Using a coding scheme developed in previous research (Curtis and Lawson, 2001), the paper characterises communication behaviours of students engaged in a software development project. The paper reports the results of two pilot projects done with students in USA, England, Turkey and Panama. Through content analysis we identify distinct patterns of interactions and examine how these patterns are associated with task, culture, or performance. Our results suggest that communication patterns among global software learners may be related to task type, culture and levels of performance.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4The Effect of Post-Learning Arousal on Memory in Education(inderscience Enterprises Ltd, 2015) Ozcelik, ErolCognitive psychological and neurobiological studies have shown that presenting emotional events after learning enhances memory performance. It has been suggested that arousal induced by emotional stimuli modulates memory consolidation. However, little is known about the memory consolidation process in education. The goal of this study is to investigate the effect of post-learning arousal on memory consolidation in an applied educational setting. Participants were presented with either emotionally arousing or neutral pictures after they studied the instructional materials. Their memory for instructional materials was tested by an immediate free-recall test and a recognition test administered after one week. The results suggest that presenting emotionally arousing pictures compared to neutral pictures enhanced recognition memory performance. These findings support that emotional stimuli facilitated consolidation of memory traces. By incorporating theories in cognitive psychology and neurobiology and using them in an educational setting, this study proposes a novel way to enhance learning through emotional arousal.Article Citation - WoS: 20Citation - Scopus: 28Modelling and Optimisation of an 8 X 8 Heavy Duty Vehicle's Hydro-Pneumatic Suspension System(inderscience Enterprises Ltd, 2016) Kucuk, Kahraman; Yurt, Hunkar Kemal; Arikan, Kutluk Bilge; Mrek, HuseyinIn this paper, modelling of the hydro-pneumatic suspension (HPS) system of a heavy duty vehicle that has all-wheel steering and driving capability is studied. The prototype vehicle of concern is a mobile telescopic crane. The spring and damper effects of the HPS, which is used generally in heavy commercial vehicles and in military vehicles, have been modelled separately. First, HPS dynamics is studied on 1/8 vehicle model and then vehicle dynamics is examined on the MSC ADAMS/Car model. HPS of the prototype vehicle is assessed by some objective functions. In addition, simulation-based optimisation is performed using a 1/8 vehicle model. Various designs are obtained and their performances are compared with that of the prototype vehicle's HPS by the ADAMS/Car model simulations. Five different genetic encoding schemes, which incorporate various heuristic search techniques, are proposed to deal with the most critical constraints of the problem. The fitness criterion used by all genetic algorithms includes a merit function for minimising the size of the gearbox. Many organisations have turned to it in the quest for higher quality software delivered on time economically. GSD is facing a variety of challenges, including non-technical challenges such as cross-cultural management, communication, collaboration, coordination, distance and time, team dynamics, trust, etc. In this paper these significant non-technical issues are reviewed. It is found that non-technical areas such as team dynamics and cross-cultural risk management have received scant attention and need further studies. Implications drawn from the review will provide knowledge to facilitate further empirical studies in these areas.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1An examination of the relationship among conspicuous consumption, social media addiction, narcissism, and empathy: a research on university students(inderscience Enterprises Ltd, 2024) Akbulut, Ayse; Esiyok, Elif; Cigdemoglu, Ceyhan; Ozgen, OzlenThe purpose of this study is to reveal the relationship between conspicuous consumption behaviour, social media addiction, narcissistic characteristics, and empathy for university students. Using a cross-sectional survey design, with a non-random sampling strategy, a total of 1,215 participants completed the online survey. Data were analysed through the structural equation modelling technique using the AMOS statistical analysis package to discover the relationship among variables. Findings indicated that social media addiction has a moderately positive relationship with conspicuous consumption, a weak negative relationship with empathy, and a moderately positive relationship with narcissism. As a result, both empathy and narcissism have an impact on conspicuous consumption, and social media addiction affects empathy. This study contributes to the literature in terms of exploring the relationship between empathy and conspicuous consumption together for young consumers.
