    A Fast Hough Transform Approximation and Its Application for Barcode Localization

    This paper addresses barcode localization in images acquired by wireles cameras. For this purpose, a fast Hough transform approximation by use of a sliding mask is developed. The approximation decomposes the lines at different orientations into distinct bitplanes. Barcode localization is achieved by considering the high density locations in the bitplanes via morphology and profiling. The time complexity of the proposed approximation is lower than the previously proposed fast Hough transform, though it achieves the equal performance in localization of barcodes.

    The Usability Study for the Personal Health Record Systems

    With the emergence of new technologies, there is an increasing number of studies to improve healthcare delivery quality and health services. The studies have shown that the focus should be on integrated, sharable and personalized healthcare solutions which requires usage of patient data as much as possible for fast and correct diagnosis and care. Hence, data related to people when they are healthy and when they are sick become very critical for which many projects have been initiated to increase awareness of people about the importance of data collection all over the world and in our country as well. This requires more active role of the citizens in tracking their healthcare data. In this study, Microsoft Health Vault system that is used for storage of personal health records, has been analyzed in terms of its usability characteristics and the results have been discussed.

    Design Considerations for Sub-Ghz Multilayer Microstrip Antenna for Near Ground Communication Links in Rural Areas

    This paper presents some preliminary results of design and development of sub-GHz multilayer microstip antenna for use in near ground communication applications. In design stage of the antenna, iterative approach was applied. Firstly, a two layer microstrip antenna design process is presented. Next, the corners of the patch were cut, and a vertical wall on all sides of the antenna were introduced. In this way, both the size and resonant freqeuncy can be tuned. Moreover, as an application specific requirement, it is intended to embed this antenna into a metal box in order to protect it from man-made and natural environmental effects. This was also studied, and effects of the embedding ground on the antenna characteristics were examined. It is shown that the designed antenna provides -27dB resturn loss, and 7.3dB peak gain at 915MHz with the dimension of 150x200x13mm. Some preliminary measurements have proven the simulations.

    Using learning style theory in remote laboratory applications

    Studies have shown that, while learning different concepts, people sometimes use different approaches. These different approaches define individual learning styles. Understanding learning style differences is thus an important step in improving performance of the individuals and educational institutions. In this study, a learning style assessment tool was used to examine the relationship between students' learning styles and their performance in engineering education programs of Atilim University. 329 students (55 female) participated in this study. At their first year in the program, students' learning styles are measured by a learning style assessment tool developed by David Kolb. The results show that, at the Atilim University's engineering education program, most of the students are having assimilator type of learning style (45%). Convergers (27%) and divergers (22%) follow the assimilators. The number of accommodators is very limited (5%). This information can be used to create adaptive teaching environments in distance education courses.

    A Segmentation Algorithm for Foreground/Background Extraction

    This paper describes a three-pass segmentation algorithm followed by a foreground/background extraction rule. Being imperfect, the basic objective of the proposed segmentation is to enable the extraction of objects that may be of main interest to the user, and the background. The formed segments are assigned points, according to the location of their center of mass and bounding box coordinates, and spatial dispersion. Each segment is labelled as foreground or background in compliance with the grade point they get.

    THE USE OF CUMULANTS FOR VOICED-UNVOICED SEGMENTS IDENTIFICATION IN SPEECH SIGNALS

    In this study, voiced-unvoiced classification performance of Turkish sounds using skewness and kurtosis is examined. The analyses show that higher order cumulants can be employed as a feature in voiced-unvoiced classification that is vital in speech processing applications. Furthermore, it has been shown that cumulants are also useful for identifying voiced and unvoiced segments in noisy speech signals.

    Bar Code Localization in Wavelet Domain by Using Binary Morphology

    In this paper, a wavelet transform based bar code localization algorithm is proposed. The algorithm is designed to enable fast and memory efficient application for automatic bar code recognition systems that are used in big manufacturing and distribution units. The region of interest areas are kept and other regions are discarded by applying binary morphology on wavelet transform coefficients.

    Swarm Aggregations Using Artificial Potentials and Sliding Mode Control

    In this article we build on our earlier results in [1, 2] on swarm stability. In [1, 2] we had considered aggregating swarm model in n-dimensional space based on artificial potential functions for inter-individual interactions and motion along the negative gradient of the combined potential. Here we consider a general model for vehicle dynamics of each agent (swarm member) and use sliding mode control theory to force their motion to obey the dynamics of the swarm considered in [1, 2]. In this context, the results in [1, 2] serve as a "proof of concept" for swarm aggregation, whereas the present results serve as possible implementation method for engineering swarms with given vehicle dynamics. Moreover, the presented control scheme is robust with respect to disturbances and system uncertainties.
