    Unified complexity measure: a measure of complexity

    This paper proposes a new complexity metric. The proposed metric is a unified complexity measure (UCM) and includes all major factors responsible for the complexity of a program including cognitive aspects. The applicability of the measure is evaluated through empirical, theoretical and practical validation processes. The test cases and comparative study prove its soundness and robustness.

    A Study on the Key Soft Skills for Successful Participation of Students in Multinational Engineering Education

    Soft-skills have proved to be a necessary complement to technical skills in today's multinational workplaces. As universities are facing the challenge of promoting internationalization and mobility in students and teachers, they have to decide how to help their students in developing these skills as well as increase their awareness on the cultural differences in multinational settings. After a long trajectory of participation in multinational educational experiences, the authors launched a survey to check if their previous findings on the preferred soft skills by educational experts and managers still remain valid after 5 years. Another goal of the study was the analysis of the link between preference for specific soft skills and cultural background in each country as characterized by Hofstede's indicators. The data collected from 123 experts from 45 different countries have confirmed the existence of a stable core set of preferred soft skills at global level and also for European countries. Results have also shown links between specific cultural indicators and preference for some soft skills.

    Maintaining Software Through Bit-Parallelism and Hashing the Parameterized q-grams

    In the software maintenance, it is often required to find duplicity present in the codes. Two code fragments are equivalent, if one can be transformed into the other via consistent renaming of identifiers, literals and variables. This equivalency can be detected by parameterized string matching. In this matching, a given pattern is said to match with a substring of the text, if there exists a one-to-one correspondence between symbols of and symbols of. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm for this problem by using both the overlapping and non-overlapping q-gram. We show the effect of running time of the algorithm on increasing the duplicity present in the code.

    Potential of Support-Vector Regression for Forecasting Stream Flow

    Stream flow is an important input for hydrology studies because it determines the water variability and magnitude of a river. Water resources engineering always deals with historical data and tries to estimate the forecasting records in order to give a better prediction for any water resources applications, such as designing the water potential of hydroelectric dams, estimating low flow, and maintaining the water supply. This paper presents three soft-computing approaches for dealing with these issues, i.e. artificial neural networks (ANNs), adaptive-neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFISs), and support vector machines (SVMs). Telom River, located in the Cameron Highlands district of Pahang, Malaysia, was used in making the estimation. The Telom River's daily mean discharge records, such as rainfall and river-level data, were used for the period of March 1984-January 2013 for training, testing, and validating the selected models. The SVM approach provided better results than ANFIS and ANNs in estimating the daily mean fluctuation of the stream's flow.

    An Artificial Neural Network Model for Road Accident Prediction: a Case Study of a Developing Country

    Road traffic accidents (RTA) are one of the major root causes of the unnatural loses of human beings all over the world. Although the rates of RTAs are decreasing in most developed countries, this is not the case in developing countries. The increase in the number of vehicles and inefficient drivers on the road, as well as to the poor conditions and maintenance of the roads, are responsible for this crisis in developing countries. In this paper, we produce a design of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model for the analysis and prediction of accident rates in a developing country. We apply the most recent (1998 to 2010) data to our model. In the design, the number of vehicles, accidents, and population were selected and used as model parameters. The sigmoid and linear functions were used as activation functions with the feed forward-back propagation algorithm. The performance evaluation of the model signified that the ANN model is better than other statistical methods in use.

    An Approach for the Empirical Validation of Software Complexity Measures

    Software metrics are widely accepted tools to control and assure software quality. A large number of software metrics with a variety of content can be found in the literature; however most of them are not adopted in industry as they are seen as irrelevant to needs, as they are unsupported, and the major reason behind this is due to improper empirical validation. This paper tries to identify possible root causes for the improper empirical validation of the software metrics. A practical model for the empirical validation of software metrics is proposed along with root causes. The model is validated by applying it to recently proposed and well known metrics.

    Choice Functions for Autonomous Search in Constraint Programming: Ga Vs. Pso

    The variable and value ordering heuristics are a key element in Constraint Programming. Known together as the enumeration strategy they may have important consequences on the solving process. However, a suitable selection of heuristics is quite hard as their behaviour is complicated to predict. Autonomous search has been recently proposed to handle this concern. The idea is to dynamically replace strategies that exhibit poor performances by more promising ones during the solving process. This replacement is carried out by a choice function, which evaluates a given strategy in a given amount of time via quality indicators. An important phase of this process is performed by an optimizer, which aims at finely tuning the choice function in order to guarantee a precise evaluation of strategies. In this paper we evaluate the performance of two powerful choice functions: the first one supported by a genetic algorithm and the second one by a particle swarm optimizer. We present interesting results and we demonstrate the feasibility of using those optimization techniques for Autonomous Search in a Constraint Programming context.

    Estimating Quality of Javascript

    This paper proposes a complexity metric for Java script since JavaScript is the most popular scripting language that can run in all of the major web browsers. The proposed metric "JavaScript Cognitive Complexity Measure (JCCM)" is intended to assess the design quality of scripts. The metrics has been evaluated theoretically and validated empirically through real test cases. The metric has also been compared with other similar metrics. The theoretical, empirical validation and comparative study prove the worth and robustness of the metric.

    Weak Measurement Theory and Modified Cognitive Complexity Measure

    Measurement is one of the problems in the area of software engineering. Since traditional measurement theory has a major problem in defining empirical observations on software entities in terms of their measured quantities, Morasca has tried to solve this problem by proposing Weak Measurement theory. In this paper, we tried to evaluate the applicability of weak measurement theory by applying it on a newly proposed Modified Cognitive Complexity Measure (MCCM). We also investigated the applicability of Weak Extensive Structure for deciding on the type of scale for MCCM. It is observed that the MCCM is on weak ratio scale.

    An E-Environment System for Socio-Economic Sustainability and National Security

    Though there are adequate institutional frameworks and legal instruments for the protection of the Sub-Saharan African environment, their impact on the development and conservation (protection) of the environment leaves much to be desired. This assertion is substantiated by the reality that inspite of these regulatory frameworks, the environment is largely degraded with negative ramifications for the twin goals of attaining sustainable socio-economic advancement and realization of environmental rights. Both national and regional state of environment (SoE) reports show that degradation is apparent. It is worthy of mention that almost all African countries have ratified and domesticated the various regional and subregional environmental agreement. Efforts to solve the puzzle have revealed that corruption and environmental degradation in Sub-Saharan Africa are closely linked. Financial impropriety in ecological funds management, poorly equipped environmental protection institutions, and inadequate citizens' environmental management awareness campaigns are outcomes of corruption in the public sector. Since corruption thrives in the absence of transparency and accountability, this study proposes a cutting-edge technology-based solution that promotes participatory environmental accountability using an e-Environment system. The web-based multi-tier e-Environment system will empower both citizens and government officials to deliberate online real-time on environmental policies, programmes and projects to be embarked upon. Both parties will equally put forward proposals on the use of tax payers money in the environment sector while monitoring discrepancies between amount budgeted, amount released and actual amount spent. We applied design and software engineering skills to actualize the proposed solution. Using Nigeria as case study, our research methodology comprised literature review, requirements gathering, design of proposed solution using universal modelling language (UML) and development/implementation on the Microsoft SharePoint platform. In view of our determination to evolve a zero-defect software, we applied Cleanroom Software Engineering techniques. The outcome obtained so far has proved that the model supports our expectations. The system is not only practical, but ecologically sound. It is anticipated that the full-scale implementation of such an enterprise e-Environment system will decrease the current tide of corruption in the environment sector, mitigate environmental degradation and by extension, reduce social-economic tensions and guarantee national security.
