    Effects of Cerium Oxide on Kidney and Liver Tissue Damage in an Experimental Myocardial Ischemia-Reperfusion Model of Distant Organ Damage

    Background and Objectives: Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is a process in which impaired perfusion is restored by restoring blood flow and tissue recirculation. Nanomedicine uses cutting-edge technologies that emerge from interdisciplinary influences. In the literature, there are very few in vivo and in vitro studies on how cerium oxide (CeO2) affects systemic anti-inflammatory response and inflammation. Therefore, in our study, we aimed to investigate whether CeO2 administration has a protective effect against myocardial I/R injury in the liver and kidneys. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four rats were randomly divided into four groups after obtaining approval from an ethics committee. A control (group C), cerium oxide (group CO), IR (group IR), and Cerium oxide-IR (CO-IR group) groups were formed. Intraperitoneal CeO2 was administered at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg 30 min before left thoracotomy and left main coronary (LAD) ligation, and myocardial muscle ischemia was induced for 30 min. After LAD ligation was removed, reperfusion was performed for 120 min. All rats were euthanized using ketamine, and blood was collected. Liver and kidney tissue samples were evaluated histopathologically. Serum AST (aspartate aminotransferase), ALT (alanine aminotransaminase), GGT (gamma-glutamyl transferase), glucose, TOS (Total Oxidant Status), and TAS (Total Antioxidant Status) levels were also measured. Results: Necrotic cell and mononuclear cell infiltration in the liver parenchyma of rats in the IR group was observed to be significantly increased compared to the other groups. Hepatocyte degeneration was greater in the IR group compared to groups C and CO. Vascular vacuolization and hypertrophy, tubular degeneration, and necrosis were increased in the kidney tissue of the IR group compared to the other groups. Tubular dilatation was significantly higher in the IR group than in the C and CO groups. TOS was significantly higher in all groups than in the IR group (p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001, and p = 0.006, respectively). However, TAS level was lower in the IR group than in the other groups (p = 0.002, p = 0.020, and p = 0.031, respectively). Renal and liver histopathological findings decreased significantly in the CO-IR group compared to the IR group. A decrease in the TOS level and an increase in the TAS level were found compared to the IR group. The AST, ALT, GGT, and Glucose levels are shown. Conclusions: CeO2 administered before ischemia-reperfusion reduced oxidative stress and ameliorated IR-induced damage in distant organs. We suggest that CeO2 exerts protective effects in the myocardial IR model.

    The Effect of a Single Session Rubber Hand Illusion on Pressure Pain Is Not Long-Lasting

    Background: Rubber hand illusion (RHI) is an experience that causes changes in body perception and awareness as a result of the integration of simultaneous perceived visual and tactile stimuli. After synchronous brush strokes with rubber and real hands, the person perceives the rubber hand as their own. RHI is known to alter pain perception. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effects of RHI on pressure pain threshold and continuity of this effect. Methods: Twenty-three volunteers who developed RHI were included in our study and two conditions, illusion (synchronous) and control (asynchronous), were applied. The illusion condition was created by synchronous brush strokes, while the control condition was created by asynchronous brush application using different frequency and different finger areas in the same individuals. In both conditions, pressure pain threshold measurements with an algometer were performed at four times: baseline/1st measurement, during the brush stroke/2nd measurement, at the end of the brush stroke/3rd measurement and after the hand was removed from the environment/4th measurement. Results: It was shown that RHI increased the pressure-pain threshold (p = 0.004) in healthy volunteers. Asynchronous brush strokes arranged as a control trial significantly decreased the pressure pain threshold (p = 0.002). Conclusions: It was found that the threshold values that change during the brush strokes return to the initial state after the brush strokes are terminated and the rubber hand is removed from the environment so that the effect of the illusion does not last for a long time with a single session application. © 2025 European Pain Federation - EFIC ®.

    Investigation of the Effectiveness of Pcm on the Energy Saving, Thermal Comfort and Indoor Air Quality in Overcrowded Area

    Overcrowded areas like hospitals, jails, and shelter elevators pose a risk in terms of excessive temperatures, excessive CO2 concentrations, or even the presence of toxins and viruses. Hence, ventilation, thermal comfort and energy management are crucial issues for these kinds of places. In the present study, a prototype (1:4) of a prison quarry located in Baghdad, Iraq has been examined. Indoor air quality, humidity, temperature distribution and energy consumption of the room have been monitored for the identical weather conditions of the real prison cell, including five dummy occupants, each dissipating 100 W/m2 of heat, releasing CO2 of 0.3 l/min and water vapor. To reduce the cooling energy consumption of the building and the temperature deviation during the day, two layers of Phase Change Materials, PCMs, have been embedded in the ceiling of the prototype. Experiments have been recorded for three hours in Baghdad's harsh weather conditions in August. In addition, numerical analyses were conducted and compared with experimental findings, and a good match is obtained. Energy saving of 47.2% have been calculated by using PCM for the inlet air velocity of 0.5 m/s.

    Exploring the Role of Search Experience and Self-Efficacy in Cognitive Self-Esteem: a Latent Growth Modelling Approach

    In this study, we seek to contribute to a broader understanding of the processes and contexts that lead to inflated judgments of cognitive ability in human-computer partnerships. We conducted a within-subject experiment design study with 164 college students in order to explore the impact of the search experience on cognitive self-esteem (CSE). Our preliminary findings revealed that search experience is an important factor that influences individuals' perception of their abilities to answer questions. This influence was observed regardless of whether they have access to search tools or not. However, search experience does not explain the significant change in CSE that we found between "access" and "no access" (to search tools) conditions.

    Medical Device-Related Pressure Injuries: Knowledge Levels of Nurses and Factors Affecting These

    Aim: The knowledge level of nurses plays a key role in preventing medical device-related pressure injuries. This research aimed to investigate the knowledge levels of nurses with regard to medical device-related pressure injuries and the factors affecting these. Materials and methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 355 nurses between December 15, 2020 and March 31, 2021. Data were collected using the Nurse Information Form and the Medical Device-Related Pressure Injuries Knowledge Questionnaire. Results: The mean score of the nurses for the Medical Device-Related Pressure Injuries Knowledge Questionnaire was 22.11 +/- 5.79. The nurses obtained the highest score from the "Description" sub-dimension of the test, whereas the lowest scores pertained to the "Staging" sub-dimension. Only 23.1% of the nurses stated that they had general knowledge about medical device-related pressure injuries. A significant difference was determined between the mean scores that the nurses got from the Medical Device-Related Pressure Injuries Knowledge Questionnaire and their gender, work experience in the intensive care unit, frequency of encountering a medical device-related pressure injuries and their previous training on such injuries. In addition, a positive relationship was determined between the level of knowledge about medical device-related pressure injuries and age and seniority. Results: It was concluded that the level of knowledge of nurses about medical device-related pressure injuries was insufficient. We therefore recommend that a regular training program be provided to nurses on medical device-related pressure injuries in order to reduce the incidence of these injuries and to provide a quality and safe care service to patients.

    Legalizing Anti-Gender Ideology and Civil Society Resistance in Turkey

    This study investigates how feminist, LGBTQI+, labour, and human rights organisations in Turkey frame and negotiate the legal institutionalisation of anti-gender ideology and how these processes generate strategic yet fragile cross-movement alliances. Drawing on Benford and Snow's framing theory and Yuval-Davis's transversal politics, the analysis is based on semi-structured interviews conducted with activists from ten organisations between April and June 2025 and organisational documents. The study conceptualises anti-gender politics in Turkey not as a societal backlash but as a state-driven, multi-layered project of "masculinist entrenchment (Yetis, & Ozd & uuml;zen, 2024)" that restructures legal, ideological, and affective arenas. The findings demonstrate that activists increasingly reframe anti-gender assaults as systemic attacks on democracy, rights, and equality, producing a shift from issue-based coordination to what this article terms "strategic coexistence", a hybrid alliance formed across previously distant ideological and organisational positions. Diagnostic framing identifies anti-gender reforms as an existential threat, prognostic framing centres on alliance-building, movement memory, and inclusive organisational practices and motivational framing foregrounds shared destiny, solidarity, and the symbolic significance of LGBTQI+ rights. The analysis reveals that while this recontextualisation widens the basis for coalition, the resulting alliance remains structurally unbalanced and fragile. Hierarchical power relations, uneven exposure to political risk, and selective silence, particularly regarding LGBTQI+ concerns, limit the depth and durability of alliances. In this context, LGBTQI+ rights serve both as a catalyst for broad-based mobilisation and as a litmus test for democratic commitment, disclosing the limitations of transversal solidarity under authoritarian regimes.

    Calcium Carbonate/Polydopamine Composite Nanoplatform Based on Tgf-Β Blockade for Comfortable Cancer Immunotherapy

    Cancer pain seriously reduces the quality of life of cancer patients. However, most research about cancer focuses solely on inhibiting tumor growth, neglecting the issue of cancer pain. Therefore, the development of therapeutic agents with both tumor suppression and cancer pain relief is crucial to achieve human-centered treatment. Here, the work reports curcumin (CUR) and ropivacaine (Ropi) coincorporating CaCO3/PDA nanoparticles (CaPNMCUR+Ropi) that realized efficient tumor immunotherapy and cancer pain suppression. The therapeutic efficiency and mechanism are revealed in vitro and in vivo. The results indicate that CaPNMCUR+Ropi underwent tumor microenvironment-responsive degradation and realized rapid release of calcium ions, Ropi, and CUR. The excessive intracellular calcium triggered the apoptosis of tumor cells, and the transient pain caused by the tumor injection was relieved by Ropi. Simultaneously, CUR reduced the levels of immunosuppressive factor (TGF-beta) and inflammatory factor (IL-6, IL-1 beta, and TNF-alpha) in the tumor microenvironment, thereby continuously augmenting the immune response and alleviating inflammatory pain of cancer animals. Meanwhile, the decrease of TGF-beta leads to the reduction of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) expression, thereby alleviating hyperalgesia and achieving long-lasting analgesic effects. The design of the nanosystem provides a novel idea for human-centered tumor treatment in the future.

    Latest Developments in Engineered Skeletal Muscle Tissues for Drug Discovery and Development

    IntroductionWith the advances in skeletal muscle tissue engineering, new platforms have arisen with important applications in biology studies, disease modeling, and drug testing. Current developments highlight the quest for engineering skeletal muscle tissues with higher complexity . These new human skeletal muscle tissue models will be powerful tools for drug discovery and development and disease modeling.Areas coveredThe authors review the latest advances in in vitro models of engineered skeletal muscle tissues used for testing drugs with a focus on the use of four main cell culture techniques: Cell cultures in well plates, in microfluidics, in organoids, and in bioprinted constructs. Additional information is provided on the satellite cell niche.Expert opinionIn recent years, more sophisticated in vitro models of skeletal muscle tissues have been fabricated. Important developments have been made in stem cell research and in the engineering of human skeletal muscle tissue. Some platforms have already started to be used for drug testing, notably those based on the parameters of hypertrophy/atrophy and the contractibility of myotubes. More developments are expected through the use of multicellular types and multi-materials as matrices . The validation and use of these models in drug testing should now increase.

    Optimal Design and Technoeconomic Analysis of On-Site Hydrogen Refueling Station Powered by Wind and Solar Photovoltaic Hybrid Energy Systems

    In this study, a grid-connected on-site hydrogen filling station (HRS) integrated with renewable energy systems is designed and examined for different daily hydrogen refueling capacities. The installation location of the HRS is selected in Izmir (Turkey) and daily solar radiation and wind speed data are used in the calculations. The HRS station was integrated with a hybrid energy system using photovoltaic panels (PV), wind turbine (WT) and PV/ WT and five different daily refueling scenarios were investigated. A techno-economic analysis is conducted for the designed HRS system, considering the initial investment capital, installation and operating costs. The levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) is evaluated according to different refueling capacity scenarios, periods of operation and renewable energy installation capacities. The lowest LCOH is obtained as 4.5 /kg H2 in the PVintegrated HRS system for a 20-year investment scenario. The results prove the suitability of the HRS system for integrating renewable energy in the identified region. It is recommended to integrate analytical models for the system components to increase the reliability of the design and optimization process in future planned studies.
