    Gamification in Neurosurgery Education
(Iated-int Assoc Technology Education & development, 2017) Topalli, Damla; Cagiltay, Nergiz Ercil
Nowadays, gamification is becoming popular as a new form of education in healthcare applications, due to the need of creating more effective educational practices. Educators in healthcare field are currently applying strategies used in popular games to create more engaging learning environments. Studies in the literature show that, creating learning environments by using gamification leads to better improved learning. The main goal of this approach is to increase the motivation of the participant. Accordingly, this study aims to examine the effect of gamification on learning in neurosurgery education. In order to better understand this effect of gamification on learning, a surgical simulation game "Wire Haptic in Dark" is developed in two versions by applying gamification techniques as a part of Endoneurosurgery Education Project (ECE). The scenario is developed in two versions: one containing some gamification attributes and the other one not including any gamification attributes. The gamification version of the scenario is designed by showing the time passed to perform the task successful, the score of the participant on the screen while playing the game and including sounds in case of the collision during the game, whereas the other version is created without sound, time and score information. The experimental results of this study reveal that gamification enhances the performance as well as the motivation of the participant. As motivation increases, participant performance in a given game task becomes more effective. The results of this study aimed to help the surgical educators and the instructional system designers to improve the benefits of using gamification in learning environments for the surgical education programs.

Interaction Patterns Among Global Software Development Learning Teams
(Ieee, 2009) Serce, Fatma Cemile; Serçe, Fatma Cemile; Swigger, Kathleen; Alpaslan, Ferda Nur; Brazile, Robert; Dafoulas, George; Lopez, Victor; Serçe, Fatma Cemile; Information Systems Engineering; Information Systems Engineering
This paper describes a study of the impact of communication behaviors on the performance of global software teams. Using a content analysis technique developed by [10], the researchers first characterized the asynchronous communications among student teams in Panama, Turkey and the US as they worked to complete a global software development project. Cluster analysis was then used to identify groups with similar communication patterns, which is defined as the proportion of time spent on each of the behaviors. Results suggest that particular patterns of communication behaviors are associated with higher performance. More specifically, it appears that communications related to the "contributing" category seem to have the strongest relationship to high performance.

Open Source Learning Management Systems in E-Learning and Moodle
    (2010) Aydin,C.C.; Tirkes,G.
In the last decade, the effect of Internet usage in education has increased gradually and new technologies have improved student's learning. By using distance learning tools, the student education can be more flexible with respect to place and time constraints. So, students can access information in every time and everywhere either in libraries or during the lectures. As is widely known that, distance learning is costly, and cost-effectiveness becomes more important as the institutions become large-scale providers of distance education. Cost which is the most important disadvantages of distance learning according to traditional learning environments can be removed with the extensive features of the Open Source Software. Generalizing the usage of Open Source Software will provide development of learning tools and increases the educational quality. As far as the literature is reviewed, not much research has already been conducted about the comparisons of open source learning management systems in distance education. In this study, some analyses and comparisons were made about open source learning management systems and Moodle was outstanding with many features among other LMS that aims to improve the educational quality and include the tools that an e-learning system should have. © 2010 IEEE.

An Application of High-Power Electromagnetic Pulse: Forming of Sheet Metal Using Electromagnetic Waves
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2016) Inanan,G.; Baranoglu,B.; Aydin,E.
In this study, the application of high velocity metal forming process by means of electromagnetic field is proposed. Electromagnetic Sheet Metal Forming (ESMF) is a process of forming sheet metal with very high speed (in milliseconds) without mechanical contact using the energy density of a pulsed magnetic field. In this process, deformation of the workpiece is driven by a transient electric current that is induced in a coil using a capacitor bank and discharge switch. This study presents some experiments and their results by examining the effects of different parameters in the proposed ESMF setup. The analysis and modelling of Electromagnetic sheet metal forming (ESMF) process is presented, as well. It has been seen that, it is possible to design a new system using the outcomes of this study. © 2015 Chamber of Electrical Engineers of Turkey.

Personality Type Indicator Models in Serious Games: a Case Study in a Surgical Navigation Game
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2015) Menekse,G.G.; Cagiltay,N.E.; Ozcelik,E.
Serious games are a popular concept in both the research and commercial areas. It is agreed that the concept refers to the use of computer games without the main purpose of pure entertainment. In addition to being entertaining, they have some additional educational or training objectives as well. Serious games are used in different areas such as military, government, educational, corporate, and healthcare. However, according to their individual differences, it is not always possible to provide such an educational environment that fits expectations and preferences of all audience. Hence, personalization is becoming an essential issue in serious game environments, which focus on a human-centered paradigm aiming to provide adaptive and personalized services to the users according to the context. However, how such a personalization should be affectively implemented in the design of serious games is a challenge. This study aims to better understand the affect of personality types on game play. For this purpose, a game-based simulation environment which also records all details of the player during the performance of several tasks in the game play was used. Twenty nine students were asked to play the simulation game. Additionally, their personality types were collected based on the theory of psychological types by Carl Jung, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) which measures personality preferences as defined by Four Dichotomous pairs of mental functions or attitudes. The correlation between these personality types and individual performance measures of players during the game play was analyzed. However no significant correlation between game parameters and the players' personality types has been recorded. This may be because of the limited number of participants that need to be examined in the future studies. © 2015 IEEE.

COMPARISON OF COMPUTER-BASED PROPAGATION MODELS WITH EXPERIMENTAL DATA COLLECTED IN AN URBAN AREA AT 1800 MHz
(Ieee, 2015) Acar, Tarik; Caliskan, Fatma; Aydin, Elif
Nowadays a lot of models are set for the efficient and economic usage of frequency band since the band is a limited source. Therefore, the propagation models created for this purpose were studied in the literature. These models are Free Space Path Loss (Fspl) + Reflection plus Multiple Diffraction (RMD), COST-Hata and COST-WI models. In order to compare the success of the models, electric field strength measurements were taken in a chosen district (Mustafa Kemal Mahallesi Ankara, Turkey) where an irregular structure style can be observed. First set of measurements were recorded at random coordinates and second set of measurements were collected by the following coordinates tracking on a single line. As a conclusion, measured values were compared with the results which were taken from the mentioned models with graphical presentations. The most appropriate model was tried to be found and as another aim of the study, a correction factor was generated as a modification for COST-Hata propagation model.

Indoor Location Finding Algorithms for Mobile Robots Carrying Passive Rfid Tags
    (2012) Özyurt,E.; Aydin,E.; Yapici,A.C.
Precise localization of mobile robots is critical issue in military, industrial and show business applications. In the literature, several localization techniques has been proposed, in which reader is carried by the mobile object. But in this study a passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag is attached to mobile robot and the reader antennas being dispersed around the environment. This novelty protects the mobile robot from an increase of weight and results in saving in battery consumption. Also by this way, an increase in mobile object requires a mere increase in low cost passive RFID tags in the navigation system. We have applied a signal pattern matching algorithm, Weighted Centroid Localization (WCL) and Selective Adaptive Weighted Localization (SAWCL) algorithms to locate the tag via Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) and we compare the results. In this study a pilot application is implemented and a prototype is developed to show the proof of concept of the system. © 2012 IEEE.
