    Modeling and Measurement of Human Body Blockage Loss at 28 Ghz

    Millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) spectrum is an essential enabler to the fifth generation (5G) wireless technology. Humans are one of the most noticeable blockers that cause temporal variation in indoor radio channels. This paper presents human blockage measurements at 28 GHz, with several humans of different sizes. The effect of the crossing orientations of the human bodies is investigated for three different transmitter heights. A human blockage model based on the Fresnel diffraction scheme is shown to be applicable in estimating the human blockage loss in indoor radio links considering various body sizes, different crossing orientations, and different transmitter heights. The findings reported in this paper could help improve indoor radio channel models at 28 GHz bands for 5G technologies considering the presence of human body blockages.

    Effectiveness of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation and Myofascial Release Techniques in Patients With Subacromial Impingement Syndrome

    Purpose To compare the effectiveness of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and myofascial release technique in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome on pain, range of motion, muscle strength, quality of life, functionality and disability. Methods Thirty patients were randomly divided into two groups: proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation group (n = 15) and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation combined with myofascial release technique group (n = 15). Both treatment methods were performed 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Pain severity was assessed by Visuel Analog Scale, range of motion by a goniometer, muscle strength by digital hand dynamometer, quality of life by Nottingham health profile, functionality by arm, shoulder and hand problems questionnaire, disability by shoulder pain and disability index. All measurements were used before and after treatments. Pain severity, range of motion and muscle strength were also evaluated after the first session. Results After the treatment, shoulder pain, range of motion, muscle strength, functionality and disability were improved in two groups (p < 0.05). Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation showed improvement in pain, whereas myofascial release technique improved pain, physical activity, emotional state, sleep and total dimensions of life quality (p < 0.05). Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation was more effective in reducing activity pain, whereas myofascial release technique was more effective in increasing flexion, external and internal rotation range of motion, flexion and abduction muscle strength after the first session (p < 0.05). Conclusions The combined application of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and myofascial release technique has a more acute and cumulative positive effect on pain, range of motion, muscle strength, functionality, disability and quality of life in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome.

    Reconfiguring Stoicism: Convergence of Self-Improvement and Masculinity on TikTok

    This research examines the multimodal representations of Stoic content within TikTok. The research aimed to explore the multifaceted structure of an emerging digital philosophy discourse and its implications for contemporary socio-cultural dynamics. It explores a fragmented version of Stoicism, focussing on the affordances of algorithm-driven platforms and modularity principles. For multimodal discourse analysis, 20 highly viewed (>300,000) videos under the hashtags of #stoic and #stoicism are selected through purposeful sampling. It identifies the emergence of a fragmented Stoicism, built upon platform affordances and audio-visual modularity. Emerging themes include self-improvement, being dangerous and traditional masculinity remarking a divergence from popular and classical interpretations of Stoicism. Through these key themes, construction of an arbitrary link between hegemonic masculinity, glorified individualism and Stoicism is explored. Employing elements of aggression, self-isolation and self-improvement, TikTok content creates a novel discourse of Stoicism which is elusive, abstract, and reliant on visually driven narratives.

    Roof Shape Modelling for Multiple Diffraction Loss in Cellular Mobile Communication Systems

    The effects of roof shapes on multiple diffraction loss in cellular mobile communication systems are investigated. Building roofs are modelled as finitely conducting wedges with different, included angles (peaked roofs). Multiple diffraction loss, a measure of diffraction loss due to multiple building geometry, is computed by using the method of UTD (uniform theory of diffraction) for 90degrees and 120degrees wedges over the communication paths oblique to building blocks. The results, compared with the absorbing edge model, 0degrees wedge, show that multiple diffraction loss decreases with increasing wedge angle.

    On the Accuracy of an Emitter Localization Method Based on Multipath Exploitation in Realistic Scenarios

    This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of a method proposed for passive localization of radar emitters around irregular terrains with a single receiver in Electronic Support Measures systems. Previously, the authors targeted only the theoretical development of the localization method. In fact, this could be a serious concern in practice since there is no evidence regarding its accuracy under the real data gathered from realistic scenarios. Therefore, an accurate ray-tracing algorithm is adapted to enable the implementation of the method in practice. Then, realistic scenarios are determined based on the geographic information system map generated to collect high-resolution digital terrain elevation data, as well as realistic localization problems for radar emitters. Next, simulations are performed to test the localization method. Thus, the performance of the method is verified for practical implementation in the electronic warfare context for the first time. Lastly, the performance bounds of the method are discussed.

    Human Body Shadowing Variability in Short-Range Indoor Radio Links at 3-11 Ghz Band

    Measurement results for human body shadowing and local environmental effects in short-range indoor radio channels are presented. A narrowband measurement system, comprising a signal generator, two identical triangular monopoles and a spectrum analyser, was used in the measurements. When the radio link was periodically blocked by a human body with various objects in and around the link, fading depths of up to 15dB and even more were observed at spot frequencies of 3-11GHz band. Standard deviation and its range for human body blockage are estimated for different radio link scenarios simulating real environments. The distribution of human body shadowing was analysed and compared with known distribution functions.

    Biomechanical Comparison of Sinus Floor Elevation and Alternative Treatment Methods for Dental Implant Placement

    Objective: In this study, we compared the success of sinus lifting and alternative treatment methods in applying dental implants in cases lacking adequate bone due to pneumatization of the maxillary sinus. Methods: In a computer environment, 3D models were created using computerized tomography data from a patient. Additionally, implants and abutments were scanned at the macroscopic level, and the resulting images were transferred to the 3D models. Five different models were examined: a control model, lateral sinus lifting (LSL), short dental implant placement (SIP), tilted implant placement (TIP) and distal prosthetic cantilever (DC) use. Vertical and oblique forces were applied in each model. The compression, tension and von Mises stresses in each model were analyzed by implementing a finite element analysis method. Results: In our study, the LSL method was observed to be the closest to the control model. The TIP model showed high stress values under conditions of oblique forces but showed successful results under conditions of vertical forces, and the opposite results were observed in the SIP model. The DC model provided the least successful results among all models. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, the LSL method should be the first choice among treatment options. Considering its successful results under conditions of oblique forces, the SIP method may be preferable to the TIP method. In contrast, every effort should be made to avoid the use of DCs.

    Does Dexmedetomidine Induce Bone Regeneration in Cranial Defects in Rabbits

    Dexmedetomidine has been shown to exert protective and curative effects on various tissues and organs in different pathological processes. This study aimed to investigate the effect of dexmedetomidine on the regeneration process after making holes in the parietal bones of rabbits. Twenty-four male Oryctolagus cuniculus rabbits were allocated to three groups, and an 8-mm circular parietal critical-sized bone defect was induced in each animal. Group_C (control) received saline; Group_LD (low dose) was given dexmedetomidine 2.75 mu g/kg; Group_HD (high dose), dexmedetomidine 5.5 mu g/kg; all were administered intraperitoneally for 7 days. After 8 weeks the bones were examined by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and histomorphometry. The results indicated that regeneration was improved in both the dexmedetomidine-treated groups. The lower dose increased the bone volume ratio (BV/TV) more than the higher dose. Trabecular thickness, connectivity value, and connectivity density were also higher in Group_LD than in Group_HD. Significant intramembranous ossification was observed in the dexmedetomidine-treated groups, and active osteoblasts were seen at the margins of new bone trabeculae. We conclude that dexmedetomidine, especially at the lower dosage, increases osteoblastic activity and regeneration quality.

    Finite Element Analysis of Stress Distribution on Modified Retentive Tips of Bar Clasp

    This study used finite element analysis to evaluate the retentive tips of bar clasps made from different alloys and using different designs in order to determine whether or not different materials and tip forms are suitable for bar clasp applications. Co-Cr, Ti and Type IV Au alloys were selected based on their physical and mechanical properties. The 3D finite element models of three different bar clasp retentive tip geometries prepared from Co-Cr, Ti and Type IV Au alloys were constructed using the finite element software package MSC. Marc. Analysis of a concentrated load of 5N applied to the removable partial denture approach arms in an occlusal direction was performed. Although stress distribution and localisation within bar clasps with different retentive tips were observed to be similar and were concentrated in the approach arm, stress intensities differed in all models.

    Does the Angulation of the Mandibular Third Molar Influence the Fragility of the Mandibular Angle After Trauma To the Mandibular Body? a Three-Dimensional Finite-Element Study

    The relationship between mandibular third molar (M3) angulation and mandibular angle fragility is not well established. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of M3 angulation on the mandibular angle fragility when submitted to a trauma to the mandibular body region. A three-dimensional (3D) mandibular model without M3 (Model 0) was obtained by means of finite-element analysis (FEA). Four models were generated from the initial model, representing distoangular (Model D), horizontal (Model H), mesioangular (Model M) and vertical (Model V) angulations. A blunt trauma with a magnitude of 2000 N was applied perpendicularly to the sagittal plane in the mandibular body. Maximum principal stress (P-max) (tensile stress) values were calculated in the bone. The lowest P-max stress values were noted in Model 0. When the M3 was present extra stress fields were found around marginal bone of second molar and M3. Comparative analysis of the models with M3 revealed that the highest level of stress was found in Model V, whereas Model D showed the lowest stress values. The angulation of M3 affects the stress levels in the mandibular angle and has an impact on mandibular fragility. The mandibular angle becomes more fragile in case of vertical impaction when submitted to a trauma to the mandibular body region.
