Children with autism had significantly worse scores for all Munich Fitness Test (MFT) parameters except step test heart rate and had lower physical activity levels compared to the TD children (p < .05). There was no difference between groups in terms of postural deviations or maternal anxiety scores (p > .05). The MFT total score was associated with higher maternal quality of life scores (r = .605, p = .006). This study showed that despite participating in a regular physical activity program, children with mild to moderate autism have lower physical fitness and activity levels compared to their TD peers, whereas better physical fitness in children with autism has a positive effect on their mothers' quality of life.Article Citation - WoS: 12Citation - Scopus: 13Are Gender-Neutral Pronouns Really Neutral? We explored if grammatically gender-neutral pronouns in Finnish and Turkish, two grammatically genderless languages, are gender neutral or male biased, thereby activating male, rather than female, exemplars. We also tested whether differences in national level gender equality influence the male bias. Results indicated a male bias in both languages, whereas national level gender equality had no influence. We conducted a within-subject experiment design study with 164 college students in order to explore the impact of the search experience on cognitive self-esteem (CSE). Our preliminary findings revealed that search experience is an important factor that influences individuals' perception of their abilities to answer questions. This influence was observed regardless of whether they have access to search tools or not. The study is focused on three dimensions: organizational policies and practices, workplace environment, and social-familial factors. Another goal is to compare the perception of male and female software professionals concerning the impact of these dimensions on the careers of female software professionals. The study reveals that formally organizations provide gender-neutral policies, and currently the emphasis needs to be placed on their implementation. It has been observed that, on the whole, there is a favorable work environment and unbiased attitude toward female software employees. At the same time, we conclude that, despite significant progress, hurdles - mainly coming from the society and family traditions-still exist restraining flourishing careers of women in the software sector.Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 18Interactions in and Between Strategic Action Fields: a Comparative Analysis of Two Environmental Conflicts in Gold-Mining Fields in Turkey(Sage Publications inc, 2011) Ozen, Hayriye; Ozen, SukruThis study addresses how multinational corporations and protesters in an environmental struggle learn from the proximate struggles within the same field and how they structure the broader institutional field. Drawing on the literature integrating the social movement and new institutional theory, particularly the "strategic action fields" (SAFs) approach of Fligstein and McAdam, the authors comparatively study the interactions in and between two sequential environmental struggles in the field of gold mining in Turkey. The findings suggest that the interactive processes in an SAF and their consequences are largely built on the lessons drawn from both "successes" and "failures" in the proximate SAF that preceded it. Furthermore, those actors that act proactively are more likely to stabilize the SAF according to their interests. Finally, state interventions from the outside create temporary stability that involves the acquiescence of challengers, whereas the consent-seeking actions of incumbents are more likely to generate a permanent stability, stabilizing the broader field.Article Emotional Structure of Dialogues in Aging-Themed Movies: an Analysis on Text Mining(Sage Publications inc, 2024) Ergun, Duygu; Takan, Savas; Katipoglu, GokmenEmotions play an important role in the process of media messages transforming the audience. In our study, starting from the question of what might be the dominant emotions in old age-themed cinema texts, it is aimed to obtain clues about how old age is constructed in cinema through these emotions and what kind of emotional structure about old age is imposed on the audience. In this direction, emotion analysis was applied to the dialogues of 379 old age-themed films shot in a period of 100 years to determine what kind of emotional structure is constructed in all old age-themed cinema texts. As a result, it was found that the most dominant emotion was anger and disgust. The findings were categorized according to three different periods (1920-1969, 1970-1999, 2000-2020) and interpreted in a descriptive approach in a historical perspective and within the framework of the cinemas of the in addition to the EU, Germany, France, the UK, and Japan, Turkish cinema to make a comparison, where the most old age films were made. It is expected that our study will set an example for text mining research in cinema and offer an alternative perspective to the discussions on the phenomenon of aging in cinema.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Topical Intranasal Insulin Enhances Healing of Nasal Mucosa: an Experimental Animal Study(Sage Publications inc, 2023) Kulekci, Cagri; Ozer, Serdar; Onen, Selin; Korkusuz, Petek; Yilmaz, TanerObjective Aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of topical intranasal insulin on healing of nasal mucosa in a rat model. Methods Forty-eight Wistar rats, weighing between 250 and 300 g and aged 10-12 weeks were used and randomized into two equal groups. 1.9 mm curette was introduced through the left nostril and 1.9 mm mucosa from the left nasal septum was curetted. Postoperatively, animals in the control group received 1 mL of physiologic saline, 3 times a day in a nasal irrigation fashion. Animals in the experimental group received 1 mL of 5 IU/mL regular insulin in saline solution. Subjects were sacrificed after 5, 10, and 15 days and macroscopic and histomorphometric evaluations were performed. Results There were no mucosal synechiae and septal perforation macroscopically. Histological examination revealed that the defect size reduction was 21% in the saline group versus 56% in the insulin group on the fifth day (p = 0.006). There was 62% defect reduction in the saline group versus 79% in the insulin group on the 10th day (p = 0.034). On the 15th day, only 67% of saline group animals had complete defect closure, whereas 100% of animals treated with insulin had complete closure (92% vs 100% mucosal defect reduction, p = 0.036). Both edema and inflammation were less in the insulin group on 15th day (p = 0.006; p = 0.023, respectively). Conclusion The results from this study support the safety and efficacy of topical insulin on wound healing in the literature. It enables the fabrication of living cellular constructs with complex architectures that are suitable for various biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering, disease modeling, drug screening, and precision regenerative medicine. The ultimate goal of bioprinting is to produce stable, anatomically-shaped, human-scale functional organs or tissue substitutes that can be implanted. Although various bioprinting techniques have emerged to develop customized tissue-engineering substitutes over the past decade, several challenges remain in fabricating volumetric tissue constructs with complex shapes and sizes and translating the printed products into clinical practice. Thus, it is crucial to develop a successful strategy for translating research outputs into clinical practice to address the current organ and tissue crises and improve patients' quality of life. This review article discusses the challenges of the existing bioprinting processes in preparing clinically relevant tissue substitutes. It further reviews various strategies and technical feasibility to overcome the challenges that limit the fabrication of volumetric biological constructs and their translational implications. Additionally, the article highlights exciting technological advances in the 3D bioprinting of anatomically shaped tissue substitutes and suggests future research and development directions. Conversely, evolutionary and self-construal theorists suggest that gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in more egalitarian countries, reflecting the greater autonomy support and flexible self-construction processes present in these countries. Using data from 62 countries (N = 28,640), we examine binary gender gaps in agentic and communal self-views as a function of country-level objective gender equality (the Global Gender Gap Index) and subjective distributions of social power (the Power Distance Index). Findings show that in more egalitarian countries, gender gaps in agency are smaller and gender gaps in communality are larger. These patterns are driven primarily by cross-country differences in men's self-views and by the Power Distance Index (PDI) more robustly than the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI). We consider possible causes and implications of these findings.
