    Advancing Mmwave Altimetry for Unmanned Aerial Systems: a Signal Processing Framework for Optimized Waveform Design

    This research advances millimeter-wave (mmWave) altimetry for unmanned aerial systems (UASs) by optimizing performance metrics within the constraints of inexpensive automotive radars. Leveraging the software-defined architecture, this study encompasses the intricacies of frequency modulated continuous waveform (FMCW) design for three distinct stages of UAS flight: cruise, landing approach, and touchdown within a signal processing framework. Angle of arrival (AoA) estimation, traditionally employed in terrain mapping applications, is largely unexplored for UAS radar altimeters (RAs). Time-division multiplexing multiple input-multiple output (TDM-MIMO) is an efficient method for enhancing angular resolution without compromising the size, weight, and power (SWaP) characteristics. Accordingly, this work argues the potential of AoA estimation using TDM-MIMO to augment situational awareness in challenging landing scenarios. To this end, two corner cases comprising landing a small-sized drone on a platform in the middle of a water body are included. Likewise, for the touchdown stage, an improvised rendition of zoom fast Fourier transform (ZFFT) is investigated to achieve millimeter (mm)-level range accuracy. Aptly, it is proposed that a mm-level accurate RA may be exploited as a software redundancy for the critical weight-on-wheels (WoW) system in fixed-wing commercial UASs. Each stage is simulated as a radar scenario using the specifications of automotive radar operating in the 77-81 GHz band to optimize waveform design, setting the stage for field verification. This article addresses challenges arising from radial velocity due to UAS descent rates and terrain variation through theoretical and mathematical approaches for characterization and mandatory compensation. While constant false alarm rate (CFAR) algorithms have been reported for ground detection, a comparison of their variants within the scope UAS altimetry is limited. This study appraises popular CFAR variants to achieve optimized ground detection performance. The authors advocate for dedicated minimum operational performance standards (MOPS) for UAS RAs. Lastly, this body of work identifies potential challenges, proposes solutions, and outlines future research directions.

    Business Intelligence Strategies, Best Practices, and Latest Trends: Analysis of Scientometric Data From 2003 To 2023 Using Machine Learning

    The widespread use of business intelligence products, services, and applications piques the interest of researchers in this field. The interest of researchers in business intelligence increases the number of studies significantly. Identifying domain-specific research patterns and trends is thus a significant research problem. This study employs a topic modeling approach to analyze domain-specific articles in order to identify research patterns and trends in the business intelligence field over the last 20 years. As a result, 36 topics were discovered that reflect the field's research landscape and trends. Topics such as "Organizational Capability", "AI Applications", "Data Mining", "Big Data Analytics", and "Visualization" have recently gained popularity. A systematic taxonomic map was also created, revealing the research background and BI perspectives based on the topics. This study may be useful to researchers and practitioners interested in learning about the most recent developments in the field. Topics generated by topic modeling can also be used to identify gaps in current research or potential future research directions.

    Career in Cloud Computing: Exploratory Analysis of In-Demand Competency Areas and Skill Sets

    This study aims to investigate up-to-date career opportunities and in-demand competence areas and skill sets for cloud computing (CC), which plays a crucial role in the rapidly developing teleworking environments with the COVID-19 pandemic. In this paper, we conducted a semantic content analysis on 10,161 CC job postings using semi-automated text-mining and probabilistic topic-modeling procedures to discover the competency areas and skill sets as semantic topics. Our findings revealed 22 competency areas and 46 skills, which reflect the interdisciplinary background of CC jobs. The top five competency areas for CC were identified as "Engineering", "Development", "Security", "Architecture", and "Management". Besides, the top three skills emerged as "Communication Skills", "DevOps Tools", and "Software Development". Considering the findings, a competency-skill map was created that illustrates the correlations between CC competency areas and their related skills. Although there are many studies on CC, the competency areas and skill sets required to deal with cloud computing have not yet been empirically studied. Our findings can contribute to CC candidates and professionals, IT organizations, and academic institutions in understanding, evaluating, and developing the competencies and skills needed in the CC industry.

    Covid-19 and E-Learning: an Exploratory Analysis of Research Topics and Interests in E-Learning During the Pandemic

    E-learning has gained further importance and the amount of e-learning research and applications has increased exponentially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is critical to examine trends and interests in e-learning research and applications during the pandemic period. This paper aims to identify trends and research interests in e-learning articles related to COVID-19 pandemic. Consistent with this aim, a semantic content analysis was conducted on 3562 peer-reviewed journal articles published since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, using the N-gram model and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling approach. Findings of the study revealed the high-frequency bigrams such as "online learn ", "online education ", "online teach " and "distance learn ", as well as trigrams such as "higher education institution ", "emergency remote teach ", "education online learn " and "online teach learn ". Moreover, the LDA topic modeling analysis revealed 42 topics. The topics of "Learning Needs ", "Higher Education " and "Social Impact " respectively were the most focused topics. These topics also revealed concepts, dimensions, methods, tools, technologies, applications, measurement and evaluation models, which are the focal points of e-learning field during the pandemic. The findings of the study are expected to provide insights to researchers and future studies.

    Deep Learning-Based Vehicle Classification for Low Quality Images

    This study proposes a simple convolutional neural network (CNN)-based model for vehicle classification in low resolution surveillance images collected by a standard security camera installed distant from a traffic scene. In order to evaluate its effectiveness, the proposed model is tested on a new dataset containing tiny (100 x 100 pixels) and low resolution (96 dpi) vehicle images. The proposed model is then compared with well-known VGG16-based CNN models in terms of accuracy and complexity. Results indicate that although the well-known models provide higher accuracy, the proposed method offers an acceptable accuracy (92.9%) as well as a simple and lightweight solution for vehicle classification in low quality images. Thus, it is believed that this study might provide useful perception and understanding for further research on the use of standard low-cost cameras to enhance the ability of the intelligent systems such as intelligent transportation system applications.

    Design and Optimization of Piezoelectric-Powered Portable Uv-Led Water Disinfection System

    Due to the environmental pollution threatening human life, clean water accessibility is one of the major global issues. In this context, in literature, there are many portable water disinfection systems utilizing ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV water disinfection systems employ piezoelectric-based electric power along with UV light-emitting diode (LED) sources. This paper elaborates on the detailed design and parametric optimization of a portable UV disinfection system. The proposed system aims to generate piezoelectric harvesting-based electrical power simply by shaking, and the generated power is then used to supply UV-LEDs for water disinfection. To this end, overall system parameters along with a physical-mathematical model of mechanical, electrical and biochemical aspects of the system are fully developed. Moreover, the main design parameters of the developed model are derived for optimal operation of the system by employing Genetic Algorithm (GA). Finally, optimal design parameters were identified for three different cost scenarios. The model can further be improved for practical implementation and mass production of the system.

    Digital Transformation Strategies, Practices, and Trends: a Large-Scale Retrospective Study Based on Machine Learning

    The purpose of this research is to identify the areas of interest, research topics, and application areas that reflect the research nature of digital transformation (DT), as well as the strategies, practices, and trends of DT. To accomplish this, the Latent Dirichlet allocation algorithm, a probabilistic topic modeling technique, was applied to 5350 peer-reviewed journal articles on DT published in the last ten years, from 2013 to 2022. The analysis resulted in the discovery of 34 topics. These topics were classified, and a systematic taxonomy for DT was presented, including four sub-categories: implementation, technology, process, and human. As a result of time-based trend analysis, "Sustainable Energy", "DT in Health", "E-Government", "DT in Education", and "Supply Chain" emerged as top topics with an increasing trend. Our findings indicate that research interests are focused on specific applications of digital transformation in industrial and public settings. Based on our findings, we anticipate that the next phase of DT research and practice will concentrate on specific DT applications in government, health, education, and economics. "Sustainable Energy" and "Supply Chain" have been identified as the most prominent topics in current DT processes and applications. This study can help researchers and practitioners in the field by providing insights and implications about the evolution and applications of DT. Our findings are intended to serve as a guide for DT in understanding current research gaps and potential future research topics.

    Indoor Propagation Analysis of Iqrf Technology for Smart Building Applications

    Owing to its efficiency in the Internet of Things (IoT) applications in terms of low-power connectivity, IQRF (Intelligent Connectivity using Radio Frequency) technology appears to be one of the most reasonable IoT technologies in the commercial market. To realize emerging smart building applications using IQRF, it is necessary to study the propagation characteristics of IQRF technology in indoor environments. In this study, preliminary propagation measurements are conducted using IQRF transceivers that operate on the 868 MHz band in a peer-to-peer (P2P) configured system. The measurements are conducted both in a single corridor of a building in a Line-of-Sight (LoS) link and two perpendicular corridors in a Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) with one single knife-edge link. Moreover, the measured path loss values are compared with the predicted path loss values in order to comparatively assess the prediction accuracy of the well-known empirical models, such as log-distance, ITU, and WINNER II. According to the results, it is concluded that the ITU-1 path loss model agrees well with the measurements and could be used in the planning of an IQRF network deployment in a typical LoS corridor environment. For NLoS corridors, both ITU-3 and WINNERII-2 models could be used due to their higher prediction accuracy. We expect that the initial results achieved in this study could open new perspectives for future research on the development of smart building applications.

    Internet-Of Smart Transportation Systems for Safer Roads

    From the beginning of civilizations, transportation has been one of the most important requirements for humans. Over the years, it has been evolved to modern transportation systems such as road, train, and air transportation. With the development of technology, intelligent transportation systems have been enriched with Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Nowadays, smart city concept that integrates ICT and Internet-of-Things (IoT) have been appeared to optimize the efficiency of city operations and services. Recently, several IoT-based smart applications for smart cities have been developed. Among these applications, smart services for transportation are highly required to ease the issues especially regarding to road safety. In this context, this study presents a literature review that elaborates the existing IoT-based smart transportation systems especially in terms of road safety. In this way, the current state of IoT-based smart transportation systems for safer roads are provided. Then, the current research efforts undertaken by the authors to provide an IoT-based safe smart traffic system are briefly introduced. It is emphasized that road safety can be improved using Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V21) communication technologies via the cloud (Infrastructure-to-Cloud - I2C). Therefore, it is believed that this study offers useful information to researchers for developing safer roads in smart cities.

    Lpwan Cyber Security Risk Analysis: Building a Secure Iqrf Solution

    Low-power wide area network (LPWAN) technologies such as IQRF are becoming increasingly popular for a variety of Internet of Things (IoT) applications, including smart cities, industrial control, and home automation. However, LPWANs are vulnerable to cyber attacks that can disrupt the normal operation of the network or compromise sensitive information. Therefore, analyzing cybersecurity risks before deploying an LPWAN is essential, as it helps identify potential vulnerabilities and threats as well as allowing for proactive measures to be taken to secure the network and protect against potential attacks. In this paper, a security risk analysis of IQRF technology is conducted utilizing the failure mode effects analysis (FMEA) method. The results of this study indicate that the highest risk corresponds to four failure modes, namely compromised end nodes, a compromised coordinator, a compromised gateway and a compromised communication between nodes. Moreover, through this methodology, a qualitative risk evaluation is performed to identify potential security threats in the IQRF network and propose countermeasures to mitigate the risk of cyber attacks on IQRF networks.

    Mobile Application Software Requirements Specification From Consumption Values

    In today's society, mobile applications are becoming more popular and providing several advantages. However, users will resist using a product regardless of how well-tested or solid it is if the wrong requirements are implemented. Understanding the factors that influence the purchase of mobile applications can provide useful information for mobile application design and development. Hence, the purpose of this research is to better understand the impact of consumption values on customers in order to identify the software requirements for a mobile application. This study analyzes the possible behavioral changes of similar groups of university students in a five-year period. For this purpose, a questionnaire is administered to engineering faculty students in 2017 (46 females and 66 males) and 2021 (45 females and 90 males) to better understand customer behavioral changes. The findings highlight the significance of conditional value in customer behavior when purchasing mobile applications. Even though the other consumption values were found to have a negligible effect, there is some evidence indicating that the impact of consumption values on different target customer groups may vary considering their gender and familiarity with apps. Further research needs to be conducted to better understand the possible impact of age, cultural differences, education levels, and special considerations such as visually impaired people. Therefore, this study encourages mobile application designers and developers to raise awareness for the effect of consumption values such as conditional value on their customers' mobile application purchasing behaviors. The possible impact of the consumption values needs to be deeply understood, specifically for the target customer groups, and it should be considered in the software requirements specification (SRS), which is one of the important principles that allow software under consideration for development to function. As a result, a better understanding of consumption values will help developers design and develop better applications by specifying software requirements and marketing strategies.

    Propagation Measurements for Iqrf Network in an Urban Environment

    Recently, IQRF has emerged as a promising technology for the Internet of Things (IoT), owing to its ability to support short- and medium-range low-power communications. However, real world deployment of IQRF-based wireless sensor networks (WSNs) requires accurate path loss modelling to estimate network coverage and other performances. In the existing literature, extensive research on propagation modelling for IQRF network deployment in urban environments has not been provided yet. Therefore, this study proposes an empirical path loss model for the deployment of IQRF networks in a peer-to-peer configured system where the IQRF sensor nodes operate in the 868 MHz band. For this purpose, extensive measurement campaigns are conducted outdoor in an urban environment for Line-of-Sight (LoS) and Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) links. Furthermore, in order to evaluate the prediction accuracy of well-known empirical path loss models for urban environments, the measurements are compared with the predicted path loss values. The results show that the COST-231 Walfisch-Ikegami model has higher prediction accuracy and can be used for IQRF network planning in LoS links, while the COST-231 Hata model has better accuracy in NLoS links. On the other hand, the effects of antennas on the performance of IQRF transceivers (TRs) for LoS and NLoS links are also scrutinized. The use of IQRF TRs with a Straight-Line Dipole Antenna (SLDA) antenna is found to offer more stable results when compared to IQRF (TRs) with Meander Line Antenna (MLA) antenna. Therefore, it is believed that the findings presented in this article could offer useful insights for researchers interested in the development of IoT-based smart city applications.

    A Radio Frequency Fingerprinting-Based Aircraft Identification Method Using Ads-B Transmissions

    The automatic dependent surveillance broadcast (ADS-B) system is one of the key components of the next generation air transportation system (NextGen). ADS-B messages are transmitted in unencrypted plain text. This, however, causes significant security vulnerabilities, leaving the system open to various types of wireless attacks. In particular, the attacks can be intensified by simple hardware, like a software-defined radio (SDR). In order to provide high security against such attacks, radio frequency fingerprinting (RFF) approaches offer reasonable solutions. In this study, an RFF method is proposed for aircraft identification based on ADS-B transmissions. Initially, 3480 ADS-B samples were collected by an SDR from eight aircrafts. The power spectral density (PSD) features were then extracted from the filtered and normalized samples. Furthermore, the support vector machine (SVM) with three kernels (linear, polynomial, and radial basis function) was used to identify the aircraft. Moreover, the classification accuracy was demonstrated via varying channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels (10-30 dB). With a minimum accuracy of 92% achieved at lower SNR levels (10 dB), the proposed method based on SVM with a polynomial kernel offers an acceptable performance. The promising performance achieved with even a small dataset also suggests that the proposed method is implementable in real-world applications.

    A Simple Propagation Model To Characterize the Effects of Multiple Human Bodies Blocking Indoor Short-Range Links at 28 Ghz

    This study aims to provide a simple approach to characterize the effects of scattering by human bodies in the vicinity of a short-range indoor link at 28 GHz while the link is fully blocked by another body. In the study, a street canyon propagation characterized by a four-ray model is incorporated to consider the human bodies. For this model, the received signal is assumed to be composed of a direct component that is exposed to shadowing due to a human body blocking the link and a multipath component due to reflections from human bodies around the link. In order to predict the attenuation due to shadowing, the double knife-edge diffraction (DKED) model is employed. Moreover, to predict the attenuation due to multipath, the reflected fields from the human bodies around the link are used. The measurements are compared with the simulations in order to evaluate the prediction accuracy of the model. The acceptable results achieved in this study suggest that this simple model might work correctly for short-range indoor links at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies.

    A Simplified Method Based on Rssi Fingerprinting for Iot Device Localization in Smart Cities

    The Internet of Things (IoT) has significantly improved location-based services in smart cities, such as automated public transportation and traffic management. Estimating the location of connected devices is a critical problem. Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technologies are used for localization due to their low power consumption and long communication range. Recent advances in Machine Learning have made Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) fingerprinting with LPWAN technologies effective. However, this requires a connection between devices and gateways or base stations, which can increase network deployment, maintenance, and installation costs. This study proposes a cost-effective RSSI fingerprinting solution using IQRF technology for IoT device localization. The region of interest is divided into grids to provide training locations, and measurements are conducted to create a training dataset containing RSSI fingerprints. Pattern matching is performed to localize the device by comparing the fingerprint of the end device with the fingerprints in the created database. To evaluate the efficiency of the proposed solution, measurements were conducted in a short-range local area ( $80\times 30$ m) at 868 MHz. In the measurements, four IQRF nodes were utilized to receive the RSSIs from a transmitting IQRF node. The performances of well-known ML classifiers on the created dataset are then comparatively assessed in terms of test accuracy, prediction speed, and training time. According to the results, the Bagged Trees classifier demonstrated the highest accuracy with 96.87%. However, with an accuracy of 95.69%, the Weighted k-NN could also be a reasonable option for real-world implementations due to its faster prediction speed (37615 obs/s) and lower training time (28.1 s). To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first attempt to explore the feasibility of the IQRF networks to develop a RSSI fingerprinting-based IoT device localization in the literature. The promising results suggest that the proposed method could be used as a low-cost alternative for IoT device localization in short-range location-based smart city applications.

    Towards Mmwave Altimetry for Uas: Exploring the Potential of 77 Ghz Automotive Radars

    Precise altitude data are indispensable for flight navigation, particularly during the autonomous landing of unmanned aerial systems (UASs). Conventional light and barometric sensors employed for altitude estimation are limited by poor visibility and temperature conditions, respectively, whilst global positioning system (GPS) receivers provide the altitude from the mean sea level (MSL) marred with a slow update rate. To cater to the landing safety requirements, UASs necessitate precise altitude information above ground level (AGL) impervious to environmental conditions. Radar altimeters, a mainstay in commercial aviation for at least half a century, realize these requirements through minimum operational performance standards (MOPSs). More recently, the proliferation of 5G technology and interference with the universally allocated band for radar altimeters from 4.2 to 4.4 GHz underscores the necessity to explore novel avenues. Notably, there is no dedicated MOPS tailored for radar altimeters of UASs. To gauge the performance of a radar altimeter offering for UASs, existing MOPSs are the de facto choice. Historically, frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radars have been extensively used in a broad spectrum of ranging applications including radar altimeters. Modern monolithic millimeter wave (mmWave) automotive radars, albeit designed for automotive applications, also employ FMCW for precise ranging with a cost-effective and compact footprint. Given the technology maturation with excellent size, weight, and power (SWaP) metrics, there is a growing trend in industry and academia to explore their efficacy beyond the realm of the automotive industry. To this end, their feasibility for UAS altimetry remains largely untapped. While the literature on theoretical discourse is prevalent, a specific focus on mmWave radar altimetry is lacking. Moreover, clutter estimation with hardware specifications of a pure look-down mmWave radar is unreported. This article argues the applicability of MOPSs for commercial aviation for adaptation to a UAS use case. The theme of the work is a tutorial based on a simplified mathematical and theoretical discussion on the understanding of performance metrics and inherent intricacies. A systems engineering approach for deriving waveform specifications from operational requirements of a UAS is offered. Lastly, proposed future research directions and insights are included.

    Use of the Iqrf Technology in Internet-Of Smart Cities

    In recent years, there has been a growing interest in building smart cities based on the Internet of Things (IoT) technology. However, selecting a low-cost IoT wireless technology that enables low-power connectivity remains one of the key challenges in integrating IoT to smart cities. In this context, the IQRF technology offers promising opportunities to provide cost-effective solutions. Yet, in the literature, there are limited studies on utilizing IQRF technology for smart city applications. Therefore, this study is aimed at increasing the awareness about the use of IQRF technology in IoT-based smart city development. For this purpose, a review of smart city architectures along with challenges/requirements in adopting IoT for smart cities is provided. Then, some of the common cost-effective IoT wireless technologies that enable low-power consumption are briefly presented. Next, the benefits of IQRF technology over other technologies are discussed by making theoretical comparisons based on technical documentations and reports. Moreover, the research efforts currently being undertaken by the authors as a part of ongoing project on the development of IoT-based smart city system in Gj & x00F8;vik Municipality, Norway, are conceptually introduced. Finally, the future research directions are addressed.
