Semantic Interoperability and Reusability in Iot: a Systematic Mapping Study
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2024-09-21) Alsaeh, A.; Sezen, A.
Internet of Things (IoT) enables different devices, sensors, or humans to connect via the Internet. However, various IoT devices generate heterogeneous data in different formats. This hinders IoT devices from integrating and exchanging data between them. Adding semantic web technologies to the Web of Things (WoT) has greatly enabled IoT devices to be semantically interoperable. Moreover, W3C has established a Semantic Sensor Network (SSN) ontology that can be reused in different IoT applications due to difficulties in developing new ontologies. Many systematic mapping reviews in the literature have addressed semantic interoperability in IoT. Although reusability can play a vital role in enhancing semantic interoperability, none of those studies has discussed reusability and semantic interoperability together in the IoT area. In this article, we are seeking to fill this gap in the current literature by conducting a systematic mapping review for 72 articles to point out semantic interoperability as well as reusability in IoT. Five research questions have been identified regarding challenges and possible solutions about both semantic interoperability and reusability. The reviewed articles are classified into four categories. There are 47 articles about semantic interoperability, 2 of which discuss reusability, 18 of which include semantic interoperability with reusability, and the last category includes surveys. Moreover, the research questions are also assigned to the related category that answers the questions. This article highlights important insights about semantic web techniques namely, RDF, ontology, SPARQL, and OWL. Additionally, this article concludes how these techniques are enhanced in diverse domains such as healthcare, smart cities, and the energy domain. On top of that, this systematic mapping shows how reused ontology plays a remarkable role in the IoT domain Finally, results that answer the research questions are figured out and deeply analyzed in the tables and graphs. © 2024 IEEE.

A Hybrid Approach for Semantic Image Annotation
(Ieee-inst Electrical Electronics Engineers inc, 2021) Sezen, Arda; Turhan, Cigdem; Sengul, Gokhan
In this study, a framework that generates natural language descriptions of images within a controlled environment is proposed. Previous work on neural networks mostly focused on choosing the right labels and/or increasing the number of related labels to depict an image. However, creating a textual description of an image is a completely different phenomenon, structurally, syntactically, and semantically. The proposed semantic image annotation framework presents a novel combination of deep learning models and aligned annotation results derived from the instances of the ontology classes to generate sentential descriptions of images. Our hybrid approach benefits from the unique combination of deep learning and semantic web technologies. We detect objects from unlabeled sports images using a deep learning model based on a residual network and a feature pyramid network, with the focal loss technique to obtain predictions with high probability. The proposed framework not only produces probabilistically labeled images, but also the contextual results obtained from a knowledge base exploiting the relationship between the objects. The framework's object detection and prediction performances are tested with two datasets where the first one includes individual instances of images containing everyday scenes of common objects and the second custom dataset contains sports images collected from the web. Moreover, a sample image set is created to obtain annotation result data by applying all framework layers. Experimental results show that the framework is effective in this controlled environment and can be used with other applications via web services within the supported sports domain.

(2024) Sezen, Arda; Kılıç, Can; Uzun, İsmail Berk; Saleem, Wardah; Ardoğan, Abdullah Taha
Along with the pandemic, the number of employees working remotely has significantly increased. With this increase, also the cyberthreats related to remote workers greatly increased. So, the main question of how remote working affects the cybersecurity tried to be explained via analyzing common threats and mitigations in this study. Throughout the analysis it is found that two more aspects should be investigated; The threats affecting the remote workers and the mitigations affecting the related threats. To provide sufficient answers to these questions, well-known cyber-attacks explained using various studies with countermeasures in the third section. Then we focused on effective security practices and tools as well as how to make those practices and tools more effective. To provide sufficient guidance about how to use these mitigation ways for which attack types, a complete guideline provided for the remote workers. Also, a questionnaire is conducted among some university students to understand the awareness of phishing attacks using wrong URLs and website and email scams from many organizations and the results are showing that for the URL part the accuracy is 84.61% and for the email scams accuracy is 75.64%.

A Comparative Study of Deep Learning Models for Log Anomaly Detection Using the HDFS Dataset
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2026-02-05) Sezen, Arda; Kavlak, Yesim
In this paper, we examine log-based anomaly detection based on four deep learning models: Autoencoder, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Transformer. We take the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) dataset, train and test all models using an identical preprocessing pipeline to ensure fair comparison. We perform the log parsing, session formation, and sliding-window generation to convert raw logs into sequential representations suitable for learning. Empirical results demonstrate the capacity that LSTM and Transformer can capture long-term dependencies on log sequences, and CNN and Autoencoder have a moderate detection performance, but they are not able to handle rare or complicated abnormal patterns. The results provide the significance of sequential modeling on log anomaly detection, and they also show that contemporary deep learning approaches substantially surpass reconstruction-based or convolution-based counterparts in standardized environments. © 2026 IEEE.

(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2026-02-05) Kocabas, Ifagat Buse; Sezen, Arda; Ustun, Tutku Irem; Bakal, Mahmut Furkan; Turkmen, Guzin; Sengul, Gokhan
Synthetic data has become an essential component in modern computer vision and robotics research, particularly in applications where collecting large, diverse, and fully annotated real world datasets are impractical or impossible. This study presents a high resolution, multimodal, and multi camera synthetic dataset specifically developed for human detection and partial visibility analysis in indoor environments. Two distinct scenarios were designed within NVIDIA Isaac Sim, involving a total of eleven cameras positioned across separate residential spaces. The use of 120 FPS animations and synchronized multimodal annotation generation enabled detailed capture of human motion, occlusion, and scene variability. Diverse human models, including variations in appearance, clothing, accessories, and behavior, were incorporated to replicate real world heterogeneity and challenge vision algorithms under complex conditions. Despite the benefits of precise annotation and full environmental control, the study also revealed clear constraints related to computational load and real time simulation performance, particularly when generating dense annotation sets. The resulting dataset nonetheless provides a rich and comprehensive foundation for research in human tracking, multi camera fusion, behavior understanding, and security oriented computer vision systems. The expanded analysis concludes that synthetic data, when produced through high fidelity simulation workflows, offers a practical, ethical, and scalable alternative that can significantly advance both methodological and applied research. © 2026 IEEE.
