Article Translation Movements in the Modernization Processes of Turkey and China(Academic & Scientific Publishers-asp, 2022) Bayraktar-Ozer, OzgeThe migration of knowledge between cultures is ubiquitous, whether it happens naturally on encountering communities or is consciously planned by authorities to learn from one another. As nations constantly share their scientific and philosophical knowledge with others, translation takes on a key role in the transmission of not only knowledge, but also the advancement of all aspects of the source culture. In this respect, the Qing and Ottoman empires, after experiencing military defeats, were able to recognise the progress made by certain nations as a result of the Industrial Revolution. The knowledge transfer from these industrialized countries therefore became part of the attempts by states, private institutions and reformers to catch up with these countries in the area of development through increased translation initiatives. Trends such as these subsequently continued to shape the culture-planning processes in many countries. Against this background, the present study aims to shine a light on the parallel course of translation movements in the modernization processes of China and Turkey from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. It offers an overview of the translation movements crafted in an analogous pattern that entailed three stages of implementing translation activities in the modernization efforts of the two countries. Her iki cinste AB dezavantajlı olarak görülmektedirArticle The Effect of Endurance-Based Sports on Athlete Success and Psychological Well-Being(Campus Educa Sports Sl, 2025) Ozpinar, Saliha; Yucel, Ali Serdar; Korkmaz, Murat; Oztas, Dilek; Kuyucu, Mihalis Michael; Aras, Goksen; Yüce, Ali SerdarThe aim of this study is to examine the effects of psychological resilience on sport success and mental health. The relationships between commitment, control and challenge, which are sub-dimensions of psychological resilience, and sport success and psychological wellbeing were evaluated and discussed in detail. Today, the problems arising due to the increasing competitive environment and stress factors have made it more important for athletes to be psychologically strong. Although the relationship between psychological resilience and sport success has been previously examined in the literature, studies evaluating the individual effects of the sub-dimensions of resilience in a large sample group are quite limited. This study aims to overcome this deficiency and make an up-to-date contribution to the subject. A total of 684 students (72 percent male, 28 percent female) studying at the Faculties of Sport Sciences of 16 universities in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa and Antalya participated in the study. Participants completed the Resilience Scale and Mental Health Inventory, and their sporting achievements were evaluated by their coaches using the Sport Achievement Scale. Data were collected via Google Forms (R) and analysed using SPSS 22.0 software with correlation, regression and Granger causality tests. The findings revealed that all resilience sub-dimensions showed positive and significant relationships with sport achievement ( R-2=0.93) and psychological well-being (R-2=0.68). Especially control and challenge factors had the strongest effects. As a result of the research, commitment, control and challenge, which are the sub-dimensions of psychological resilience, significantly affect both success levels and psychological well-being of athletes. Therefore, resilience development programmes for athletes should focus on these areas.Article The Representation of Magical Doors in Mohsin Hamid's exit West(Forum Literary Voice, 2024) Aras, GoksenMohsin Hamid presents migration as one of the most debatable global themes in his Exit West (2017). The author fictionalises not only migrants' crises of dislocation in the contemporary world but also their escape to safety through magical means in his novel. Exit West mainly depicts the existential struggles and anxieties of the two migrants, Nadia and Saeed, and their toilsome experiences in their journey to the West after they leave their homeland. The two protagonists of the novel trespass physical borders and walls, like heavily guarded frontiers or oceans through magical doors to create themselves a safe space. It is clear from the very beginning of the novel that Nadia and Saeed try hard to survive in an unnamed South Asian country, which is fraught with political chaos, violence and bloodshed. Having been guided by a number of bribed dark agents, the couple flee their country by passing through some magical doors, towards a future marked by uncertainty and unpredictability. Their first Western destination is the Greek island of Mykonos where they settle in a refugee camp, their second destination is London, and the final stop is Marin, San Francisco. The objective of this paper is to explore the actual and symbolic function of magical doors as the main characters journey to the West to start a free and secure life. Alman edebiyat eleştirmeni ve kültür tarihçisi Walter Benjamin’in Esrar Üzerine başlıklı eseri, 1927-1934 yılları arasındaki uyuşturucu deneylerinin tutanaklarını içermektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, yaratıcılık kavramını, afyon ve esrarın on dokuzuncu yüzyılda ve öncesinde kullanım alanlarını, fiziksel ve psikolojik etkilerini, bağımlılık kavramını açıklamak, yukarıda adı geçen üç esere ve uyuşturucu kullandığı iddia edilen yazarlara, özellikle Samuel Taylor Coleridge’e göndermeler yaparak, edebiyat, üretim, yaratıcılık ve bağımlılık ilişkisini değerlendirmektir.Master Thesis Virginia Woolf'un Bayan Dalloway ve Deniz Feneri Eserlerinde Büyük Savaşın Yankıları(2025) Çelik, Hilal; Aras, GökşenThe thesis examines the impacts of the Great War in Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse within the framework of modernist aesthetics, stream of consciousness narrative techniques and Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity. By examining how Woolf's representation of fragmented, multi-faceted reality reflects devastating effects of the war, this study presents a different perspective to Woolf's creative process, incorporating literature and science. The importance of the study lies in the interdisciplinary approach illustrated through an analysis of Woolf's relationship with Modernism as a result of the war and her portrayal of subjective reality with her innovative techniques. The originality of this study is rooted in its application of Einstein's Theory of Relativity to Woolf's narration, examining her portrayal of identity, memory and human nature with an emphasis on relativity of time and space, as exemplified by James Ramsay's assertion that 'Nothing was simple one thing' (Woolf, 1994:138) in To the Lighthouse. These novels exemplify Woolf's ability to portray individual lives with broader cultural and philosophical themes, making her a cornerstone of modernist literature.Article The Woman Question as Reflected in Charlotte Brontë’s Villette Through the Female Character Lucy Snowe(2011) Aras, Gökşen19.yüzyıl İngiltere’sinde “Kadın Sorunsalı,” kadının hem toplum içindeki yeri hem de özel hayatı açısından, bu dönem içinde özellikle kadın romancılar tarafından yazılan romanlarda yansıtılmıştır. When those senses are integrated with the eyesight, we may get all the necessary information about the environment. In terms of human-computer-interaction, the eyesight information is provided by visual displays. On the other hand, touch and feel senses are provided by means of special devices called "haptic" devices. Haptic devices are used in many fields such as computer-aided design, distance-surgery operations, medical simulation environments, training simulators for both military and medical applications, etc. Besides the touch and sense feelings haptic devices also provide force-feedbacks, which allows designing a realistic environment in virtual reality applications. Haptic devices can be categorized into three classes: tactile devices, kinesthetic devices and hybrid devices. Tactile devices simulate skin to create contact sensations. Kinesthetic devices apply forces to guide or inhibit body movement, and hybrid devices attempt to combine tactile and kinesthetic feedback. Among these kinesthetic devices exerts controlled forces on the human body, and it is the most suitable type for the applications such as surgical simulations. The education environments that require skill-based improvements, the touch and feel senses are very important. In some cases providing such educational environment is very expensive, risky and may also consist of some ethical issues. For example, surgical education is one of these fields. The traditional education is provided in operating room on real patients. This type of education is very expensive, requires long time periods, and does not allow any error-and-try type of experiences. It is stressfully for both the educators and the learners. Additionally there are several ethical considerations. Simulation environments supported by such haptic user interfaces provide an alternative and safer educational alternative. There are several studies showing some evidences of educational benefits of this type of education (Tsuda et al 2009; Sutherland et al 2006). Similarly, this technology can also be successfully integrated to the physical rehabilitation process of some diseases requiring motor skill improvements (Kampiopiotis & Theodorakou, 2003). Hence, today simulation environments are providing several opportunities for creating low cost and more effective training and educational environment. Today, combining three dimensional (3D) simulation environments with these haptic interfaces is an important feature for advancing current human-computer interaction. On the other hand haptic devices do not provide a full simulation environment for the interaction and it is necessary to enhance the environment by software environments. Game engines provide high flexibility to create 3-D simulation environments. Unity3D is one of the tools that provides a game engine and physics engine for creating better 3D simulation environments. In the literature there are many studies combining these two technologies to create several educational and training environments. However, in the literature, there are not many researches showing how these two technologies can be integrated to create simulation environment by providing haptic interfaces as well. There are several issues that need to be handled for creating such integration. First of all the haptic devices control libraries need to be integrated to the game engine. Second, the game engine simulation representations and real-time interaction features need to be coordinately represented by the haptic device degree of freedom and force-feedback speed and features. In this study, the integration architecture of Unity 3D game engine and the PHANToM Haptic device for creating a surgical education simulation environment is provided. The methods used for building this integration and handling the synchronization problems are also described. The algorithms developed for creating a better synchronization and user feedback such as providing a smooth feeling and force feedback for the haptic interaction are also provided. We believe that, this study will be helpful for the people who are creating simulation environment by using Unity3D technology and PHANToM haptic interfaces.Book Part IX: Monster or victim: Isolation and loneliness in frankenstein by Mary Shelley(Peter Lang AG, 2021) Aras,G.Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is the story of an ambitious scientist Victor Frankenstein and his creature, who is desperately isolated, frustrated and discriminated. For being found hideous and loathsome, he is deserted and despised even by its creator. It is also apparent that Victor Frankenstein is not very much different from his creature as he also experiences loneliness and isolation in his entire life for he is obsessed with the desire for knowledge and science, whereas the creature is forced to lead an isolated and alienated life due to his creator/father because of the way of its unnatural creation, and the creature only yearns for love. The novel is one of the most notable works in which the idea of monster and victim co- exist, and the border between monstrosity and victimisation is blurred because it is not possible to decide who the actual monster is; is it the creator or his creation? Due to being exposed to discrimination and lovelessness, the created/monster becomes violent, and is ready to take revenge; however, he is also doomed to be victimised. The text puts emphasis on isolation and loneliness concerning both the creator who reanimates a dead body and his creation who is born out of death. Since the creator dedicates his whole energy and life to scientific research, he simply neglects familial and social relations. Thus, the two are both isolated. The aim of this essay is to investigate the theme of isolation and loneliness which definitely goes beyond psychological and/or physical breakdown and also leads to darkness, disaster, destruction, and eventually to death with reference to Kristeva's theory of abject.
