the Ga4Se3S layer. For larger k values, while the crystal absorbance decreases significantly, the bilayer absorbance increased by four times in the visible range and three times in the IR range of spectrum. In the MgO layer, two distinct sets of band tails of the localized states with the widths of 2.30 and 1.26 eV are determined from the absorption spectral analysis. These band tails shift up to 2.32 and 1.44 eV when the interface is constructed. In addition, an indirect energy band gaps (Eg) which are located at 3.10, 2.13 and 1.90 eV for the MgO, Ga4Se3S and the Ga4Se3S/MgO layers, respectively, are determined. The Eg value of the crystal shifts by a 0.23 eV upon bilayer construction. The reflection properties, the band tails, the energy gaps and related shifts make the Ga4Se3S/MgO interface attractive for fabrication of solar cells, narrow barrier resonant tunneling diodes or quantum dots, and as an optical detector for tunable types of lasers. F.; Alsabe, Ansam M.In this work, two stacked layers of ZnSe thin films are nanosandwiched with aluminum slabs of variable thickness in the range of 10-100 nm. The films which are studied by the X-ray diffraction and ultra-violet visible light spectroscopy techniques exhibit interesting features presented by extension of the cubic lattice parameter, increase in the grain size and reduction in both of the microstrains and defect density. The Al nanosandwiching successfully engineered the energy band gap through narrowing it from 2.84 to 1.85 eV. In addition, the Al nanosandwiching is observed to form interbands that widens upon increasing the Al layer thickness. It also changed the electronic transition nature from direct allowed to direct forbidden type. Moreover, remarkable enhancement in the light absorbability by 796 times is observed near 1.72 eV for two stacked ZnSe layers nanosandwiched with Al slab of thickness of 100 nm. The dielectric constant is also increased three times and the dielectric tenability vary in the range of 3.0-1.2 eV. The nonlinearity in the dielectric spectra and the engineering of the band gap that become more pronounced in the presence of Al slabs make the ZnSe more attractive for nonlinear optical applications.Article Citation - Scopus: 3Effect of Y, Au and Yau Nanosandwiching on the Structural, Optical and Dielectric Properties of Znse Thin Films(S.C.
