Numerical Modeling of Hydrogen Diffusion in Metals Accounting for Large Deformations
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2015) Aslan, Ozgur
While the deleterious effects of hydrogen on metals and alloys are well known, the precise role of hydrogen in the underlying microscopic mechanisms is still not well understood and as of yet, the modeling attempts on hydrogen embrittlement and hydrogen induced cracking have not led to a proper method for life-time prediction. This work aims at the development of a robust numerical strategy in order to solve the non-linear coupled problem presented in the work of Anand [1]. The numerical implementation is performed for finite element method and the analysis are done to address the issue of hydrogen transport and hydrogen-embrittlement-related failures in metals. Specifically, problems related to the mechanism of hydrogen enhanced localized plasticity (HELP) is studied and macroscale shear localization phenomenon resulting from hydrogen induced material softening is considered at the phenomenological level. Polybenzimidazole Based Nanocomposite Membranes With Enhanced Proton Conductivity for High Temperature Pem Fuel Cells
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2017) Ozdemir, Yagmur; Uregen, Nurhan; Devrim, Yilser
In this study, phosphoric acid doped PBI nanocomposite membranes were prepared by dispersion of various amounts of inorganic nanoparticles in PBI polymer followed by phosphoric acid (H3PO4) doping for high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC). All of the PBI composite membranes were cast from the same FBI polymer with the same molecular weight. Titanium dioxide (TiO2), silicon dioxide (SiO2) and inorganic proton conductor zirconium phosphate (ZrP) were used as inorganic fillers. The PBI based composite membranes were characterized in terms of their acid uptake and acid leaching properties, mechanical properties, chemical stabilities in N-N Dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and impedance analyses. Thermal gravimetric analysis confirmed the improved thermal stability of the PBI composite membranes. The existence of inorganic fillers was improved the acid retention capability. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) showed that the introduction of 5 wt. % SiO2 or 5 wt. % ZrP helps to increase proton conductivity. The composite membrane with TiO2 retained low conductivity values than pristine PBI and this is a result of its non-uniform membrane structure. The highest proton conductivity of 0.200 S/cm was obtained for PBI/ZrP composite membrane with the highest value of H3PO4 doping level. Nyquist plots are drawn for all the membranes at different temperatures and the plots showed good fit with Randel's circuit. As a result the experimental results suggested that the PBI based composite membranes may be a promising electrolyte used in HT-PEMFC. (C) 2016 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Fabrication and Characterization of Cross-Linked Polybenzimidazole Based Membranes for High Temperature Pem Fuel Cells
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2017) Ozdemir, Yagmur; Ozkan, Necati; Devrim, Yilser
In this study different types of crosslinked polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes were compared as high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC). Cross-linking of PBI was performed with different cross-linkers including bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE), ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE), alpha-alpha'-dibromo-p-xylene (DBpX), and terephthalaldehyde (TPA). The crosslinked membranes have been characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, acid uptake and impedance analyses. The crosslinking of the PBI polymer matrix helps to improve the acid retention properties. PBI/BADGE presented the highest acid retention properties. Proton conductivities of the membranes were comparable to that of commercial membranes. Conductivity values up to 0.151 S.cm(-1) were obtained at 180 degrees C with PBI/DBpX membranes. Gas diffusion electrodes (GDE) were fabricated by an ultrasonic coating technique with 0.6 mg Pt.cm(-2) catalyst loading for both anode and cathode. The crosslinked membranes were tested in a single HT-PEMFC with a 5 cm(2) active area at 165 degrees C without humidification. PBI/BADGE crosslinked membranes demonstrated stability and high performance on single cell HT-PEMFC tests. The maximum power density for PBI/BADGE was determined as 0.123 W. cm(-2). As a result, the experimental results suggested that the PBI/ BADGE and PBI/DBpX cross-linked membranes are promising electrolyte options for HT-PEMFC. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Investigations on Microstructural Changes in Machining of Inconel 100 Alloy Using Face Turning Experiments and 3d Finite Element Simulations
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2016) Arisoy, Yigit M.; Guo, Changsheng; Kaftanoglu, Bilgin; Oezel, Tugrul; Ozel, Tugrul; Kaftanoʇlu, Bilgin
Nickel-base IN100 alloy is a choice of material for components requiring high strength at elevated temperatures. Machining processes applied to these components affect the microstructure, grain size, and microhardness of the finished surface. This research investigates the effects of tool micro-geometry, coating, and cutting speed on the microstructural changes during machining. 3D customized finite element simulations have been performed to predict the average grain size by implementing modified temperature dependent flow softening based material and Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov crystallization models. Simulation predictions on the average grain sizes, phase fractions, and resultant microhardness are compared against experimental measurements revealing good agreements. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. A New Processable and Fluorescent Polydithienylpyrrole Electrochrome With Pyrene Appendages
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2013) Tirkes, Seha; Mersini, Jetmire; Oztas, Zahide; Algi, Melek Pamuk; Algi, Fatih; Cihaner, Atilla
A new hybrid compound, namely 1-(pyren-3-yl)-2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole (SNS-P), was polymerized via both chemical and electrochemical methods. Chemically obtained soluble polydithienylpyrrole (c-PSNS-P) bearing pyrene appendages is a homogeneous and uniform polymer with a number averaged molecular weight of 15,200 g/mol. The polymer exhibits both multi-electrochromic and fluorescent properties. Upon oxidation, the color of electrochemically obtained polymer (e-PSNS-P) changes from yellowish orange to greenish yellow and to green/blue and finally to blue. In addition, the polymer induces yellowish orange (564 nm) and bright orange emission (613 nm) in solution and solid states, respectively. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Multisymplectic Integration of n-coupled Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation With Destabilized Periodic Wave Solutions
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2009) Aydin, Ayhan
N-coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation (N-CNLS) is shown to be in multisymplectic form. 3-CNLS equation is studied for analytical and numerical purposes. A new six-point scheme which is equivalent to the multisymplectic Preissman scheme is derived for 3-CNLS equation. A new periodic wave solution is obtained and its stability analysis is discussed. 3-CNLS equation is integrated for destabilized periodic solutions both for integrable and non-integrable cases by multisymplectic six-point scheme. Different kinds of evolutions are observed for different parameters and coefficients of the system. Numerical results show that, the multisymplectic six-point scheme has excellent local and global conservation properties in long-time computation. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fixed Point Theory for Cyclic Weak Φ-Contraction
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2011) Karapinar, Erdal; Karapınar, Erdal; Karapınar, Erdal; Mathematics; Mathematics
In this manuscript, the notion of cyclic weak phi-contraction is considered. It is shown that a self-mapping T on a complete metric space X has a fixed point if it satisfied cyclic weak phi-contraction. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2012) Karapinar, Erdal; Nguyen Van Luong; Luong, Nguyen Van; Karapnar, Erdal
The notion of coupled fixed point is introduced by Gnana-Bhaskar and Lakshmikantham. Very recently, the concept of tripled fixed point was introduced by Berinde and Borcut. In this manuscript, a quadruple fixed point is considered and some new related fixed point theorems are obtained. We also give some examples to illustrate our results. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. (Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2009) Ozbekler, A.; Zafer, A.
In this paper, we derive new interval oscillation criteria for a forced super-half-linear impulsive differential equation having fixed moments of impulse actions. The results are extended to a more general class of nonlinear impulsive differential equations. Examples are also given to illustrate the relevance of the results. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Characterization and Fuel Cell Performance of Divinylbenzene Crosslinked Phosphoric Acid Doped Membranes Based on 4-Vinylpyridine Grafting Onto Poly(ethylene-Co Films
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2018) Guler, Enver; Sadeghi, Sahl; Gursel, Selmiye Alkan; Alkan Gürsel, Selmiye
The effect of divinylbenzene (DVB) as crosslinker on the graft polymerization of 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) from poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE) films was studied. The resulted films were doped with phosphoric acid (PA) and characterized for mechanical, surface, thermal properties, and fuel cell performance. The crosslinked membrane obtained from grafting a mixture of 4VP with 1% DVB improved the polymerization kinetics and resulted in about 50% graft level depending on graft conditions. The crosslinked membranes were also found to have better mechanical properties compared to its non-crosslinked counterpart. The resulted membrane exhibited proton conductivity as high as 75 mS/cm under 50% relative humidity (RH) at 120 degrees C, besides almost doubling the power output of fuel cell compared to a non-crosslinked membrane. To the best of our knowledge, DVB crosslinked 4VP based ETFE membranes were, for the first time, tested in practical fuel cell test station correlating their performance to operating temperature. Furthermore, surface properties of produced membranes were additionally correlated to the degree of crosslinking. Humidity dependence is less pronounced in the produced membranes resulting in strong potential for testing at intermediate temperature (80-120 degrees C) polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells.
