Article Blockchain Integration for Circular Economy Adoption in Steel Construction(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2026-02-25) Bilgin, Gozde; Birgonul, M. Talat; Akcay, Emre Caner; Dikmen, Irem; Demir, BerkanPurposeThe circular economy (CE) is an economic model aimed at minimizing waste and optimizing resource use by extending lifecycles through recycling, reuse, and other strategies. This shift from the traditional linear model (take-make-dispose) is crucial for a more sustainable and resilient built environment. Given its environmental impact, the steel construction industry holds significant importance in driving sustainability and CE efforts. This study aims to explore the potential of a blockchain(BC)-based framework to overcome barriers hindering the adoption of CE principles within the industrial steel construction sector, thereby promoting sustainability and circularity in the built environment.Design/methodology/approachA conceptual BC framework is proposed to enable effective recording, storing, and sharing of process-related data among stakeholders throughout the lifecycle of construction materials. The framework's validity is assessed through a focus group study conducted at a steel construction company, involving expert evaluations.FindingsExpert evaluations indicate that the BC-based framework can significantly enhance CE adoption by improving information flow, raising awareness, and fostering collaboration among ecosystem participants.Originality/valueThe study introduces an innovative application of BC technology tailored for the steel construction sector to address specific CE barriers, offering a novel approach that facilitates digital and sustainability transitions.Book Part The Intellectual Structure of Academic Studies on Blue-Collar Workers(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2023-05-09) Asbas, Caner; Tuzlukaya, Sule; Eroglu, Halil; Kirkbesoglu, ErdemThe main purpose of the study is to examine the intellectual structure of academic studies on blue-collar workers. Evidence From 35 Countries Based on Globe Framework(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2025-05-29) Turek, D.; Wojtczuk-Turek, A.; Edgar, F.; Podgorodnichenko, N.; Okay-Somerville, B.; Fu, N.; Zhang, G.Purpose: The article discusses the relationships between sustainable HRM and organizational identification, conceptualized at the individual level, and the moderating role of cultural dimensions conceptualized at the country level (described in GLOBE’s framework). The study’s theoretical model based on social exchange theory proposes that sustainable HRM practice increases organizational identification. However, the strength of this identification depends on the dimensions of national culture. Thus, we assumed national culture functions as a second-level moderator in the relationship between sustainable HRM and organizational identification. Design/methodology/approach: We conducted the study with data from 10,421 employees across 35 countries. We used a multilevel modeling approach for data analysis. Findings: The study revealed the cross-level interaction effects of national culture on the relationship between sustainable HRM practice and organizational identification. Specifically, the results indicate that sustainable HRM strengthens employees’ organizational identification more in cultures with higher levels of gender egalitarianism and lower levels of humane orientation. Originality/value: This study demonstrates that the relationship between sustainable HRM practices and employees’ organizational identification is culturally sensitive. It highlights the need to consider cultural context when assessing the impact of sustainable HRM practices on employee outcomes. Furthermore, it shows that certain cultural dimensions can enhance the effect of sustainable HRM practices. © 2025, Emerald Publishing Limited.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Kavaklidere-Ankara: the Formation of a Residential District During the 1950s(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2015) Resuloglu, Cilga; Ergut, Elvan Altan; Interior Architecture and Environmental DesignThis paper aims to examine the formation of Kayak Were as a 'modern' residential district during the 1950s. Contemporary urbanization brought about changes in various regions of Ankara, among which Kavaklidere emerged as an important location with features that defined a new stage in the development of the identity of the capital city. The construction of houses in this district from the early 1950s onwards was in accordance with new functional requirements resulting from the needs of the contemporary socio-economic context, and exemplified the relationship between architectural approaches and social developments. In line with the rapid urbanization of Ankara throughout the 1950s, daily life in Kavaklidere was transformed, as experienced in the apartment blocks that were the newly constructed sites of modernization. The contemporary transformation of Kavaklidere was apparently formal and spatial, with the modernist architectural approach of the period, i.e. the so-called International Style, beginning to dominate in the shaping of its changing character. Nonetheless, the transformation was not only architectural but also social: the characteristics of this part of the city were then defined by structures like these apartment blocks, which brought modernist design features, together with modern ways of living, into wider public use and appreciation. The paper discusses how the identity of Kavaklidere as a residential district was formed in the context of the mid-twentieth century, when these new residences emerged as pioneering modernist architectural housing, the product of social change, which housed and hence facilitated the 'modern' lifestyle of that time.Book Part Citation - WoS: 4Social Aspects of Tourism Atmosphere and Emotional Contagion in Destinations(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2019-11-29) Kucukergin, Kemal Gurkan; Dedeoglu, Bekir BoraIn this chapter, emotional interactions between tourists and the individuals they are potentially in interaction with are examined within the scope of social aspects of tourism atmosphere. Emotional interactions were analysed under the framework of emotional contagion. Regardless of whether the fact that emotional contagion occurs in non-conscious or conscious way, tourists are open to emotional cues to come from other individuals. Emotions of other individuals can influence tourists' behavioural intentions by shaping their emotions. This chapter suggests a number of propositions, and develops a conceptual model to capture the role of emotional interactions.Article Citation - WoS: 12Citation - Scopus: 20A Hybrid Approach for Predicting Customers' Individual Purchase Behavior(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2017-11-06) Peker, Serhat; Kocyigit, Altan; Eren, P. ErhanPurpose - Predicting customers' purchase behaviors is a challenging task. The literature has introduced the individual-level and the segment-based predictive modeling approaches for this purpose. Each method has its own advantages and drawbacks, and performs in certain cases. The purpose of this paper is to propose a hybrid approach which predicts customers' individual purchase behaviors and reduces the limitations of these two methods by combining the advantages of them. Design/methodology/approach - The proposed hybrid approach is established based on individual-level and segment-based approaches and utilizes the historical transactional data and predictive algorithms to generate predictions. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is experimentally evaluated in the domain of supermarket shopping by using real-world data and using five popular machine learning classification algorithms including logistic regression, decision trees, support vector machines, neural networks and random forests. Findings - A comparison of results shows that the proposed hybrid approach substantially outperforms the individual-level and the segment-based approaches in terms of prediction coverage while maintaining roughly comparable prediction accuracy to the individual-level method. Moreover, the experimental results demonstrate that logistic regression performs better than the other classifiers in predicting customer purchase behavior. Practical implications - The study concludes that the proposed approach would be beneficial for enterprises in terms of designing customized services and one-to-one marketing strategies. Originality/value - This study is the first attempt to adopt a hybrid approach combining individual-level and segment-based approaches to predict customers' individual purchase behaviors.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 16The Effects of Workstation Partition Heights on Employees' Perceptions in Open-Plan Of?ces(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2019-05-13) Yildirim, Kemal; Gunes, Elif; Yilmaz, Gulcan PervanPurpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the effects of environmental factors in open-plan offices with the same characteristics but with different workstation partition heights (1.10, 1.40 and 1.65 m) on perceptual evaluations of office employees. Design/methodology/approach In this research, the effects of environmental factors on employees' perceptual evaluations in open-plan offices at the Golbasi Region of Ankara were measured with a detailed questionnaire. The research data were obtained from 81 employees who agreed to fill out the questionnaire and who use open-plan offices. Findings It was found that the office environments with 1.65 m workstation partition heights were more favorably assessed for each of the items of planning and of privacy that form the dependent variables compared to the office environments with 1.10 and 1.40 m partition heights. On the other hand, the office environments with the 1.10 and 1.40 m partition heights were more favorable for lighting items than the 1.65 m partition height office environments. In addition, young employees had a more positive tendency toward the perceptions of environmental factors, including different workstation partition heights in open-plan offices, compared to older employees. Originality/value The significant contribution of this research is that it provides valid data and makes a valuable contribution to the body of knowledge in open-plan office design.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 6Effects of Window Proximity on Perceptions of Employees in the Call Center Offices(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2020-03-16) Yildirim, Kemal; Ozkan, Aysen; Gunes, Elif; Mestan, AhmetPurpose The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of window proximity on perceptions of employees in the call center offices. Design/methodology/approach A semantic differential scale composed of nine bipolar adjectives, four of which dealt with "planning," three of "privacy," while the rest measured "lighting" was applied for evaluation. In total, 92 employees at the TEPE Call Center in the Bilkent District, Ankara, Turkey participated in the research. Findings The results showed that window proximity directly affected the call center employees' perceptions. In addition, a positive approach was even less affected when the location of the workstation was more at the inner part of the workspace. On the contrary, workstations in front of the window were evaluated more positively, presumably because the employees were happy at feeling roomy and by giving them a higher level of privacy, while also minimizing distractions and interruptions. It was also found that call center employees with secondary education responded more positively than higher educated employees. Originality/value This study presents suggestions that would be useful for increasing the working and solution-focused perceptual performance values in call center environments from the new generation of work areas. They should be appropriate for the psychological and physical needs of employees in twenty-first-century communication environments, especially in spatial environments and for the suitability of the technological equipment used.Article Citation - WoS: 12Citation - Scopus: 19Prospects of Ocean-Based Renewable Energy for West Africa's Sustainable Energy Future(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2020-03-16) Adesanya, Ayokunle; Misra, Sanjay; Maskeliunas, Rytis; Damasevicius, RobertasPurpose The limited supply of fossil fuels, constant rise in the demand of energy and the importance of reducing greenhouse emissions have brought the adoption of renewable energy sources for generation of electrical power. One of these sources that has the potential to supply the world's energy needs is the ocean. Currently, ocean in West African region is mostly utilized for the extraction of oil and gas from the continental shelf. However, this resource is depleting, and the adaptation of ocean energy could be of major importance. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the possibilities of ocean-based renewable energy (OBRE) and analyze the economic impact of adapting an ocean energy using a thermal gradient (OTEC) approach for energy generation. Design/methodology/approach The analysis is conducted from the perspective of cost, energy security and environmental protection. Findings This study shows that adapting ocean energy in the West Africa region can significantly produce the energy needed to match the rising energy demands for sustainable development of Nigeria. Although the transition toward using OBRE will incur high capital cost at the initial stage, eventually, it will lead to a cost-effective generation, transmission, environmental improvement and stable energy supply to match demand when compared with the conventional mode of generation in West Africa. Originality/value The study will contribute toward analysis of the opportunities for adopting renewable energy sources and increasing energy sustainability for the West Africa coast regions.Article Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 13The Effects of Indoor Plants on Customers' Shopping Decisions in a Restaurant Environment(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2020-07-14) Yildirim, Kemal; Yildirim Kaya, Nazli Nazende; Olmus, FerdiPurpose The purpose of this paper is to focus on the effects of indoor plants on customers' shopping decisions in the restaurant environment. Design/methodology/approach The assumption of the research is that there is a relationship between restaurants where indoor plants are used and the customers' shopping decisions (restaurant entry and purchase). A hypothetical study was performed to test this assumption that was based on the digital images of two different restaurants (restaurant with and restaurant without indoor plants) modelled in a virtual environment. The Likert scale questionnaire used in this study was completed by 335 participants. Findings Results indicated that restaurants designed with indoor plants had a more positive effect on the shopping decisions of participants than restaurants designed without indoor plants. The statistically significant results between evaluations of customers and their demographic backgrounds were determined. The male participants with a 26-35 age range showed more positive opinions about the plant designed restaurants than female participants with a 36-55 age range. Also, higher education graduate participants showed more positive opinions about the plant designed restaurant than secondary education graduate participants. Originality/value This paper reveals a significant relationship between restaurant design and shopping decisions. Results of the study suggest that retailers and designers may be able to make easily stores more appealing for customers by designing them with indoor plants.
