Drawing the Big Picture of Games in Education: a Topic Modeling-Based Review of Past 55 Years
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2023) Ekin, Cansu C.; Polat, Elif; Hopcan, Sinan
The literature of games in education has a rich and multidisciplinary content. Due to the large number of studies in the field, it is not easy to analyze all relevant studies. There are few studies exploring the big picture of research trends in the field. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to examine longitudinal trends of game-based research in education using text mining tech-niques. 4980 publications were retrieved as an experimental dataset indexed by the SCOPUS database in the period 1968 to mid-2021. The results include descriptive statistics of game-based research, trends of the research topics, and trends in the frequency of each topic over time. They show that the number of studies focusing on the use of games in education has increased, particularly since the 2000s when Internet use accelerated and became widespread. Approxi-mately 70% of all the studies were conducted in the last 10 years. One third of the studies is related to the main topic of game-based learning. It is significant that in the last three decades the topic of serious games has been among the top three trends. Considering usage acceleration of the topics, the highest values belong to game-based learning, serious games and student science games, in that order. The findings of this study are expected to guide the field by providing a better understanding of the trends of games in education and offer a direction for future research.

Artificial Intelligence in Education: a Text Mining-Based Review of the Past 56 Years
    (Springer, 2025) Ekin, C.C.; Cantekin, Ö.F.; Polat, E.; Hopcan, S.
Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) is a broad and multifarious area of study that spans across various academic fields. Due to the high numbers of studies in this field, it seems too challenging to analyze all of them in depth in a single study. Additionally, there is a lack of research that provides a comprehensive overview of the main trends and topics in AIED. This study, hence, aims to fill this gap by using text mining techniques to examine how artificial intelligence (AI)-related research in education has evolved over time. To this end, a total of 11,027 articles indexed by the Scopus database in the field of education between 1967 and 2023 were examined. Based on the findings, there has been a significant increase in AIED since 2014, covering 73% of the publications. Over the past three decades, AIED research has increasingly concentrated on engineering student populations and conference proceedings. Notably, AI solutions are extensively employed in education, with a strong focus on personalization, assessment, and evaluation. They also play a prominent role in research review processes, such as text mining and topic modeling for summarizing research findings. The findings contribute to the field, enhancing our understanding of the patterns of AI’s integration into education and offering guidance for prospective research endeavors. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

On Profust Reliability of Coherent Systems: Signature-Based Expressions
(Sage Publications Ltd, 2013) Eryilmaz, Serkan; Rouyendegh, Babak Daneshvar
In this article we study profust reliability of non-repairable coherent systems through the concept of system signature. We obtain explicit expressions for the profust reliability and mean time to fuzzy failure of coherent systems. We compute and present mean time to failure and mean time to fuzzy failure of all coherent systems with three and four components. Finally, we illustrate the results for a well known class of coherent systems called m-consecutive-k-out-of-n:F.

(Acad Conferences Ltd, 2012) ictenbas, Burcu Devrim; Rouyendegh, Babak Daneshvar
eCommerce has become an essential part of business strategy in the rising (emerging) global economy. In order to be successful in the eCommerce marketplace, organizations will need to provide high quality websites that attract and retain users. It is a need to understand and evaluate eCommerce websites to achieve high quality. Evaluation of eCommerce websites is a multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) problem since it includes analysis of both qualitative and quantitative factors. Also human judgment has taken part in this process. This paper presents FAHP to evaluate three eCommerce websites. The results will be a guide for decision makers in terms of improvable areas to design eCommerce websites.

Development of Decision Support Model for Selecting a Maintenance Plan Using a Fuzzy Mcdm Approach: a Theoretical Framework
(Hindawi Ltd, 2018) Abdulgader, Fathia Sghayer; Eid, Rajeh; Rouyendegh (B Erdebilli), Babak Daneshvar; Rouyendegh , Babak Daneshvar
In complex decision making, using multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methodologies is the most scientific way to ensure an informed and justified decision between several alternatives. MCDMs have been used in different ways and with several applications that proved their efficiency in achieving this goal. In this research, the advantages and disadvantages of the different MCDM methodologies are studied, along with the different techniques implemented to increase their accuracy and precision. The main aim of the study is to develop a hybrid MCDM process that combines the strengths of several MCDM methods and apply it to choose the best fit maintenance policy/strategy for industrial application. Moreover, fuzzy linguistic terms are utilized in all of the used MCDM techniques in order to eliminate the uncertainty and ambiguity of the results. Through an extensive literature review performed on studies that have used MCDM methods in a hybrid context and using fuzzy linguistic terms, a model is developed to use fuzzy DEMATEL-AHP-TOPSIS hybrid technique. The model with its application is the first of its kind, which combines the strengths of fuzzy DEMATEL in establishing interrelationships between several criteria, as well as performing a pairwise comparison between the criteria for prioritization using the fuzzy AHP method. Thereafter, the alternatives are compared using fuzzy TOPSIS method by establishing negative and positive solutions and calculating the relative closeness for each of the alternatives. Furthermore, six main criteria, twenty criteria, and five alternatives are selected from the literature for the model application.

(Ieee, 2018) Tirkes, Guzin; Ekin, Cansu Cigdem; Sengul, Gokhan; Bostan, Atila; Karakaya, Murat
Deep Learning (DL) is an interesting and rapidly developing field of research which has been currently utilized as a part of industry and in many disciplines to address a wide range of problems, from image classification, computer vision, video games, bioinformatics, and handwriting recognition to machine translation. The starting point of this study is the recognition of a big gap between the sector need of specialists in DL technology and the lack of sufficient education provided by the universities. Higher education institutions are the best environment to provide this expertise to the students. However, currently most universities do not provide specifically designed DL courses to their students. Thus, the main objective of this study is to design a novel curriculum including two courses to facilitate teaching and learning of DL topic. The proposed curriculum will enable students to solve real-world problems by applying DL approaches and gain necessary background to adapt their knowledge to more advanced, industry-specific fields.

How Assessment System of an Open Source Learning Management System Can Be Integrated To a Remote Laboratory Application? Problems and Solutions
(Ieee, 2007) Aydin, Cansu Cigdem; Cagiltay, Nergiz Ercil
Most of the education programs need an assessment system for formative and summative evaluation purposes. Similarly, in the ERRL* project which is a distance remote radio frequency laboratory application, assessment system is required. However, developing an assessment system cost is very high and requires some extra time for testing and development purposes. Open source systems provide these services in a standard way. Since the source is open, it is possible to make some modifications to better adapt these systems to the requirements of developed systems. Similarly, in the Moodle part of the system we need to integrate the test and the experiment platforms. hi order to better guide the learners in the system, they should take some tests about the devices and the theoretical content included in the system. It is important to prevent users Who do not have the enough knowledge directed to the experiments platform. These testing requirements should be integrated into the remote laboratory system, so that, the learners should not need to jump between different systems and interfaces. This article presents implementation process of open source Learning Management System software's assessment module to a remote laboratory application and it also discusses the advantages, disadvantages of using an open source Web based assessment system.

    (Ieee, 2008) Aydin, C. C.; Turkmen, G.; Ozyurt, E.; Aydin, E. U.; Cagiltay, N. E.; Ozbek, M. E.; Kara, A.
In the last decade, the effect of internet usage in education is gradually increased. When we look from academic perspective, the new technologies provided alternatives for students learning. As distance education becomes important everyday, the indispensable elements of teaching and education, laboratories must be reachable via remote connection. Consequently, the education that is going to be given to the students will be more flexible with respect to place and time constraints and students can reach laboratory facilities at any time and anywhere not only in lectures and practical hours. In this study, European Remote Radio Laboratory (ERRL) which is a distance remote Radio Frequency (RF) laboratory designed for electrical-electronics students, is described generally. The software architecture, infrastructure and experiment that can be done with a remote connection have been described.
