Article Citation - WoS: 3Spatial Econometric Analysis of R&d Spillovers in Turkey(Journal Applied Economics & Business Research, 2016) Cetin, Dilek; Kalayci, ElifResearch and development (R&D) activities are of great significance in the long term development of firms and R&D expenditures have been studied by economists including Romer. This paper sets out to investigate the effects of R&D spillovers at provincial level with specific reference to Turkey. To serve this purpose, data published by Turkish Statistical Institute have been employed. The paper covers the period from 2003 to 2007. The number of data points is 342 subsequent to the aggregation of data at the firm level. Of the data aggregated, it has been found out that 162 of them are zero. While running the spatial econometric estimations, inverse distance and neighboring matrices were employed as the weighting matrix. The determinants of R&D activities employed in the study are size, represented by the number of employees; qualified labor, represented by the number of R&D employees; technology transfer represented by expenses for licensing; foreign ownership, Pavitt sector dummies, location dummies by the sea, border or airport. The results of the analyses suggest that when both weighting matrices are used, spatial lag and error yielded significant results. There is R&D knowledge spillovers at provincial level in Turkey, shown by the spatial spillover effects in nearly one third of the total effects.Article Citation - WoS: 4Europeanization of Turkey and LGBTI Rights(Ankara Univ European Union Research Centre, 2020) Yilmaz, GozdeThe European Union (EU) has established an advanced regime for non-discrimination and LGBTI rights have been included within this regime. EU candidate states are expected to be a part of this regime and launch Europeanizing reforms in the area. While, as an EU candidate state, Turkey is not immune from this, LGBTI rights have remained an area without any reform in the 2000s and even an area full with discrimination experiences. This article examines why there emerged no reforms during the increasing Europeanizing reforms in Turkey in the 2000s. Bu değişimler toplumsal yapıları sadece biçimsel olarak değil aynı zamanda içeriksel olarak da derinden etkilemiştir. En fazla etkilenen yapılardan biri de medyadır. Özellikle bu anlamda yeni medya platformlarının yanı sıra, büyük ölçekli bilgi ve enformasyon depoları, arama motorları ve benzeri veri ağları örnek gösterilebilir. “Büyük veri” kavramı bu şekilde dünya çapında fenomen bir kavram haline gelmiştir. Kavramı anlamak ve bu sistemden etkili yararlanabilmek için çok sayıda araştırma yürütülmektedir. Medya ve iletişim çalışmalarında ise büyük veri etkili veri kullanımı ve karmaşık bilgi ağlarının yorumlanması çerçevesinde ele alınmaktadır. Özellikle gazetecilik alanında büyük veri 2000’li yıllardan itibaren önemli araştırma konularından biri haline gelmiştir. “Veri gazeteciliği” önemli bir iletişim alanına dönüşmektedir. Bu çalışma, Türkiye’de de yeni bir kavram ve alan olan veri gazeteciliğinin nasıl kavramsallaştırıldığını ele almaktadır. Amaçsal örneklem kapsamında konu ile ilgili ulaşılan çalışmalar içerik analizi ile incelenmiştir. This study uses an undergraduate sample from Turkey to explore this relation for a relatively understudied population. Given findings that link basic human values to narcissism and to political orientation, we also investigate the possibility of a mediating role for human values in this relation. Leftwing orientation is weakly and negatively correlated with narcissism and with narcissism's self-sufficiency dimension. In multinomial logistic regression, we find that the odds of placing oneself in the extreme right position verses moderate left position increases as narcissism increases. The effect of narcissism on political orientation appears fragile, however, when this relation is controlled for self-esteem, sex, and human values. Among Schwartz's basic human values, tradition turns out to be a stronger predictor of political orientation than narcissism and mediation is supported only for the values tradition and universalism.
