    Change of Frontal Sinus in Age of According To the International Frontal Sinus Anatomy Classification

    Background The radiological and surgical anatomy of the frontal sinus should be well-known in all age groups to successfully manage frontal sinus diseases and reduce the risk of complications in sinus surgery. Purpose To define frontal sinus and frontal cells according to the International Frontal Sinus Anatomy Classification (IFAC) criteria in pediatrics and adults. Material and Methods A total of 320 frontal recess regions of 160 individuals (80 pediatric, 80 adults) who underwent a computed tomography (CT) scan of the paranasal sinus (PNS) were included in the study. Agger nasi cells, supra agger cells, supra agger frontal cells, suprabullar cells, suprabullar frontal cells, supraorbital ethmoid cells, and frontal septal cells were evaluated in the CT analysis. Results The incidence rates of the investigated cells were determined to be 93.1%, 41.9%, 60.0%, 76.3%, 58.5%, 18.8%, and 0% in the pediatric group, respectively, and 86.3%, 35.0%, 44.4%, 54.4%, 46.9%, 19.4%, and 3.4% in the adult group, respectively. Considering the unilateral and bilateral incidence of the cells, agger nasi cells were highly observed bilaterally in both the pediatric group (89.87%) and the adult group (86.48%). Conclusion Our study results show that IFAC can be used as a guide to increase the chance of surgical treatment in the pediatric and adult groups and that the prevalence of frontal cells can be determined radiologically and contributes to the generation of estimations of the prevalence of frontal cells.

    Production and Characterization of Poly (lactic Acid)-Based Biocomposites Filled With Basalt Fiber and Flax Fiber Hybrid

    Poly (lactic acid) (PLA)-based biocomposites containing flax fiber (FF) and basalt fiber (BF) both separately and together were prepared by melt blending method at the total constant ratio of 30 wt%. Mechanical properties, thermo-mechanical characteristics, thermal stability, flow behaviors, water uptake, and morphology of composites were investigated by tensile, hardness and impact tests, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermal gravimetric analysis, melt flow index (MFI) test, water absorption, and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Mechanical test results show that tensile strength, elongation, elastic modulus, and impact strength are extended up to higher values with increase in BF content in hybrid composites. Conversely, the presence of FF displays a negative effect in which these values drop down drastically as the FF concentration increases. On the other hand, slightly higher hardness values are obtained by the addition of FF at higher loadings. DMA analysis reveals that BF inclusion leads glass transition temperature of PLA to one point higher, but hybrid and FF containing composites shift that temperature to lower values. Storage moduli of composites are enhanced with the increase in BF concentration and remarkable decreases are observed for FF-filled composites. Hybrid composites exhibit average MFI values between PLA/FF and PLA/BF composites.

    Macroporous Silicone Biomaterials With Modified Surface Chemistry: Production and Characterization

    Porous and bioactive silicone biomaterials were developed for soft and cartilage tissue repair. A protocol, using compression molding, salt extraction, and supercritical carbon dioxide treatments, was used to obtain disk-shaped materials with specific pore sizes and morphologies by changing the process conditions. Highly open/interconnected macroporous silicone matrices, with an average pore size of 250-300 mu m and porosities in the range of 60%-70%, were obtained by the extracting the NaCl particles. Subsequent treatment with supercritical carbon dioxide slightly decreased the average pore size but increased the porosity to 80%. The supercritical carbon dioxide treatment effectively removed the entrapped salt crystals from the silicone matrix that improved interconnectivity. The compression modulus decreased, while the compression strength was increased using this technique. The surfaces and pores of the silicone materials were modified by silanization to provide primary amine groups for cell attachment, proliferation, migration, and three-dimensional growth of model L929 fibroblast cells.

    Ongoing Discussion: Is Prophylactic Central Neck Dissection Necessary in Ct1a-B,2n0 Papillary Thyroid Cancer

    Objective: To analyze the central lymph node metastasis (CLNM) rates of patients who underwent prophylactic central lymph node dissection (pCLND) with total thyroidectomy for cT1-2N0 papillary thyroid cancer in our clinic, to evaluate the conditions associated with lymph node metastasis, and to examine the necessity of pCLND in these patient groups.Methods: This study includes a retrospective review of the medical data of patients who underwent bilateral/unilateral central lymph node dissection (CLND) (b/uCLND) with total thyroidectomy in our center between 2013 and 2021, whose fine needle aspiration biopsy result was reported as malignant, who were detected as cT1a-1b-2N0 on thyroid and neck ultrasonography.Results: Of the 251 patients included in the study, 63 (25%) had CLNM (49 (19.5%) ipsilateral and 14 (5.5%) had contralateral CLNM). Twenty-two (20.1%) of 109 patients with cT1a, 30 (28.3%) of 106 patients with cT1b, and 11 (30.5%) of 36 patients with cT2 had CLNM, and metastasis rates increased with increasing cT category. CLNM rates increased with increasing pT category (p=0.005). CLNM was present in 21 (38.8%) of 54 patients (21.5%) with collision tumors, and metastasis rates increased significantly compared to the presence of a single histopathologic tumor (p=0.006). CLNM rates were higher in patients with multicentric tumor localization than in those with unicentric localization (p=0.006).Conclusion: Multicentricity, bilaterality, capsule invasion, collision tumors and tumors larger than 1 cm increase the risk of CLNM. uCLND for tumors larger than 1 cm, bCLND for tumors larger than 2 cm can be considered. We believe that patients with unilateral CLNM also have an increased risk of contralateral metastasis.

    Cue-based aggregation with a mobile robot swarm: a novel fuzzy-based method

    Aggregation in swarm robotics is referred to as the gathering of spatially distributed robots into a single aggregate. Aggregation can be classified as cue-based or self-organized. In cue-based aggregation, there is a cue in the environment that points to the aggregation area, whereas in self-organized aggregation no cue is present. In this paper, we proposed a novel fuzzy-based method for cue-based aggregation based on the state-of-the-art BEECLUST algorithm. In particular, we proposed three different methods: naive, that uses a deterministic decision-making mechanism; vector-averaging, using a vectorial summation of all perceived inputs; and fuzzy, that uses a fuzzy logic controller. We used different experiment settings: one-source and two-source environments with static and dynamic conditions to compare all the methods. We observed that the fuzzy method outperformed all the other methods and it is the most robust method against noise.
