| dc.description.sponsorship | The First International Conference on “Tourism and The Third Sector“ was held in Neuchatel, the beautiful historic lakeside city of Switzerland, on 18-20 September 2009. The third sector is constituted by not-for-profit and non-governmental organizations, together with the activities of volunteering and giving which sustain them. These organizations are a major component of many industries including community health services, rural, education, housing, sport and recreation, culture, and finance. The third sector has a voice in almost every country and plays a significant role in development. The aim of this conference was to bring together representatives from a diverse range of organizations including those from the third sector, public authorities, policy makers, industry and community representatives, tourism researchers and others, who recognize the potential for positive outcomes in the Tourism and Third Sector interactions. The conference was organized by The Educational Travel Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, which supports individuals and communities in least-developed countries to maximize their potential to benefit from tourism development by funding educational travel and acting as a source of support in order to ensure the acquisition of relevant knowledge and skills. Around 30 colleagues from United Kingdom, Switzerland, Turkey, United States, Portugal, Malaysia, Ghana, and Taiwan have taken part in the conference. The discussion was centered around six major themes: “Governance, Participation and Exclusion”, “Conservation, Sustainability and Partnership”, “Culture and Representation”, “Delivering the Visitor Experience”, “Social Entrepreneurship”, and “Education and Training”. The conference started with a welcome message and opening remarks by Dr. William Feigh-ery, director of the Educational Travel Foundation. There were three keynote speakers: Professor Harold Goodwin from International Centre for Responsible Tourism, Leeds Metropolitan University; Dr. David Souden head of Access and Learning at Historic Royal Places, UK; and Dr. Peter Slowe, founder and director of Projects Abroad Group. | |
