    Real Time Infrared Image Enhancement;
    (2012) Akdeniz,N.; Tora,H.
    This study evaluates the implementation of Balanced Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (BCLAHE) for infrared images (IR) on an embedded platform. The aim was to achieve real time performance for the operator display target application. The system configured for this aim is a dual processor media application device OMAP3530, which consists of an ARM and a DSP processor. System is configured so that hardware sources are used efficiently and various performance improvement techniques are investigated. Performance analysis is done over IR images with different dynamic range. © 2012 IEEE.

    A Bayes decision model for RSS based location estimation
    (Ieee, 2007) Dincer, Zeynep; Oektem, Rwen; Aydin, Elif
    This work introduces a location estimation method based on Bayes Decision Theory using Radio Signal Strengths for indoor environment. Signal Strengths are observed through three transmitters at three distinct frequencies in UHF band, an active RFID tag and a modem connected to a computer. The test environment is 2100cmx720cm, which is divided into classed of square grids. For each class, a set of received signal strengths are measured and processed. Assuming that the class in which the RFID tag was located in the previous time of measurement is known, the next location (class) is estimated using Bayes Decision Theory. Proposed method is tested in a laboratory environment with obstacles. Results show that proposed method will be successful in location estimation where the estimation error stays within around 2m.

    Higher Order Statistical Analysis of Turkish Phones
    (Ieee, 2014) Tora, Hakan; Uslu, Baran
    In this study, histograms of Turkish phones were examined using higher order cumulants. As is known, phones constituting a language, are composed of letters as vowels and consonants. These letters can also be grouped as voiced and unvoiced phones. It is observed that unvoiced letters show a Gaussian-like distribution and result in small values of skewness and kurtosis. On the other hand, vowels and voiced consonants lead to a non-Gaussian distribution. Voiced and unvoiced phones are related with their skewness and kurtosis values. It is empirically shown that higher order cumulants are likely to be a feature in describing Turkish phones.

    The Usability Study for the Personal Health Record Systems
    (Ieee, 2015) Gokay, Gonca; Ercil, Yavuz; Tokdemir, Gul; Cagiltay, Nergiz; Aykac, Y. Evren
    With the emergence of new technologies, there is an increasing number of studies to improve healthcare delivery quality and health services. The studies have shown that the focus should be on integrated, sharable and personalized healthcare solutions which requires usage of patient data as much as possible for fast and correct diagnosis and care. Hence, data related to people when they are healthy and when they are sick become very critical for which many projects have been initiated to increase awareness of people about the importance of data collection all over the world and in our country as well. This requires more active role of the citizens in tracking their healthcare data. In this study, Microsoft Health Vault system that is used for storage of personal health records, has been analyzed in terms of its usability characteristics and the results have been discussed.

    THE USE OF CUMULANTS FOR VOICED-UNVOICED SEGMENTS IDENTIFICATION IN SPEECH SIGNALS
    (Ieee, 2014) Uslu, Baran; Tora, Hakan
    In this study, voiced-unvoiced classification performance of Turkish sounds using skewness and kurtosis is examined. The analyses show that higher order cumulants can be employed as a feature in voiced-unvoiced classification that is vital in speech processing applications. Furthermore, it has been shown that cumulants are also useful for identifying voiced and unvoiced segments in noisy speech signals.

    Bar Code Localization in Wavelet Domain by Using Binary Morphology
    (Ieee, 2004) Öktem, RE
    In this paper, a wavelet transform based bar code localization algorithm is proposed. The algorithm is designed to enable fast and memory efficient application for automatic bar code recognition systems that are used in big manufacturing and distribution units. The region of interest areas are kept and other regions are discarded by applying binary morphology on wavelet transform coefficients.

    Bar code localization by image processing;
    (2005) Öktem,R.; Çetin,A.E.
    This paper addresses the problem of bar code recognition by use of image processing. Bar codes are composed of parallel alternating dark-light stripes; hence they also appear as parallel lines connected at some orientation in a binary edge map. The proposed algorithms exploit that feature and use morphology and free angle thresholding for localization. Edge map is formed by Sobel operator and binary subband decomposition separately, and the two methods are compared in terms of time complexity and performance. Detailed discussion of test results are also presented. ©2005 IEEE.

    Producing Synthetic Speech From Turkish Text Via a Single Sound Synthesizer Ic;
    (2010) Tora,H.; Cengizler,Ç.
    In this study, new speech sounds were created for Turkish letters from the allophones listed in SpeakJet Magnevation complex sound synthesizer IC, which is intended for English, by selecting and paring the most similiar phonems. Consequently, Turkish Text to Speech synthesizer was implemented with minimum enviroment elements and no physical modification on IC. Paring based on SAMPA showed that all Turkish phonems can be obtained from English allophones with high compatibility. The text to speech and paring algorithm presented herein is developed to be embedded in a microcontroller and capable to vocalize a random Turkish text with SpeakJet IC.
