Article The Effect Of Constructivist Training On The Rate Of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections in The Intensive Care Unit(Anestezi Dergisi, 2025) Yarimoglu, Saliha; Erdinç, Fatma Şebnem; Kaymak, Çetin; Tulek, Eren, N.; Basa̧r, Hulya; Tuncer-Ertem, Günay,; Kinikli, Sami; Tulek, Necla; Ertem, Gunay TuncerObjective: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CA-UTIs) are common healthcare-associated infections. Constructivist training is based on integrating new knowledge with previously learned knowledge. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of constructivist training on the rate of CA-UTIs in the Anesthesia and Reanimation Intensive Care Units (ARICU). Methods: This study was a retrospective-prospective intervention study. Over the period of one month, a total of 62 healthcare staff (seven doctors, 38 nurses, and 17 cleaning staff) working in ARICUs were organized into groups of 4-5 people and received forty-five minutes of constructivist training on preventing CA-UTI. Personnel from each of three ICUs participated in the same number of training sessions. Comparisons were made of the rates of CA-UTI and catheter use in the six-month periods before and after the training. A 4-item questionnaire was administered to the study participants six months after completion of the training. Results: The catheter-associated urinary tract infection rates before and after training were observed to be 8.3 and 8.7 per 1000 catheter days, respectively in ARICU-1, 7.0 and 8.1 per 1000 catheter days in ARICU-2, and 7.3 and 9.9 per 1000 catheter days in ARICU-3. No statistically significant difference was observed in the CA-UTI rate in each unit after constructivist training compared to the pre-training period. The intervention of constructivist training alone did not reduce the CA-UTI rates in the ICUs. According to the results of the survey conducted six months later, 92% of the nurses and 88% of the cleaning staff stated that constructivist training had positive effects. Conclusion: The intervention of constructivisit training alone did not reduce the rates of CA-UTIs in the ARICUs, but an increase was observed in the awareness of ICU nurses and cleaning staff. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Citation - Scopus: 3Protective Effects of Metformin in Non-Diabetic Rats With Experimentally Induced Lower Extremity Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury(Turkish National Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society, 2025) Küçük, Ayşegül; Dursun, Alı Dogan; Arslan, Mustafa; Sezen, Şaban Cem; Yıldırım, Alperen Kutay; Özer, Abdullah; Demirtas, HuseyinAim: Lower extremity ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury can lead to substantial skeletal muscle damage and systemic complications, primarily driven by oxidative stress and inflammation. In addition to its well-known glucose-lowering effects, metformin possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may confer protection against tissue damage caused by IR. This study aims to evaluate the potential protective effects of metformin on skeletal muscle injury using a rat model of lower extremity IR.Material and Methods: A total of twenty-four male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into four experimental groups: Control (C), Ischemia-Reperfusion (IR), IR with metformin at 4 mg/kg (IR+M4), and IR with metformin at 8 mg/kg (IR+M8). Ischemia was induced by clamping the infrarenal aorta for 45 minutes, followed by a reperfusion period of 120 minutes. In the treatment groups, metformin was administered intraperitoneally at the onset of ischemia. Gastrocnemius muscle tissues were harvested for subsequent histopathological and biochemical evaluations, including measurements of Total Antioxidant Status (TAS), Total Oxidant Status (TOS), and Oxidative Stress Index (OSI).Results: Histopathological analysis demonstrated a significant reduction in muscle atrophy, degeneration, leukocyte infiltration, and fiber fragmentation in the IR+M8 group compared to the IR group. Biochemical assessments showed that TAS levels were considerably elevated, whereas TOS and OSI levels were markedly reduced in the metformin-treated groups, with the most prominent effects observed at the higher dosage of 8 mg/kg.Conclusion: The findings indicate that metformin exerts a dose-dependent protective effect against skeletal muscle injury resulting from lower extremity ischemia-reperfusion in rats. These protective properties are likely due to metformin’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms, highlighting its potential therapeutic value in mitigating IR-induced tissue damage.Article Effects of Topological Structure of Project Network on Computational Cost(Golden Light Publ, 2024) Aminbakhsh, SamanUnderstanding how network complexity affects optimization algorithms is crucial for improving computational efficiency. This study investigates how variations in network complexity impact the performance of optimization algorithms. By examining networks with different serial/parallel indicator (I2) values, the research uncovers several key insights into how topology influences computational requirements. The experiments show that higher I2 values, which are closer to serial configurations, heighten the problem's complexity. This study reveals that networks with lower I2 values, which exhibit steeper time-cost curves with fewer solutions over their efficient frontiers, require significantly more CPU time, indicating that project complexity does not necessarily scale with the extend of the Pareto fronts. This contradicts the expectation that more Pareto front solutions would inherently demand greater computational resources. Lastly, the study highlights that while the number of time-cost realizations is often used to gauge project complexity, it may not be conclusive on its own and that one complexity measure can outperform another. Although it can be an effective indicator, it does not fully capture the computational challenges posed by different network topologies. This study further acknowledges the difficulty in establishing a clear link between project performance and complexity due to the multifaceted nature of the problem. The findings suggest that exploring similar problems in other contexts could provide valuable insights into understanding and managing computational complexity.Article The Occupation of Bursa by the Greek Army During the National Struggle Period(Hacettepe Univ, 2023) Birlik, Gultekin K.One of the aims of the official invasion of Istanbul on 16 March 1920 was to keep the national liberation forces away. Despite this, the national liberation forces attacked the British in Beykoz, Istanbul on 4 July 1920. Considering this Beykoz attack as a major threat, and in order to keep Istanbul and the Straits under control, the British decided on 4 July 1920 that Bursa should be invaded by the Greek forces and to make the invasion easier, Mudanya and Gemlik should be invaded by the British. The aim of the invasion of Bursa was to keep Istanbul and the Straits under control. However, with the propaganda made by the Istanbul government, it was shown to be geared towards the "solution of the public disorder" generated by the national liberation forces. Against the Greek operation that started on 22 June 1920, it was decided that defense should be set up first in the west of Bursa. However, the efficient propaganda against the National War of Independence made by the Istanbul government caused widespread desertions among the soldiers of 56. Division which was supposed to defend Bursa. To the paralysis of the units' operations was added the possibility of blockage of the ways to withdraw due to the invasion of Gemlik and Mudanya by the British, and the defense set up in the west of Bursa ended in failure. To be able to stop the movement of the Greek troops towards Eskisehir, it was necessary toevacuate Bursa and after the evacuation, a local committee was elected to take over the administration of Bursa. As a result of the propaganda, the committee saw the "the problem of public disorder" as the reason for the invasion of Bursa and guaranteeing the reestablishment of the public order, it wanted to take steps in the direction of preventing the invasion. Mustafa Kemal Pasha stopped this committee's attempts to communicate with the British through the French, as he considered these attempts as accepting the hegemony of the British. Bursa, which was under the influence of the Istanbul government as it was too close to Istanbul, could not be defended due to the dissolution of the units as a result of desertions, and was invaded by the Greek forces on 8 July 1920.Article Citation - Scopus: 9The Effects of Eryngium Campestre Extracts on Glutathione-S Glutathione Peroxidase and Catalase Enzyme Activities;(Turkish Pharmacists Association, 2014) Güneş,M.G.; İşgör,B.S.; İşgör,Y.G.; Shomali Moghaddam,N.; Geven,F.; Yildirim,Ö.; Moghaddam, Naznoosh ShomalıEryngium campestre L. (Apiaceae) are known in Turkish folk medicine as ‘Bogadikeni’ and wildly distributed in all parts of Turkey. Infusion of different parts of this species are well known as diuretic, appetizer and stimulant. In the present study, methanol extracts from flowers and leaves of E. campestre were evaluated for their potential medicinal value in terms of biological targets participate in antioxidant defense such as glutathione-S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT). Results obtained show that the methanol extract of flowers were found to have higher amount of phenolic and flavonoid contents than the leaves. The evaluation of extracts against biological target revealed that, the maximum GST enzymes inhibition activities was observed with methanol extract from flowers of E. campestre with IC50 value of 363 ng/mL. In this study, none of the extracts evaluated were shown any reasonable GPx and CAT inhibition. © 2014, Turkish Pharmacists Association. The modulus of elasticity of the tube material is assumed to vary radially according to a 2 parametric model in a general parabolic form. The analytical plastic model is based on Tresca's yield criterion, its associated flow rule and ideally plastic material behavior. Exact solutions of field equations for elastic and plastic deformations are obtained. It is shown that the elastoplastic response of the functionally graded pressurized tube is affected notably by the radial variation of modulus of elasticity. Number Theory 15, 388-405) characterizing separable simple radical field extensions with the unique subfield property, and prove that these extensions are precisely the simple G-Cogalois extensions with a cyclic Kneser group. © TÜBİTAK.Article Tests of Rationality in the Turkish Foreign Exchange Market(Central Bank Republic Turkey, 2014) Topbas, Neslihan; International Trade and LogisticsThe rationality of expectations has been tested in many foreign exchange markets using survey data. This study is aimed at gaining empirical insights about the expectations of market participants in the Turkish foreign exchange market. Using survey data provided by Central Bank of Turkey on the exchange rate of the Turkish lira against the US dollar, it is determined that the mean of expectations of market participants for one year and one month ahead were higher than the mean of actual depreciation. The analysis resulted in rejection of the popular test for forward exchange rate unbiasedness in predicting the future spot exchange rate. Another test of rationality has also been checked and the result has been rejection as well, which can be interpreted that the forward premium contains additional information for exchange rate forecasts.
