    Component Importance in Coherent Systems With Exchangeable Components

    This paper is concerned with the Birnbaum importance measure of a component in a binary coherent system. A representation for the Birnbaum importance of a component is obtained when the system consists of exchangeable dependent components. The results are closely related to the concept of the signature of a coherent system. Some examples are presented to illustrate the results.

    Low Carbon Architectural Design

    Tendency towards sustainable energy resources is increasing and leading engineers and architects make joint efforts. Renewable energy potential present in nature can be used more efficiently so that while energy consumption is reducing, rate of energy gain, on the other hand, increases by architectural design methods. A sailing club in Golbasi, Ankara is designed as a low carbon building for optimum usage of solar and wind energy. It can be concluded using an energy efficient architectural design for a building before its construction makes it possible to meet the electrical and heat energy requirements at minimum cost and environmental friendly.

    Multipath Exploitation in Emitter Localization for Irregular Terrains

    Electronic Support Measures (ESM) systems have many operational challenges while locating radar emitter's position around irregular terrains such as islands due to multipath scattering. To overcome these challenges, this paper addresses exploiting multipath scattering in passive localization of radar emitters around irregular terrains. The idea is based on the use of multipath scattered signals as virtual sensor through Geographical Information System (GIS). In this way, it is presented that single receiver (ESM receiver) passive localization can be achieved for radar emitters. The study is initiated with estimating candidate multipath scattering centers over irregular terrain. To do this, ESM receivers' Angle of Arrival (AOA) and Time of Arrival (TOA) information are required for directly received radar pulses along with multipath scattered pulses. The problem then turns out to be multiple-sensor localization problem for which Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA)-based techniques can easily be applied. However, there is high degree of uncertainty in location of candidate multipath scattering centers as the multipath scattering involves diffuse components over irregular terrain. Apparently, this causes large localization errors in TDOA. To reduce this error, a reliability based weighting method is proposed. Simulation results regarding with a simplified 3D model are also presented. © 2019 RADIOENGINEERING.

    Fixed Point Results for Various Α-Admissible Contractive Mappings on Metric-Like Spaces

    We establish some fixed point theorems for alpha-admissible mappings in the context of metric-like space via various auxiliary functions. In particular, we prove the existence of a fixed point of the generalized Meir-Keeler type alpha-phi-contractive self-mapping.. defined on a metric- like space X. The given results generalize, improve, and unify several fixed point theorems for the generalized cyclic contractive mappings that have appeared recently in the literature.

    A Study on the Key Soft Skills for Successful Participation of Students in Multinational Engineering Education

    Soft-skills have proved to be a necessary complement to technical skills in today's multinational workplaces. As universities are facing the challenge of promoting internationalization and mobility in students and teachers, they have to decide how to help their students in developing these skills as well as increase their awareness on the cultural differences in multinational settings. After a long trajectory of participation in multinational educational experiences, the authors launched a survey to check if their previous findings on the preferred soft skills by educational experts and managers still remain valid after 5 years. Another goal of the study was the analysis of the link between preference for specific soft skills and cultural background in each country as characterized by Hofstede's indicators. The data collected from 123 experts from 45 different countries have confirmed the existence of a stable core set of preferred soft skills at global level and also for European countries. Results have also shown links between specific cultural indicators and preference for some soft skills.

    Maintaining Software Through Bit-Parallelism and Hashing the Parameterized q-grams

    In the software maintenance, it is often required to find duplicity present in the codes. Two code fragments are equivalent, if one can be transformed into the other via consistent renaming of identifiers, literals and variables. This equivalency can be detected by parameterized string matching. In this matching, a given pattern is said to match with a substring of the text, if there exists a one-to-one correspondence between symbols of and symbols of. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm for this problem by using both the overlapping and non-overlapping q-gram. We show the effect of running time of the algorithm on increasing the duplicity present in the code.

    Synthesis, X-Ray Data, and Hall Effect Measurements of Li-Doped Tl-Ba Superconductor

    Lithium-doped Tl-based superconductor was prepared by adding an amount of 0.3 mol.% to the Tl1.8Ba2Ca2.2Cu3Ox compound. The usual solid-state reaction method has been applied under optimum conditions. The x-ray data of the sample show a tetragonal structure with a high ratio of Tl-2223 superconducting phase. The sample showed a transition at 125 K and the zero resistance was observed at 117 K. Longitudinal (transport) and transverse (Hall) resistivities were measured at different temperatures under different magnetic fields and the data were interpreted. A positive Hall coefficient was observed at normal state and a sign reversal appears at temperatures lower than the critical temperature. (C) 2003 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

    Assessing Team Work in Engineering Projects

    Team work is considered a valuable teaching technique in higher education. However, the assessment of an individual's work in teams has proved to be a challenging task. Consequently, self-and peer-evaluations are becoming increasingly popular for the assessment of individuals in a team work, though it is essential to determine whether students can judge their own as well as their peer's performance effectively. Self-and peer-evaluations have been applied in different disciplines and their authenticity with regard to teacher's assessment has been evaluated in the literature but this issue has not been investigated in the field of engineering education so far. In this study, a peer-and self-assessment procedure is applied to the evaluation of a project work conducted in teams of 3 or 4 students. The participants were engineering students taking two similar courses related with database design and development. It is found that a majority of the students were unable to assess themselves as objectively as their instructor. Further, it is observed that successful students tend to under-estimate, whereas unsuccessful students tend to over-estimate, their own performance. The paper also establishes that the results of self-assessments are independent from the gender factor.

    Structural, optical, electrical and dielectric properties of Bi1.5Zn0.92Nb1.5-xNixO6.92-3x/2 solid solution

    The effects of Ni content on the structural, optical, dielectric and electrical properties of Bi1.5Zn0.92Nb1.5O6.92 pyrochlore ceramics have been investigated. Nickel atoms were inserted into pure samples in accordance to the composition Bi1.5Zn0.92Nb1.5-xNixO6.92-3x/2, with x varying from 0.07 to 0.40. The structural analysis revealed that a single phase of the pyrochlore compound can be obtained for x values of 0.07 and 0.10 only. Further increase in Ni caused the appearance of multiple phases. The optical energy band gaps are determined as 3.30, 3.35 and 3.52 eV for Ni content of 0.00, 0.07 and 0.10 respectively. The temperature dependent electrical resistivity and the frequency dependent capacitance are observed to increase with increasing Ni content. The resonance frequency, which was determined from the capacitance-frequency dependence, was observed to shift from 12.14 to 10.47 kHz as the x values increase from 0.00 to 0.10 respectively.
