A Light Bulb in Every House the Istanbul General Electric Factory and American Technology Transfer To Turkey
(Johns Hopkins Univ Press, 2022) Tunc, Tanfer Emin; Tunc, Gokhan
In 1946, Turkish entrepreneur Vehbi Koc signed an agreement with the U.S. firm General Electric to build and operate its first light bulb factory in the Near/Middle East, in Istanbul. This private joint venture introduced new manufacturing techniques, business practices, and consumer habits to Turkey, opening channels of postwar technological exchange. Closer examination of the GE-Koc partnership reveals that during the early Cold War, the transfer and embedding of American technologies in Turkey was a politically complicated process of innovation that required constant adaptation. Fraught with unforeseeable obstacles, it also required cautious negotiation with multiple transnational actors. The story of the GE-Koc partnership thus adds a new dimension to historical understandings of the Turkish Cold War experience and the Americanization of the region. It illustrates how transferring a nonmilitary, soft-power, domestic technologythe light bulb-played a significant role in Turkish-American relations and therefore contributes to studies of U.S. Cold War diplomacy through transnational investment in innovation.

The Use of Semi-Public Spaces as Urban Space and Evaluation in Terms of Urban Space Quality
    (Springer Nature, 2022) Orhan,M.
The rapid physical change and increase in density of today’s cities lead to changes in urban space usage and habits in urban life. This change negatively affects the description and use of public spaces as socialisation spaces, which are one of the most significant urban components. As a result, city dwellers satisfy their need for public spaces with the use of different urban spaces. Urban life shifts from urban public spaces to semi-public spaces. Semi-public spaces are qualified and accessible spaces that ensure transition between private spaces (buildings) and public spaces. These spaces gain different attributes according to the characteristics (commerce, housing, tourism, etc.) of the urban spaces they coexist within and to the functions and designs of the structures surrounding them. These attributes determine their configuration as integrated or dissociated with the city and thus specify their relationship with the city. This relationship changes ‘city–space–structure–human’ interaction, and this change affects urban quality with the spatial quality of semi-public spaces. The aim of this study is to present how and related to which characteristics the use of semi-public spaces as urban spaces has changed, to detect the effects of this change on the urban environment and to establish the role of semi-public spaces in terms of urban quality. In conclusion, semi-public spaces with different characteristics located in different urban spaces will be examined as regards physical, schematic, functional characteristics and use within the scope of this study. In accordance with the data obtained by comparative analysis method, approaches to facilitate their use as urban spaces and to ensure their integration with the city will be introduced. Accordingly, criteria that semi-public spaces should possess in order to increase and sustain urban space quality will be determined. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

(Aves, 2022) Kazancıoğlu, Rümeyza; Ozturk, Savas; Turgutalp, Kenan; Gürsu, Meltem; Arıcı, Mustafa; Oruç, Ayşegül; Ateş, Kenan
Objectives: There is limited data about coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) characteristics and results in peritoneal dialysis \r(PD) patients. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics and outcomes among PD patients and compare them with \rmatched hemodialysis (HD) patients and a control group without kidney disease.\rMethods: We included 18 PD patients and consecutive age- and gender-matched 18 HD and 18 patients without kidney \rdisease (control group) registered into the Turkish Society of Nephrology database including 1301 COVID-19 patients. We \rcompared demographic, clinical, radiological, laboratory data, and outcomes namely intensive care unit (ICU) admission, \rmechanical ventilation, mortality, and composite outcome (death and/or ICU admission).\rResults: ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, and mortality rates in PD patients (27.8%, 22.2%, and 22.2%, respectively) \rand the HD group (16.7%, 11.1%, and 16.7%, respectively) were higher than the control group (11.1%, 11.1%, and 5.6%, \rrespectively), but intergroup comparison did not reveal difference. A total of 11 (20.3%) patients had composite outcome \r(6 PD patients, 3 HD patients, and 2 patients in the control group). In Cox regression analysis, higher age and higher CRP level were related to increased risk of composite outcome. Adjusted rate of composite outcome in PD group was significantly higher than \rthe control group (P = .050). This rate was similar in HD and control groups (P = .30).\rConclusions: Combined in-hospital mortality and/or ICU admission of PD patients with COVID-19 was significantly higher than the control \rpatients. There is a need for careful surveillance of PD patients for infection signs and prompt treatment of COVID-19.

Semptomatik Çok Ciddi Aort Darlıklı Hastalarda Transkateter Aort Kapak İmplantasyonun Etkisi
(Kare Publ, 2021) Karaduman, Bilge Duran; Ayhan, Hüseyin; Keles, Telat; Bozkurt, Engin

Cannabinoid Receptor Ligands Modulate Fibrosis and Inflammation in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: a Preliminary Study
(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2024) Kose, Sevil; Onen, Selin; Gizer, Merve; Boduroglu, Esin; Gonullu, Ugur; Korkusuz, Petek
Background/aim: No specific pharmacological treatment regimen for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) exists. Therefore, new antiinflammatory therapeutic strategies are needed. Cannabinoids (CBs), known for their inflammation-modulating and antifibrotic effects, may be potential medication candidates for treating IPF. We aim to evaluate the inflammation-modulating and antifibrotic effects of CB receptor (CBR) agonists and antagonists in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated normal human lung fibroblast, epithelial cells, IPF fibroblast cells, and monocytes. Materials and methods: We detected CBRs in normal human lung fibroblasts (LL24) and IPF fibroblast cells (LL29), epithelial cells (A549) and monocytes (THP-1) by flow cytometry. We determined TGF-(31, IL-8, and TNF-alpha inflammatory cytokines in the LL24, LL29, A549, and THP-1 cell culture supernatants on days 1 and 5 by ELISA. We evaluated the cell viability in LL24, LL29, and A549 cells on days 1, 3, and 5 spectrophotometrically and detected collagen Type I (ColI) production in the LL24 and LL29 cell culture supernatants on days 1, 3, and 5 by ELISA. Results: LL24, LL29, A549, and THP-1 cells exhibited CB1 (CB1R) and CB2 (CB2R) receptors. CB1R and CB2R agonists WIN55,2122 and JWH015 inhibited fibroblastic and epithelial cell proliferation on day 5. TGF-(31 and TNF-alpha release increased, while IL-8 release decreased in LL24, LL29, A549, and THP-1 cells in response to the administration of WIN55,212-2 and JWH015 at a 10-2 mM concentration. CB1R and CB2R antagonists AM251 and AM630 did not block agonistic responses, suggesting a nonclassical CBRmediated pathway. CB2R agonist JWH015 decreased ColI expression in IPF lung fibroblasts LL29 on day 3. Conclusion: These results suggest that CB signaling regulates the progression of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis via CBR activation. This may offer a potential pharmacological tool for developing antifibrosis therapies.

A Practical Distributed Lightweight Multi-Hop Time Synchronization Algorithm for Linear Wireless Sensor Networks Implemented on a Pic Based System With Realistic Experimental Analysis
(Sakarya University, 2020) Erpay, A.; Al Imran, M.A.; Kara, A.
Time synchronization is fundamental in the distributed networked systems, especially in Wireless Sensor Networks where a global time is essential to make sense of the events like collection of data and scheduled sleep/wake-up of nodes. There exists numerous time synchronization algorithms and techniques in the literature. Nonetheless, these proposed methods lack realistic experimentation of the synchronization process which is vital from the realization point of view. This study aims to bridge that gap by presenting a distributed lightweight time synchronization protocol implemented on an inexpensive PIC platform. Furthermore, PIC-based systems hadn’t been investigated before and gives an idea of the simplicity of the algorithm. Experimental analysis was done to see the performance of the protocol. The core motivation of the experiments was to the study the impact of the environment (e.g. indoor, outdoors, temperature variations and interference) on the synchronization. Our findings show that temperature indeed impedes the synchronization accuracy. © 2020, Sakarya University. All rights reserved.

Software Change Size Measurement: an Exploratory Systematic Mapping Study
    (CEUR-WS, 2024) Hacaloglu, T.; Küçükateş Ömüral, N.; Kılınç Soylu, G.; Demirörs, O.
Change in software projects can occur through various channels. Customers may request modifications or new features; appraisal activities such as reviews or testing may uncover issues that necessitate adjustments, or products may need to adapt to changes in their operating environment. Therefore, it is essential to assess these changes explicitly and objectively within the scope of software engineering activities. Specifically, quantifying change by measuring its size is crucial for successful management, as without a meaningful metric, it is impossible to accurately assess its impact on the project's effort, schedule, and cost. This study aims to explore the concept of change in software engineering literature, with a particular emphasis on the methods used to measure its size. The study reveals that the current literature on this topic is still in its early stages and the measurement and estimation of changes remain challenging throughout both development and maintenance phases. According to the reviewed articles, size is primarily used for effort estimation. Various software artifacts from different stages of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) serve as input for change measurement, highlighting the need for a versatile size measurement applicable across all SDLC phases. Most of the reviewed articles interpret change in the context of maintenance activities. This research sets a benchmark for the status of software size measures for software change and highlights related problems to suggest further research topics. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

A Multi Source Graph-Based Hybrid Recommendation Algorithm
    (Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2021) Kurt,Z.; Gerek,Ö.N.; Bilge,A.; Özkan,K.
Images that widely exist on e-commerce sites, social networks, and many other applications are one of the most important information resources integrated into the recently deployed image-based recommender systems. In the latest studies, researchers have jointly considered ratings and images to generate recommendations, many of which are still restricted to limited information sources, sources namely, ratings with another input data, or which require the pre-existence of domain knowledge to generate recommendations. In this paper, a new graph-based hybrid framework is introduced to generate recommendations and overcome these challenges. Firstly, a simple overview of the framework is provided and, then, two different information sources (visual images and numerical ratings) are utilized to describe how the proposed framework can be developed in practice. Furthermore, the users’ visual preferences are determined based on which item they have already purchased. Then, each user is represented as a visual feature vector. Finally, the similarity factors between the users or items are evaluated from the user visual-feature or item visual-feature matrices, to be included the proposed algorithm for more efficiency. The proposed hybrid recommendation method depends on a link prediction approach and reveals the significant potential for performance improvement in top-N recommendation tasks. The experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed appraoch using three quality measurements - hit-ratio, recall, and precision - on the three subsets of the Amazon dataset, as well as its flexibility to incorporate different information sources. Finally, it is concluded that hybrid recommendation algorithms that use the integration of multiple types of input data perform better than previous recommendation algorithms that only utilize one type of input data. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
