    A Standard Benchmarking Suite for Structural Optimization Algorithms: Iscso 2016-2022

    Benchmarking is an essential part of developing efficient structural optimization techniques. Despite the advent of numerous metaheuristic techniques for solving truss optimization problems, benchmarking new algorithms is often carried out using a selection of classic test examples which are indeed unchallenging for contemporary sophisticated optimization algorithms. Furthermore, the limited optimization results available in the literature on new test examples are usually not accurately comparable. This is typically due to the lack of infromation about the performance of the investigated algorithms and the inconsistencies between the studies in terms of adopted test examples for benchmarking, optimization problem formulation, maximum number of objective function evaluations and other similar issues. Accordingly, there exists a need for developing new standard test suites composed of easily reproducible challenging test examples with rigorous and comparable performance evaluation results of algorithms on these test suites. To this end, the present work aims to propose a new baseline for benchmarking structural optimization algorithms, using a set of challenging sizing and shape optimization problems of truss structures selected from the international student competition in structural optimization (ISCSO) instances. The most recent six structural optimization examples from the ISCSO are tackled using a representative metaheuristic structural optimization algorithm. The statistical results of all the optimization runs using the proposed benchmarking suite are provided to pave the way for more rigorous benchmarking of structural optimization algorithms.

    MO-ISCSO: A Challenging Benchmark Test Suite for Large-Scale Multi-Objective Structural Optimization

    Current studies on the development of multi-objective algorithms for optimization of truss structures mainly depend on small-scale classic benchmark instances. This paper highlights the importance of establishing standard large-scale multi-objective structural optimization benchmarking suites for accurate validation of the proposed algorithms. A new benchmark test suite, called MO-ISCSO, is proposed for large-scale multi-objective structural optimization, based on the most recent optimization problems of the international student competition in structural optimization (ISCSO). Owing to the very small feasibility ratios of the MO-ISCSO instances, the effect of presence of feasible designs in the initial population of NSGA-II, GDE3, and AR-MOEA multi-objective optimization algorithms is investigated using the proposed test suite. The obtained numerical results indicate that seeding the initial population with feasible solutions helps the foregoing algorithms maintain a better balance between convergence and diversity. The statistical results form a baseline for future studies on developing efficient multi-objective structural optimization techniques.

    Global Energy Preserving Model Reduction for Multi-Symplectic Pdes

    Many Hamiltonian systems can be recast in multi-symplectic form. We develop a reduced -order model (ROM) for multi-symplectic Hamiltonian partial differential equations (PDEs) that preserves the global energy. The full-order solutions are obtained by finite difference discretization in space and the global energy preserving average vector field (AVF) method. The ROM is constructed in the same way as the full-order model (FOM) applying proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) with the Galerkin projection. The reduced-order system has the same structure as the FOM, and preserves the discrete reduced global energy. Ap-plying the discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM), the reduced-order solutions are computed efficiently in the online stage. A priori error bound is derived for the DEIM ap-proximation to the nonlinear Hamiltonian. The accuracy and computational efficiency of the ROMs are demonstrated for the Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation, Zakharov-Kuznetzov (ZK) equation, and nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation in multi-symplectic form. Preser-vation of the reduced energies shows that the reduced-order solutions ensure the long-term stability of the solutions.(c) 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

    Factors Affecting Care Burden and Life Satisfaction Among Parents of Children With Type 1 Diabetes

    Aim: Parents in the caregiving role for children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are affected from many aspects including physically, psychologically, socially, financially and spiritually. The aim of this study was to determine the factors affecting the care burden and life satisfaction of parents caring for a child with T1D and to examine the relationship between them. Method: This research was completed with 293 parents of children with T1D aged 3 -18 years, attending the pediatric health and diseases clinics in two state hospitals located in [redacted for peer review] from May 2023 to September 2023. For collection of data, a survey form, the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) and Adult Life Satisfaction Scale (ALSS) were used. Analysis of data used percentages, means, one-way ANOVA (post -hoc Tukey test), independent samples t - test, regression and correlation tests. Statistical significance level was accepted as p < 0.05. Results: Parents had mean care burden scale scores of 56.30 +/- 12.4, with mean adult life satisfaction scale scores of 69.39 +/- 11.61. According to the regression analysis results, the ZBI scores were affected by the child's general health status after T1D diagnosis, impact on responsibilities after T1D diagnosis and diabetes management skills ( p < 0.05). ALSS scores were affected by the variables of caregiver assessment of health status before and after the child's T1D diagnosis, income level, impact on responsibilities after T1D diagnosis and diabetes management skills ( p < 0.05). There was a negative weak level of significant correlation identified between the ZBI and ALSS total scores ( r = -0.36; p < 0.05). Conclusion: General health status after receiving T1D diagnosis, impact on responsibilities after diabetes diagnosis and diabetes management skills are factors affecting the care burden and life satisfaction of parents. Additionally, a negative relationship was determined between parents' care burden and life satisfaction. Nurses should develop family -centered care plans and work to reduce factors increasing care burden while increasing life satisfaction. (c) 2024 Elsevier Inc.     Exploring the Intersection of Caregiving Burden, Parenting Stress, and Self-Efficacy in Caregivers of Children Born With Esophageal Atresia

    Aims: To examine the relationship between caregiving burden and parenting stress in caregivers of children with esophageal atresia and to identify factors associated with caregiving burden. Additionally, it explores whether self-efficacy mediates this correlation. Design: An analytical cross-sectional study. Methods: Data were collected from 139 caregivers using the Zarit Caregiving Burden Scale (ZCB), Coping Self-Efficacy Scale (CSE), and Parental Stress Scale (PS) between June and October 2023. Statistical analyses included structural equation modeling and logistic regression using IBM SPSS 28.0, SPSS Amos, and Jamovi software. Results: Among the participants, 68.3 % experienced a moderate-to-high caregiving burden. A statistically significant negative correlation was found between ZCB and CSE scores, while a moderate positive correlation was observed between ZCB and PS scores. Parenting stress was associated with caregiving burden; however, self-efficacy did not mediate this relationship. Conclusion: Caregivers, particularly mothers with high parental stress, a history of miscarriage, and a gestational age above 30 weeks, should be prioritized for interventions addressing caregiving burden. Implications for the profession: Assessing caregiving burden and stress in outpatient clinics is critical for effective home care management. Standardized discharge education and psychosocial support should be provided to caregivers to alleviate their burden. Impact: This study fills a research gap regarding caregivers of children with esophageal atresia and provides guidance for healthcare professionals, hospital administrators, and policymakers. Promoting community-based and personal care support services is essential for reducing caregiving burden and parental stress. Reporting method: This study adhered to the STARD guidelines.
