There is a need to identify the complex interplay between various physiological mechanisms in primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) and cystic fibrosis (CF). The study investigated the interaction between respiratory function, exercise capacity, muscle strength, and inflammatory and oxidant/antioxidant responses in patients with PCD and CF. Methods. The study included 30 PCD patients, 30 CF patients, and 29 age and sex-matched healthy subjects. Exercise capacity was assessed using the modified shuttle walk test (MSWT). Handgrip strength (HGS) was used to evaluate general muscle strength. Oxidative stress-inflammatory parameters were also assessed. Pulmonary function test was performed by spirometry. Regarding the forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) 1 ) z-score, patients with PCD and CF were subdivided into normal, mild, and severe/moderate groups. Results. Forced vital capacity (FVC) z-scores were lower in PCD and CF patients than controls. FEV1, 1 , FEV1/ 1 / FVC, peak expiratory flow (PEF), and forced mid expiratory flow (FEF 25-75% ) z-scores were lower in PCD than in the other groups. HGS was lower in both mild PCD and normal CF patients relative to the controls. MSWT distance was lower in severe/moderate PCD patients than controls. Catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels did not differ significantly among the study groups, but superoxide dismutase (SOD) level in severe/moderate PCD, and glutathione (GSH) level in normal CF were higher than in controls. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) level was higher in patients with normal PCD and CF compared to the controls. IL-1 beta level was higher in PCD compared to controls. Additionally, correlations among these parameters were also determined in some patient groups. Conclusion. Homeostasis related to respiratory function, aerobic performance, muscle strength, inflammatory response, and oxidant/antioxidant balance were affected in PCD and CF. Methods: Data from patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with SOF/LDV ± RBV or SOF/RBV in 31 centers across Turkey between April 1, 2017, and August 31, 2018, were recorded in a nationwide database among infectious disease specialists. Demographics, clinical, and virological outcomes were analyzed. Results: A total of 552 patients were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 51.28 ± 14.2, and 293 (55.8%) were female. The majority had HCV genotype 1b infection (65%), 75.04% of the patients underwent treatment, and non-cirrhosis was present at baseline in 381 patients (72.6%). SOF/LDV ± RBV treatment was given to 477 patients and 48 patients received SOF/RBV according to HCV genotype. The total SVR12 rate was 99% in all patients. Five patients experienced disease relapse during the study and all of them were genotype 2. In patients infected with HCV GT2, SVR12 was 77.3%. SVR was 100% in all patients infected with other HCV genotypes. All treatments were well tolerated by patients without causing severe adverse events. Side effects and side effects-associated treatment discontinuation rates were 28.2% and 0.4%, respectively. Weakness (13.7%) was the common side effect. Conclusion: The present real-world data of 525 patients with HCV genotypes 1, 1a, 1b, 3, 4, and 5 who underwent SOF/LDV ± RBV treatment in Turkey demonstrated a high efficacy and safety profile. In this study, we aimed to examine the characteristics of COVID-19 patients who received immunosuppressive therapy Methods: Patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and followed in the quarantine wards of our hospital between 01.03.2020-24.05.2020 were included in the study. Patient information was obtained retrospectively from patient files and discharge reports, and 263 COVID-19 patients-aged 18 and over-were included in the study. Results: The median age of the patients who received immunosuppressive therapy was 60.74 +/- 1.96, and 39.6% of them were women. The average symptom duration of the patients examined in the study at the time of admission to the hospital was 4.59 +/- 0.29 days. There was a significant difference in age, lymphocyte count, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, C-reactive protein, ferritin, D-Dimer, blood oxygen saturation, fever after antiviral therapy, qSOFA score, and total hospital stay between the two groups that received and did not receive immunosuppressive therapy (p<0.05). The need for immunosuppressive therapy increased 15.9 times over the age of 40, 15.6 times in the presence of diffuse involvement on thoracic CT, 6.6 times in the presence of chronic disease, 2.7 times in the presence of thrombocytopenia, and 1.7 times in the presence of lymphopenia (p <0.05).Conclusions: We observed that patients whose immunosuppressive therapy was added to their treatment protocols were admitted to the hospital later than others, had more prevalent involvement in thorax CT, high acute phase reactants, low SPO2, and more than one underlying disease.Article Gold-Assembled Silica-Coated Cobalt Nanoparticles as Efficient Magnetic Separation Units and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrate Lütfiye Sezen Yildirim1,, Murat Kaya2,∗,, Mürvet Volkan(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2019) Yıldırım, Lütfiye Sezen; Kaya, Murat; Volkan, MürvetMagnetic and optical bifunctional nanoparticles that combine easy separation, preconcentration, and efficientSERS capabilities have been fabricated with high sensitivity and reproducibility through a low-cost method. Thesegold nanoparticles attached on magnetic silica-coated cobalt nanospheres (Co@SiO2 /AuNPs) display the advantageof strong resonance absorption due to gaps at nanoscale between neighboring metal nanoparticles bringing large fieldenhancements, known as “hot spots”. The prepared particles can be controlled by using an external magnetic field,which makes them very promising candidates in biological applications and Raman spectroscopic analysis of dissolvedorganic species. The magnetic property of the prepared particles lowers the detection limits through preconcentrationwith solid-phase extraction in SERS analysis. The performance of the prepared nanostructures was evaluated as a SERSsubstrate using brilliant cresyl blue (BCB) and rhodamine 6G (R6G) as model compounds. The solid-phase affinityextraction of 4-mercapto benzoic acid (4-MBA) using bifunctional Co@SiO2 /AuNPs nanoparticles followed by magneticseparation and the measurement of the SERS signal on the same magnetic particles without elution were investigated.Approximately 50-fold increase in SERS intensity was achieved through solid-phase extraction of 8.3 × 10 −6 M 4-MBAin 10 min.
