Article Citation Count: 67A blue to highly transmissive soluble electrochromic polymer based on poly(3,4-propylenedioxyselenophene) with a high stability and coloration efficiency(Royal Soc Chemistry, 2011) Cihaner, Atilla; Atak, Samed; Onal, Ahmet M.; Cihaner, Atilla; Chemical EngineeringThe optical and electrochemical properties of a regioregular and soluble alkylenedioxyselenophene-based electrochromic polymer, namely poly(3,3-didecyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-selenopheno[3,4-b][1,4] dioxepine (PProDOS-C-10), which is synthesized by electrochemical polymerization, are highlighted. It is noted that this unique polymer has a low band gap (1.58 eV) and is exceptionally stable under ambient atmospheric conditions. Polymer films retain 97% of their electroactivity after 40 000 cycles. The percentage transmittance of a PProDOS-C10 film was found to be 56.4% at 638 nm and 55.8% at 700 nm. Furthermore, this novel soluble PProDOS-C10 polymer shows an electrochromic behavior: a color change from pure blue to a highly transparent state in a low switching time (1.0 s) during oxidation, with high coloration efficiencies (328 cm 2 C-1 at 638 nm and 319 cm(2) C-1 at 700 nm) when compared to its thiophene analogue.Article Citation Count: 1D-A-D type conjugated polymers in dual electrochromic devices tuning from green to blue colors(Elsevier Science Sa, 2023) Cihaner, Atilla; Onal, Ahmet M.; Cihaner, Atilla; Chemical EngineeringIn this study, the electrochemical and electro-optical properties of four different dual electrochromic devices were unraveled. In all devices, soluble donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type conjugated electrochromic polymers based on didecyl substituted 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene and heterodiazole analogs were used, and they were coated on ITO electrochemically for the construction of the electrochromic devices. Because all D-A-D polymers and PEDOT are colorful in their neutral states and colorless in their oxidized states, it is possible to observe one -to-one colors of pure two polymers in their electrochromic devices rather than a mixture of colors. It was observed that devices changed their colors from the tunes of green to blue under applied external voltage. Switching times, coloration efficiencies and stabilities of the electrochromic devices were calculated as ranging from 1.0 to 6.0 s, 133-544 cm2/C and 54-91 %, respectively, after 5000 cycles. The P(PSeP-C10)-P(PNP-C10) device showed the highest coloration efficiency (544 cm2/C) as well as the best optical and electrochemical stabilities among the electrochromic devices after 5000 cycles (91 % and 92 %, respectively).Article Citation Count: 34A Diverse-Stimuli Responsive Chemiluminescent Probe with Luminol Scaffold and Its Electropolymerization(Wiley-v C H verlag Gmbh, 2010) Cihaner, Atilla; Cihaner, Atilla; Algi, Fatih; Onal, Ahmet M.; Chemical EngineeringA diverse-stimuli responsive chemiluminescent system, SNS-Lum, and its electropolymerization to give PSNS-Lum, which is the first example of conjugated polymers with pendant luminol arms inducing chemiluminescence in the presence of super oxide radical anion under neutral conditions, are highlighted.Article Citation Count: 26Donor-acceptor polymer electrochromes with cyan color: Effect of alkyl chain length on doping processes(Elsevier, 2012) Cihaner, Atilla; Icli-Ozkut, Merve; Algi, Fatih; Onal, Ahmet M.; Cihaner, Atilla; Chemical EngineeringA new series of donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type compounds consisting of dialkyl substituted 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene and benzothiadiazole units were synthesized and polymerized chemically and electrochemically to investigate the effect of alkyl chain length on the doping process of the conjugated polymers. It was found that the alkyl chain length plays a key role on both doping processes and the solubility of the polymer. It is also noteworthy that this new series of D-A-D electrochromes transmits or reflects the cyan color of the Cyan-Magenta-Yellow (CMY) color space in the neutral state which can be switched to transmissive grey when oxidized. It is found that these units play key roles on the redox behavior, band gap, neutral state color, and the electrochromic performance (stability, optical contrast, coloration efficiency, and switching time) of the system. It is noted that electropolymerization of these D-A systems provides processable low band gap electrochromes, P1-P5, exhibiting high redox stability, coloration efficiency, transmittance and/or contrast ratio and low response time. Furthermore, P1-P5 reflect various hues of blue and green pallets of the RGB color-space in the neutral state. In particular, it is noteworthy that P5 is an excellent blue-to-colorless polymeric electrochrome, which, to our best knowledge, exhibits the highest optical contrast and coloration efficiency among the D A type systems. The panoramic breadth of the neutral state colors and intriguing features of these polymeric materials further confirm that D A approach allows engineering tunable electrochromes, which hold promise for commercialization of polymeric ROB electrochromics.Article Citation Count: 22Effect of fluorine substituted benzothiadiazole on electro-optical properties of donor-acceptor-donor type monomers and their polymers(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2020) Cihaner, Atilla; Ercan, Yunus Emre; Onal, Ahmet M.; Cihaner, Atilla; Chemical EngineeringA series of trimeric monomers bearing thiophene donor units and fluorinated analogues of benzothiadiazole acceptor units was synthesized via donor-acceptor-donor approach and polymerized electrochemically in order to investigate the effect of fluorine atom on electro-optical properties of both monomers and their corresponding polymers. All monomers exhibited solvatochromic and fluorescent properties. The introduction of fluorine atom into the conjugated backbone increased the oxidation potentials. Upon moving from nonfluorinated to fully fluorinated analogues, the oxidation potential shifts anodically from 1.30 V to 1.7 V. As in the case of monomers, the fluorine atom substitution also resulted in a decrease in the HOMO energy level of the corresponding polymers, leading to an increase in the electrochemical band gap energy (1.71-1.97 eV). This result can be attributed to deviations from planarity and also to decrease in the effective conjugation length. The polymeric film also exhibited electrochromic properties under various external potentials. Switching time and coloration efficiency values decreased with increasing number of fluorine atom substitution.Article Citation Count: 0Effect of phthalimide and thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6,dione acceptors on p-conjugated donor-acceptor-donor monomers: Experimental and theoretical investigations of photophysical and electrochemical properties(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2023) Cihaner, Atilla; Arabaci, Elif Demir; Yildirim, Erol; Cihaner, Atilla; Onal, Ahmet M.; Chemical EngineeringIn this study, two novel donor-acceptor-donor monomers were synthesized by coupling a phthalimide (PI) acceptor unit with thiophene (T) and ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT (E)) donor units. These two novel PI-based monomers, namely 2-(2-ethylhexyl)-4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)isoindoline-1,3-dione (T-PI) and 4,7-bis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b] [1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-2-(2-ethylhexyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione (E-PI), were fully characterized via UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as electrochemical methods, and the results were directly compared with those of previously synthesized thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD)-based analogues to report the results for four classes of monomers. In this regard, the ef-fects of different donor groups and structural modifications in the acceptor unit as changed from PI to TPD have been investigated to reveal the precise effect of the donor and acceptor on the optical and electrochemical properties of the monomers. All monomers exhibits an intramolecular charge transfer band in the low energy region due to strong donor and acceptor interactions. The oxidation and reduction potentials of the monomers are found to vary depending on the strengths of both donor and acceptor units. PI-based monomers show more positive oxidation and less negative reduction potentials than TPD-based analogues. Similarly, thiophene-based analogues reveal the same trend in their oxidation and reduction potentials as compared to EDOT-based analogues. Lastly, PI-based monomers could not undergo polymerization via electrochemical method, unlike TPD-based monomers, since the dihedral angle arising between donor and PI acceptor disturbs molecular planarity significantly, as demonstrated by first principle calculations.(C) 2023 Elsevier Ltd. To compare heteroatom effect, thiophene analogue of newly synthesized (FBT)-B-2-F and S2BT-F namely, (5-fluoro-4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5] thiadiazole (T2BT-F)) and its corresponding polymer were also synthesized. Effect of donor units on the electrochemical and optical properties of fluorinated acceptor based systems was investigated in terms of the effect of different sized heteroatoms in five-membered rings on the dihedral angle and planarity. Theoretical calculations also suggested a deviation from planarity upon fluorination. Moreover, electrochemically obtained polymers possess low bandgap values (1.62 eV-1.68 eV for PF2BT-F and PS2BT-F, respectively) and exhibited electrochromic properties with relatively low switching times.Article Citation Count: 5Electrochemical and optical properties of dicyclohexylmethyl substituted poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) analogue(Wiley, 2018) Cihaner, Atilla; Cihaner, Atilla; Onal, Ahmet M.; Chemical EngineeringAn analogue of disubstituted 3,4-propylenedioxythiophenes, namely 3,3-bis(cyclohexylmethyl)-3,4-dihydro-2H-thieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxepin (ProDOT-CycHex(2)), was synthesized and its electrochemical polymerization was carried out successfully in an electrolyte solution of 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate dissolved in a mixture of acetonitrile and dichloromethane (3/1: v/v). The corresponding polymer called PProDOT-CycHex(2) has a reduced band gap of 1.85 eV and an electrochromic property: blue/violet when neutralized and highly transparent when oxidized. Also, PProDOT-CycHex(2) film exhibited faster response time (0.7 s) and higher coloration efficiency (769 cm(2)/C) during oxidation when compared to its benzyl substituted analogue. The strength of acceptor units and intramolecular charge transfer between donor and acceptor units were investigated by using electrochemical and optical methods. The main advantage of phthalimide unit over other acceptor units is the ease of its functionalizability. Thus, utilizing this property, a phthalimide derivative (E2P-POSS) bearing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cage was introduced successfully with EDOT and polymerized electrochemically. The corresponding electroactive polymer, PE2P-POSS, has a band gap of 1.72 eV and is an electrochromic polymer: gray when neutralized and eggplant purple when oxidized.Article Citation Count: 7Electrochemical copolymerization and characterization of dianilines linked by polyether bridge with aniline(Springer, 2010) Tirkeş, Seha; Onal, Ahmet M.; Chemical EngineeringCopolymer of aniline and triethylene glycol bis(o-aminophenyl) ether was synthesized by constant potential electrolysis. Cyclic voltammogram of the copolymer films recorded in the monomer-free electrolytic solution revealed that the redox behavior of the films approaches to that of poly(triethylene glycol bis(o-aminophenyl) ether) with increasing amount of triethylene glycol bis(o-aminophenyl) in the feed ratio. Copolymerization was investigated by in situ recording the changes in the electronic absorption spectrum during electrolysis. The free standing copolymer film was characterized utilizing Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and spectroelectrochemical behavior of the copolymer was investigated via in situ UV-vis spectroscopic technique. Besides the electron spin resonance study of the copolymer film, the different morphologies of the polymers were examined by scanning electron microscopy and the copolymerization was confirmed. The temperature dependence conductivity of the copolymer film was measured by four-probe technique in the temperature range of 100-300 K, and the calculated parameters showed that conduction mechanism fits to variable range hopping.Article Citation Count: 25Electrochemical polymerization of 9-fluorenecarboxylic acid and its electrochromic device application(Elsevier Science Sa, 2008) Cihaner, Atilla; Cihaner, Atilla; Onal, Ahmet M.; Chemical EngineeringPoly(9-fluorenecarboxylic acid) (PFCA) was synthesized by electrochemical oxidation of 9-fluorenecarboxylic acid (FCA) using a mixture of nitromethane and boron trifluoride diethyl etherate as the solvent and tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate as the supporting electrolyte. An insoluble and conducting brownish-orange film was deposited on the electrode surface, both during repetitive cycling and constant potential electrolysis at 1.15 V. Characterization of the polymer film has been carried out using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy technique and thermal behavior was studied via thermal gravimetric analysis. Structural analysis showed that the polymerization of FCA occurred at 2,7-position. Spectroelectrochemical behavior of the polymer film on indium tin oxide working electrode was studied by recording the electronic absorption spectra, in-situ, in monomer-free electrolytic solution at different potentials and it is found that the PFCA film can be reversibly cycled between 0.0 V and 1.2 V Furthermore, a dual type electrochromic device based on PFCA was constructed and its spectroelectrochemical properties were investigated. The electrochromic device exhibits color change from transparent to dark blue with a good open circuit memory. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. The monomers were electrochemically polymerized, via repetitive cycling in acetonitrile-tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate electrolytic medium. Optical and electrochemical properties of the monomers and their corresponding polymers were investigated and it was found that optical properties show slight variations depending on the connectivity between the carbazole and furan moieties. However, all the monomers synthesized in this work exhibited an irreversible oxidation peak at around 1.0 V. Electrochemically obtained polymer films, on the other hand, exhibited quasi-reversible redox behavior due to doping/dedoping of the polymers which was accompanied by a reversible electrochromic behavior. Their band gap values (E-g) were elucidated utilizing spectroelectrochemical data and it was found that polymers obtained from 2,7-substituted carbazole derivatives have slightly lower band gap values. Furthermore, scanning electron micrographs were used for morphological examinations. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. BrMeOTh exhibits a lower oxidation potential (1.68 V vs Ag/AgCl) than thiophene (2.05 V vs Ag/AgCl). Spectroelectrochemical properties of poly(3-bromo-4-methoxythiophene) (PBrMeOTh) was investigated in situ recording the electronic absorption spectra of the polymer film coated on indium-tin oxide (ITO) at various potentials. The maximum transmittance difference between the oxidized and reduced states was measured as 39.2% and the time required to attain 90% of the total transmittance difference was found to be 1.2 s. Both cyclic voltammetric and spectroelectrochemical studies showed that the polymer exhibit a lower oxidation potential, a relatively narrow band gap, a stable conducting state and a higher degree of electrochemical reversibility. It is also found that, as synthesized PBrMeOTh films possess a linear structure along the polymer backbone. Moreover, dual type electrochromic device of PBrMeOTh with poly(3,4-diethylenedioxythiohene) (PEDOT) was constructed and its spectroelectrochemical, electrochromic switching and open circuit stability were investigated. Dual electrochromic device showed a good optical contrast and distinctive color changes with the ability of good switching times (1.1 s) under atmospheric pressure. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The corresponding polymer was characterized by cyclic voltammetry, FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The polymer has a well-defined redox process (E-p,E-1/2 = 0.74 V) and demonstrates a reversible electrochromic behavior; lilac in the neutral state and transparent sky blue in the oxidized state. Also, the polymer had low band gap (E-g = 1.82 eV) and high redox stability (retaining 94.0% of its electro-activity after 500th switch). Moreover, the sensitivity of both the monomer and its polymer towards metal cations was investigated by monitoring the change in the fluorescence intensity. Among various common ions both the monomer and its polymer were found to be selective towards Cu2+ and Cu+ ions by quenching the fluorescence efficiency with a Stern-Volmer constant (K-sv) of (1.4-1.6 x 10(3) M-1) and (1.5-1.8 x 10(2) M-1) for monomer and polymer solutions, respectively. Soluble compounds both in organic media and basic aqueous solution were found to give CL and electroluminescent (EL) reactions by the treatment of oxidants (H2O2 and KMnO4) and by an external potential pulse on the working electrode, respectively. Furthermore, the CL reaction can be speeded up by Fe3+ ion or blood samples. On the other hand, one of the compounds. TTT-Lum, can be polymerized successfully via electrochemically both in 0.1 M LiClO4/acetonitrile containing 5% of borontrifluoro diethylether (BF3-Et2O) and neat BF3-Et2O solution. The corresponding polymer film (PTTT-Lum) bearing CL units has a very stable and a well-defined reversible redox couple. Also, the electrochromic polymer film has a band gap of 1.74 eV and exhibits EL behavior. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Electrochemical behavior of furan was investigated in the same solvent mixture of varying ratios, utilizing cyclic voltammetry. Free-standing polyfuran (PFu) films were obtained in CH3CN/BF3/EE mixture (2/4/4; v/v/v) and characterized using FTIR spectroscopic technique. Spectroelectrochemical behavior of the PFu film was investigated by recording the electronic absorption spectra, in sitn, in monomer-free solution. It is observed that PFu film can be reversibly cycled between -0.1 V (gray) and + 0.6 V versus Ag-wire (gray color); however, this behavior diminishes in the presence of water. Electrochromic device application of PFu film with poly(ethylene dioxythiophene) was also studied. The monomers were electrochemically polymerized via potentiodynamic or potentiostatic methods. The monomers and their polymers exhibited lower oxidation potentials (1.16 V and 1.06 V for monomers; 0.93 V and 0.80 V for polymers vs. Ag/AgCl) and red shifts of the whole dual-band absorption spectra upon moving from S to Se. Intramolecular charge transfer properties of the monomers and the polymers were demonstrated by using electroanalytical and optical methods. Also, the polymers PFSeF and PFSF were multicolored at different redox states and have low band gaps of 1.43 eV and 1.61 eV, respectively.Article Citation Count: 16A glow in the dark: synthesis and electropolymerization of a novel chemiluminescent terthienyl system(Royal Soc Chemistry, 2009) Cihaner, Atilla; Cihaner, Atilla; Onal, Ahmet M.; Chemical EngineeringThe synthesis and characterization of a unique (electro)-chemiluminescent monomer based on a terthienyl system, and its corresponding polymer which is the first example of an electro-active chemiluminescent polymer bearing a pyridazine appendage, are described.Article Citation Count: 2Impedance spectroscopy of N-substituted oligo-oxyethylene polypyrrole films(John Wiley & Sons inc, 2008) Cihaner, Atilla; Onal, Ahmet M.; Chemical EngineeringThe electrochemical properties of neutral (dedoped) and oxidized (doped) poly(1,11-bis(1,1-pyrrole)-3,6,9-trioxaundecane) (poly-I) film electrodes were investigated using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Poly-I was deposited on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) from acetonitrile solution containing 5.0 x 10(-3) M 1,11-bis(1,1-pyrrole)-3,6,9-trioxaundecane (I) and 0.1 M LiClO4 supporting electrolyte. Doped poly-I exhibits a single semicircle in its complex-capacitance plots, indicating a single dominant ion transport process, together with high capacitance values.
