Jean Rhys'in Wide Sargasso Sea ve Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie'nin Purple Hibiscus Adlı Eserlerinde Postkolonyal Feminizm ve Kadın Karakterlerin Zorluklarla Mücadeleleri
(2024) Alshhab, Rabıah Ibrahım Ammar; Aras, Gökşen
The thesis explores the plethora of challenges, obstacles and oppression women faced in postcolonial societies in Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Purple Hibiscus, through two main female protagonists, Antoinette, and Kamili. Throughout the thesis, the focus will be on the theories of Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Chandra Talpade Mohanty, and Kimberle` Crenshaw, to examine the aspects and factors of oppression and power structures that Antoinette and Kambili were subjected to in their societies and how they overcame these challenges to empower themselves and gain their rights. Rhys and Adichie are two of the most renowned and well-known Feminist writers of the modern period. They produced interesting and remarkable novels shedding light on the suffering of women in post colonized societies. They played a vital role in examining and highlighting the legacies of colonialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in their countries. To illustrate, Rhys and Adichie demonstrate women's difficulties by portraying struggling female characters in their novels, Wide Sargasso Sea, and Purple Hibiscus. In both novels, deep and significant issues are outlined, they engage in critically presenting the intersecting power structures of colonialism and the impact it has had on society generally and on individuals specifically. Wide Sargasso Sea is considered Rhys's most famous and successful novel. The novel is a prequel to Jane Eyre, the protagonist portrays the sorrowful story of Antoinette living in Jamaica, who later becomes the mad wife of Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre. In Purple Hibiscus, Adichie describes the situation of women in Nigeria where religion is used as a weapon and as a tool in domestic violence. Thus, this study will engage with the writers, Rhys's and Adichie's concepts that helped to establish their names as feminist writers and how these concepts are reflected through the main characters Antoinette and Kambili in their novels. Keywords: Wide Sargasso Sea, Purple Hibiscus, Feminism, Postcolonial Feminism, Female Challenges.

Measuring the Reusable Quality for Xml Schema Documents
(Budapest Tech, 2013) Thaw, Tinzar; Misra, Sanjay
eXtensible Markup Language (XML) based web applications are widely used for data describing and providing internet services. The design of XML schema document (XSD) needs to be quantified with software with the reusable nature of XSD. This nature of documents helps software developers to produce software at a lower software development cost. This paper proposes a metric Entropy. Measure of Complexity (EMC), which is intended to measure the reusable quality of XML schema documents. A higher EMC value tends to more reusable quality, and as well, a higher EMC value implies that this schema document contains inheritance feature, elements and attributes. For empirical validation, the metric is applied on 70 WSDL schema files. A comparison with similar measures is also performed. The proposed EMC metric is also validated practically and theoretically. Empirical, theoretical and practical validation and a comparative study proves that the EMC metric is a valid metric and capable of measuring the reusable quality of XSD.

Translation Movements in the Modernization Processes of Turkey and China
    (Academic & Scientific Publishers-asp, 2022) Bayraktar-Ozer, Ozge
The migration of knowledge between cultures is ubiquitous, whether it happens naturally on encountering communities or is consciously planned by authorities to learn from one another. As nations constantly share their scientific and philosophical knowledge with others, translation takes on a key role in the transmission of not only knowledge, but also the advancement of all aspects of the source culture. In this respect, the Qing and Ottoman empires, after experiencing military defeats, were able to recognise the progress made by certain nations as a result of the Industrial Revolution. The knowledge transfer from these industrialized countries therefore became part of the attempts by states, private institutions and reformers to catch up with these countries in the area of development through increased translation initiatives. Trends such as these subsequently continued to shape the culture-planning processes in many countries. Against this background, the present study aims to shine a light on the parallel course of translation movements in the modernization processes of China and Turkey from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. It offers an overview of the translation movements crafted in an analogous pattern that entailed three stages of implementing translation activities in the modernization efforts of the two countries.

The Effect of Endurance-Based Sports on Athlete Success and Psychological Well-Being
(Campus Educa Sports Sl, 2025) Ozpinar, Saliha; Yucel, Ali Serdar; Korkmaz, Murat; Oztas, Dilek; Kuyucu, Mihalis Michael; Aras, Goksen; Yüce, Ali Serdar
The aim of this study is to examine the effects of psychological resilience on sport success and mental health. The relationships between commitment, control and challenge, which are sub-dimensions of psychological resilience, and sport success and psychological wellbeing were evaluated and discussed in detail. Today, the problems arising due to the increasing competitive environment and stress factors have made it more important for athletes to be psychologically strong. Although the relationship between psychological resilience and sport success has been previously examined in the literature, studies evaluating the individual effects of the sub-dimensions of resilience in a large sample group are quite limited. This study aims to overcome this deficiency and make an up-to-date contribution to the subject. A total of 684 students (72 percent male, 28 percent female) studying at the Faculties of Sport Sciences of 16 universities in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa and Antalya participated in the study. Participants completed the Resilience Scale and Mental Health Inventory, and their sporting achievements were evaluated by their coaches using the Sport Achievement Scale. Data were collected via Google Forms (R) and analysed using SPSS 22.0 software with correlation, regression and Granger causality tests. The findings revealed that all resilience sub-dimensions showed positive and significant relationships with sport achievement ( R-2=0.93) and psychological well-being (R-2=0.68). Especially control and challenge factors had the strongest effects. As a result of the research, commitment, control and challenge, which are the sub-dimensions of psychological resilience, significantly affect both success levels and psychological well-being of athletes. Therefore, resilience development programmes for athletes should focus on these areas.

The Representation of Magical Doors in Mohsin Hamid's exit West
(Forum Literary Voice, 2024) Aras, Goksen
Mohsin Hamid presents migration as one of the most debatable global themes in his Exit West (2017). The author fictionalises not only migrants' crises of dislocation in the contemporary world but also their escape to safety through magical means in his novel. Exit West mainly depicts the existential struggles and anxieties of the two migrants, Nadia and Saeed, and their toilsome experiences in their journey to the West after they leave their homeland. The two protagonists of the novel trespass physical borders and walls, like heavily guarded frontiers or oceans through magical doors to create themselves a safe space. It is clear from the very beginning of the novel that Nadia and Saeed try hard to survive in an unnamed South Asian country, which is fraught with political chaos, violence and bloodshed. Having been guided by a number of bribed dark agents, the couple flee their country by passing through some magical doors, towards a future marked by uncertainty and unpredictability. Their first Western destination is the Greek island of Mykonos where they settle in a refugee camp, their second destination is London, and the final stop is Marin, San Francisco. The objective of this paper is to explore the actual and symbolic function of magical doors as the main characters journey to the West to start a free and secure life.

Personality and Individual Differences: Literature in Psychology-Psychology in Literature
(Elsevier Science Bv, 2015) Aras, Goksen
Literature, which intertwines within such fields as history, philosophy, sociology, psychology and so on, is a discipline wherein language is used as a medium of expression so as to interpret man, existence and culture. The objective of this paper is to discuss literature in terms of its interdisciplinary structure, psychology, in particular, considering man and existence, personality and individual differences which have always been studied by writers, philosophers, artists, psychologists and psychiatrists. Several complex notions, unfathomable personalities and ambiguous motives have been associated with characters in literary genres: For example the term Bovarism is explained by means of Flaubert's Madame Bovary. Similar examples in literary works could be multiplied. Man and existence have been fundamental themes in literature, which has existed even before psychology. Works of literature and art enable individuals to be aware of their personalities and individual differences and to question life and existence, the main data in the field of psychology as well. It is overtly seen that there is a very strong correlation between literature and psychology since both of them deal with human beings and their reactions, miseries, desires, and their individual and social concerns by means of different concepts, methods, and approaches. Sarah Scott'ın A Description Of Millennium Hall, Florence Dixie'nin Gloriana; Or, The Revolution Of 1900 ve Fay Weldon'nın Darcy's Utopia Adlı Eserlerinde Ütopik Söylemin İncelenmesi
    (2017) Düzgün, Şebnem; Aras, Gökşen
Sarah Scott'ın A Description of Millenium Hall (1762), Florence Dixie'nin Gloriana; Or, The Revolution of 1900 (1890) ve Fay Weldon'ın Darcy's Utopia (1990) adlı eserleri yönetici sınıfta bulunan erkeklerin gücünü ve imtiyazlarını meşrulaştıran ataerkil politikaları eleştirir.

Diğerinin Sesleri: Chinua Achebe'nin Things Fall Apart ve Tayeb Salih'in Season Of Migration To The North Eserlerinde Kolonyal Karşılaştırmalar ve Kimlik Dönüşümü
(2025) Bratoo, Huda Ammar Taha; Aras, Gökşen
The dynamic of 'us vs. them' has been central to colonial encounters, manifesting as a clash between Western cultures and the societies they sought to dominate. Postcolonial literature often examines this dichotomy, portraying the disruptive tension between the 'inside' of indigenous cultures and the 'outside' forces of Western imperialism. Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart and Tayeb Salih's Season of Migration to the North explore this confrontation, each offering a unique perspective on how colonial and postcolonial encounters redefine identity, culture, and power. While Achebe illustrates the collapse of the Igbo world under the encroachment of British colonialism, Salih examines the lingering psychological and cultural fragmentation caused by Western domination in postcolonial Sudan. Together, these novels interrogate the boundary between 'us' and 'them,' revealing the lasting effects of cultural invasion and resistance. Achebe and Salih both critique the simplistic categorization of the colonizer and the colonized, exploring how the imposition of the 'outside' not only disrupts but also transforms the 'inside,' leaving behind hybrid spaces where identities are reshaped, traditions are reimagined, and power dynamics are contested. In doing so, they underscore the lasting effects of cultural invasion, resistance, and the enduring complexities of postcolonial identity formation.

Demographic Features of Turkish Literature Audiences and Applied Analysis of the Factors Affecting Their Reading Preferences
    (American-Eurasian Network for Scientific Information, 2014) Poyraz,Y.; Korkmaz,M.; Yücel,A.S.; Aras,G.; Çelebi,N.
The purpose of this study is to determine factors affecting reading preferences in parallel with the demographic features of Turkish literature audiences. The study lasted approximately for 7 months. (N=650) individuals attended the study in total. The universe of the study is Turkey while the sample of the study is composed of 8 different provinces. These provinces are Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Trabzon and Gaziantep. A questionnaire form whose reliability and validity had been ensured before and which was composed of 5 point Likert scale was used in the study. The questionnaire form was reformed in accordance with the topic of the study, it was subjected to validity and reliability test and it was carried into main practice through taking views of experts. Data acquired from the results of main practice was analyzed by using SPSS 18.0 packet program and the value of 0.924 was acquired as Cronbach’s Alpha co-efficient. This value indicates that the measuring tool used in this study is quite reliable. The questionnaire is composed of two sections. In the first section, there are questions with regard to determine demographic features of the participants while in the second section, there are scaled questions composed of 120 items. 0.05 of significance level was taken into account among variables in terms of relations and differences. Methods such as different statistics anova, factor and hypothesis tests were applied in the analysis. Moreover, 4 different literary works were mentioned in the study so as to determine attitudes and behaviors of the participants towards literary works. Opinions of the participants were demanded about novels such as Intibah (Rebirth), Araba Sevdasi (Ambition for Car), Mai ve Siyah (Blue and Black) and Çalikusu (The Wren). At the end of the study, it was found out that the participants followed academic publications more frequently, the use of computer and internet had an effect on reading e-book and up-to-date books were read more than those books written in a foreign or ancient language (Ottoman Turkish). Furthermore, it was determined that education and age variables of the participants had an effect on reading habits while gender, age and education variables had an effect in some reading factors. © 2014 AENSI Publisher All rights reserved.
