Cannabinoid Receptor Ligands Modulate Fibrosis and Inflammation in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: a Preliminary Study
(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2024) Kose, Sevil; Onen, Selin; Gizer, Merve; Boduroglu, Esin; Gonullu, Ugur; Korkusuz, Petek
Background/aim: No specific pharmacological treatment regimen for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) exists. Therefore, new antiinflammatory therapeutic strategies are needed. Cannabinoids (CBs), known for their inflammation-modulating and antifibrotic effects, may be potential medication candidates for treating IPF. We aim to evaluate the inflammation-modulating and antifibrotic effects of CB receptor (CBR) agonists and antagonists in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated normal human lung fibroblast, epithelial cells, IPF fibroblast cells, and monocytes. Materials and methods: We detected CBRs in normal human lung fibroblasts (LL24) and IPF fibroblast cells (LL29), epithelial cells (A549) and monocytes (THP-1) by flow cytometry. We determined TGF-(31, IL-8, and TNF-alpha inflammatory cytokines in the LL24, LL29, A549, and THP-1 cell culture supernatants on days 1 and 5 by ELISA. We evaluated the cell viability in LL24, LL29, and A549 cells on days 1, 3, and 5 spectrophotometrically and detected collagen Type I (ColI) production in the LL24 and LL29 cell culture supernatants on days 1, 3, and 5 by ELISA. Results: LL24, LL29, A549, and THP-1 cells exhibited CB1 (CB1R) and CB2 (CB2R) receptors. CB1R and CB2R agonists WIN55,2122 and JWH015 inhibited fibroblastic and epithelial cell proliferation on day 5. TGF-(31 and TNF-alpha release increased, while IL-8 release decreased in LL24, LL29, A549, and THP-1 cells in response to the administration of WIN55,212-2 and JWH015 at a 10-2 mM concentration. CB1R and CB2R antagonists AM251 and AM630 did not block agonistic responses, suggesting a nonclassical CBRmediated pathway. CB2R agonist JWH015 decreased ColI expression in IPF lung fibroblasts LL29 on day 3. Conclusion: These results suggest that CB signaling regulates the progression of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis via CBR activation. This may offer a potential pharmacological tool for developing antifibrosis therapies.

How Do Implant Threads and Diameters Affect the All-On Success? a 3d Finite Element Analysis Study
    (IOS Press BV, 2022) Zor,Z.F.; Klllnç,Y.; Erkmen,E.; Kurt,A.
BACKGROUND: The effect of different thread designs and diameters on the all-on-four concept is unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to clarify the differences in stress distribution of dental implants with various thread designs and diameters based on the all-on-four concept with three dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA). METHODS: A 3D model of a totally edentulous mandible was used to perform the FEA. Four different models (M1, M2, M3, and M4) including 3.5 and 4.3 mm diameter dental implants with active and passive threaded designs were generated. The dental implants were positioned according to the all-on-four concept. The Von Mises stresses on dental implants and maximum and minimum principal stresses (Pmax and Pmin) on bony structures were calculated under vertical, oblique and horizontal loads. RESULTS: For Von Mises stresses, the highest stress values were detected on the distal implants for all models. Distal implants had also the highest stress values for vertical loading. The Von Mises stresses were found to be concentrated around the implant's neck. In all models the highest Pmax and Pmin stresses occurred in the bone surrounding the distal implant. It was noted that the active threaded implants showed the highest Pmax and Pmin stress values. CONCLUSION: The implant thread design and diameter might have a strong influence on the stress values in the all-on-four concept. © 2022 - IOS Press. All rights reserved.

Besir Fuad's voltaire: Liberating the Individual
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Muhurcuoglu, Korhan
Besir Fuad (1852?-1887) is an obscure figure among late nineteenth century Ottoman intellectuals known for his materialistic views which were unprecedented under the Hamidian regime (1876-1909) and who shocked his contemporaries by committing suicide at an early age, leaving a note and a letter containing his last impressions and world view. Just months before his suicide, Besir Fuad published a Voltaire biography in which he commemorates him as an Enlightenment ideal to be emulated in humankind's struggle against religious intolerance. In this article, Besir Fuad's Voltaire (1886) is examined, arguing that the monograph was, though in an embryonic form, an early expression and defence of individual liberty, based on a materialistic world view that aims at demystification of the prevailing customs and morals as irrational and superstitious absurdities to pave the way for a future society in which the individual would be in liberty.

Automorphisms of the mapping class group of a nonorientable surface
(Springer, 2017) Atalan, Ferihe; Szepietowski, Blazej
Let S be a nonorientable surface of genus g >= 5 with n >= 0 punctures, and Mod(S) its mapping class group. We define the complexity of S to be the maximum rank of a free abelian subgroup of Mod(S). Suppose that S-1 and S-2 are two such surfaces of the same complexity. We prove that every isomorphism Mod(S-1) -> Mod(S-2) is induced by a diffeomorphism S-1 -> S-2. This is an analogue of Ivanov's theorem on automorphisms of the mapping class groups of an orientable surface, and also an extension and improvement of the first author's previous result.

Removal of Hazardous Air Pollutants Based on Commercial Coal Preparation Plant Data
(oficyna Wydawnicza Politechniki Wroclawskiej, 2013) Ozbayoglu,G.
This paper investigates the concentration, distribution, and rejection of hazardous air pollutants, specifically identified by the US Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, based on commercial coal preparation plant data obtained on-site. The samples were collected from the products of the different cleaning circuits of the operating plant. The concentrations of twelve potentially hazardous trace elements, including As, Cd, Co, Cr, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Th and U in those samples were determined. Compared with the average concentration of the trace elements in Turkish coals, the run-of-mine coal fed to the existing plant appears to contain higher concentrations of Cd, Hg, Mn, Th and V. However, the concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Mn, Se, Th, U and V of the run-of-mine coal are above the world averages. Cd, Cr, Hg, Mn, Pb and Th concentrations of run-of-mine coal were easily removed at commercial coal preparation plant refuse in the range of 51.8% to 77.4 %, while only a small reduction was achieved for U and V as they were concentrated in clean coals. The present study reveals that conventional coal preparation technologies could significantly reduce hazardous air pollutants concentrations in coal.

An Eye-Controlled Wearable Communication and Control System for Als Patients: Smarteyes
(Yildiz Technical Univ, 2017) Sumer, Emre; Uslu, I. Baran; Turker, Mustafa
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that involves the malfunctioning of motor neurons. The ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost subsequent to death of motor neurons. People with ALS present the greatest challenge regarding communication issues. Besides, caring for a loved one with ALS is not an easy task. In this study, we developed an eye-controlled wearable system called "SmartEyes" which improves the life qualities of ALS patients and their caregivers by offering two important skills. The first skill is communicating through predefined voice messages generated by a computer and the second one is controlling several peripherals located in the patient's environment. The developed system is novel in that; the patients can easily vocalize their needs and requests with a few sequential eye movements. Moreover, they can control several household items including desk lamp, rolling curtain, television and air conditioner in the same way. The preliminary experiments showed that the performance of the system is satisfactory. The accuracy of the system commands based on pupil gaze direction was tested on several users and about an accuracy of 89% was achieved. It is believed that the developed system has attracted the patients' and their caregivers' interest very much and this is the main motivation in improving our system.

Some Integral Type Common Fixed Point Theorems Satisfying Φ-Contractive Conditions
(Belgian Mathematical Soc Triomphe, 2014) Chauhan, Sunny; Karapinar, Erdal
In this manuscript, we obtain some common fixed point results of two pairs having the common limit range property in the setting of integral type contraction in the framework of symmetric (semi-metric) spaces. Moreover, we extend our results from two pairs of self-mappings to four finite families of self mappings to get common fixed points. Our results improve and extend a host of previously known results. Further, we establish some illustrative examples to show the validity of the main results.
