Book Part Citation - Scopus: 0Clinical Development of Quinone-Based Drugs(Elsevier, 2024) Altuner, E.E.; Issa, G.; Ozalp, V.C.; Aldemir, O.; Torlak, Y.; Dar, U.A.This chapter provides a detailed explanation of the clinical investigations, pharmacological effects, and characteristics of quinone and quinone derivatives, along with references to pertinent sources. Although quinones have an oxygen group in their structure, they are quickly oxidized and interact with reactive oxygen species. This demonstrates how quinones work as drugs. Quinones and their derivatives are used as medications to treat a wide range of diseases, including cancer, lung, kidney, brain, and tumor disorders. Each of the following has effects on a different area of health; lapochols, anthraquinones, naphthoquinone and its derivatives, and other wide range of quinone derivatives are thoroughly explored in this chapter. © 2025 Elsevier Inc. The purpose of the designs is to open rectangular slots on rectangular shaped patch antennas and bring them to the desired operating conditions with parametric analyzes. The designs were carried out by following the same procedure steps using five different dielectric laminate substrate materials, such as RO3003, RT6006, FR4, RO3203, RO6010, and one denim fabric base material. The antennas were compared in terms of return loss, gain and radiation characteristics. Except for the antenna designed with RO3203 at certain values of rectangular slots, radiation at multiple frequencies was obtained at 5G frequencies. With the proposed method, improvement was observed for return loss and bandwidth characteristics in the RO3203 based antenna. This study will be a resource for antenna researchers by revealing the responses of different substrate materials to the same design method for 5G bands in patch antennas. © 2024 IEEE.Conference Object A Comparison of Stream Processing Frameworks(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2017) Karakaya,Z.; Yazici,A.; Alayyoub,M.; Software Engineering; Computer EngineeringThis study compares the performance of Big Data Stream Processing frameworks including Apache Spark, Flink, and Storm. For an effective design, it is important that the data used for this purpose should be derived from triaxial swelling tests. In this article, a re-designed and computer-controlled triaxial swelling test apparatus is introduced. Due to the limited amount of test equipment, the work associated with triaxial swelling tests has been rather limited and consequently a test standard has not been developed yet. The computer-controlled triaxial swelling test apparatus has made tedious swelling tests easier and thus it has provided better possibilities for the investigation of the triaxial swelling behavior of soils and rocks.Article Citation - Scopus: 19Creep and shrinkage behavior of high-strength concrete and minimum reinforcement ratio for bridge columns(Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute, 2010) Mertol,H.C.; Rizkalla,S.; Zia,P.; Mirmiran,A.; Civil EngineeringThis paper summarizes the findings of an extensive research program that examined the shrinkage and creep behavior of high-strength concrete (HSC) up to a strength of 18 ksi (124 MPa). Creep and shrinkage strains of 60 specimens were monitored for up to two years. The variables considered in this investigation were the concrete compressive strength, specimen size, curing type, age of concrete at loading, and loading stress level. Research findings indicate that the current American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications could be used to estimate the creep coefficient and shrinkage strain of HSC up to 15 ksi (103 MPa). However, the current AASHTO LRFD specifications do not provide appropriate predictions for concrete compressive strength greater than 15 ksi (103 MPa). A revised time-development correction factor is proposed to obtain better predictions for HSC up to 18 ksi (124 MPa). For HSC compression members, the current AASHTO LRFD specifications require an excessive amount of minimum longitudinal reinforcement to account for the long-term effects due to shrinkage and creep. Based on an analysis, a new relationship is proposed for the required minimum reinforcement ratio.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Determination of Metabolic Rate From Physical Measurements of Heart Rate, Mean Skin Temperature and Carbon Dioxide Variation(Sakarya University, 2022) Özbey, M.F.; Çeter, A.E.; Turhan, C.; Energy Systems Engineering; Mechanical EngineeringThermal comfort depends on four environmental parameters such as air temperature, mean radiant temperature, air velocity and relative humidity and two personal parameters, including clothing insulation and metabolic rate. Environmental parameters can be measured via objective sensors. However, personal parameters can be merely estimated in most of the studies. Metabolic rate is one of the problematic personal parameters that affect the accuracy of thermal comfort models. International thermal comfort standards still use a conventional metabolic rate table which is tabulated according to different activity tasks. On the other hand, ISO 8996 underestimates metabolic rates, especially when the time of activity level is short and rest time is long. To this aim, this paper aims to determine metabolic rates from physical measurements of heart rate, mean skin temperature and carbon dioxide variation by means of nineteen sample activities. 21 male and 17 female subjects with different body mass indices, sex and age are used in the study. The occupants are subjected to different activity tasks while heart rate, skin temperature and carbon dioxide variation are measured via objective sensors. The results show that the metabolic rate can be estimated with a multivariable non-linear regression equation with high accuracy of 0.97. © 2022, Sakarya University. We utilize from a unique dataset collected by Global Entrepreneurship Monitor which is the sole global research repository compiling data on entrepreneurial activities and individual entrepreneurial attributes across 50 countries worldwide. In particular, this study focuses on the GEM survey data pertaining to Turkey during the period coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic in the year 2021. The analysis is done by binary logistic regression with dependent variable being total entrepreneurship activity. Findings indicate that opportunity-driven respondents, with high-status aspirations, possessing necessary skills and acknowledging the challenges of their entrepreneurial environment, are the ones who show a higher probability of engaging in entrepreneurial activities. While these variables have been scrutinized in existing literature, our contribution lies in examining their effects within an emerging market, a relatively understudied context, particularly in the aftermath of a global pandemic. Results suggest that the individuals reporting a substantial increase in income during the pandemic, and perceiving a harder business environment to start a new venture show elevated probabilities of becoming an entrepreneur. These two are the pandemic-related variables demonstrating statistical significance, which highlights the fact that this period created its entrepreneurs, who exploit high resilience and dynamic capacity to adapt to crisis times. They experienced a significant increase in their income, capitalized on their comparative advantage in entrepreneurial skills within an environment where starting a business is not easy and took advantage of the opportunities seeking for high status using their adaptive capacity. These findings are consistent with Theories of Resilience and Dynamic Capabilities. Finally, younger respondents are more inclined to engage in entrepreneurial activity, which is consistent with the existing literature. In light of these findings, policymakers are encouraged to invest in educational programs for potential entrepreneurs to enhance their self-efficacy, given that the necessary skills for business initiation emerge as a pivotal factor for engaging in entrepreneurial activities. Moreover, creating platforms for successful entrepreneurs to share their experiences could amplify the perceived prestige associated with entrepreneurship, which may attract potential entrepreneurs. © 2024 Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited. The data was gathered from the World Bank database for the period of 2002-2021 and consists of six governance indicators and two macroeconomic variables. The independent variables are the six governance indicators (WGI): control of corruption (CC), government effectiveness (GE), political stability and absence of violence/terrorism (PS), rule of law (RL), regulatory quality (RQ), and voice and accountability (VA). The dependent variable is the natural logarithm of GDP per capita, and inflation and real interest rates are control variables. The research identifies a direct and significant relationship between GDPPC and GE, PS, RL, RQ, and VA in OECD countries. These findings suggest that the existence of mechanisms for GE, PS, RL, RQ, and VA contribute positively to economic development. Moreover, interest rates and inflation are found to be significant and negatively related to GDPPC. © 2025, IGI Global. Ceren; Cagiltay, Nergiz Ercil; Ozen, Mustafa; Aydin, Elif; Department of Electrical & Electronics EngineeringEuropean Remote Radio Laboratory (ERRL) is an e-learning project for students, teachers and technicians of the universities who will use the very important devices of this laboratory remotely. These devices are very expensive to buy and can be broken easily while they have been using by the people who does not really know how to use them professionally. As a solution we have developed an e-leaming system which aims to support the ERRL learners while studying on how to use equipments in the system. The system is developed according to the electronic performance support systems (EPSS) approach. An EPSS is a computer-based, well-structured system which improves the performance of individuals. It is an electronic infrastructure that contains, stores and distributes personal (individual) or corporate knowledge to enable people to reach necessary levels of performance in the fastest possible time and with minimum teaching support of other people. This paper discusses how the content for such a system is developed and how this content is interactively used in the EPSS platform. The technical details of the developed EPSS are also discussed in this study. We believe that this paper will help instructional system designers for designing different alternatives to improve learners' performance.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 0A Lithium-Ion Battery Fast Charging Algorithm Based on Electrochemical Model: Experimental Results(American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), 2024) Anwar, S.; Pramanik, S.; Amini, A.Lithium-Ion batteries have become the principal battery technology for EVs to date. However, one of the principal factors limiting the widespread usage of the EVs is the length of charging times for the lithium-ion battery packs. The appropriate charging algorithm is critical to shorten the battery charging times while keeping the battery safe. In our earlier work, we proposed a novel optimal strategy for charging the lithium-ion battery based on electrochemical battery model using A performance index that aimed at achieving a faster charging rate while maintaining safe limits for various battery parameters. A more realistic model, based on battery electro-chemistry has been used for the design of the optimal charging algorithm as opposed to the conventional equivalent circuit models. Simulation results showed that the proposed optimal charging algorithm is capable of shortening the charging time of a lithium-ion cell by as much as 30% when compared with the standard constant current charging. Here we present the results from a number of experiments using Lithium-Ion cylindrical cells that were charged using the proposed algorithm and compared the charging times with the standard constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) charging algorithms. A Maccor Series 4300 battery testing system was used to carry out the experiments. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm offered shorter charging times by up to 16% when compared to the CC-CV charging algorithms under the same battery initial conditions such as SOC and temperature of the cells. It is a form of dehumanization that reduces individuals to pests or insects and constitution of demeaning stereotypes and xenophobia. The use of this metaphor can be traced back to colonial and racist attitudes towards non-white, non-Western individuals who were often depicted as primitive, dirty, and inhuman. This view which was used to justify colonialism and segregation is still prevailing in contemporary society through media and cultural representations. In Rawi Hage's novel Cockroach (2008), the use of the cockroach as a metaphor is a central theme throughout the book. The novel tells the story of an unnamed Lebanese immigrant who is struggling to make a new life in Montreal, Canada. The protagonist sees himself as a cockroach, a resilient survivor that can adapt to any environment and cope with any hardship. The cockroach metaphor in this novel might be interpreted in several ways. On the one hand, it can be seen as an indicator of the protagonist's resilience and ability to survive in a hostile and challenging environment. Since the cockroach is known for its ability to survive in harsh conditions, the protagonist sees himself as embodying these traits. On the other hand, the use of the cockroach as a metaphor might also be seen as the representation of the maltreatment of immigrants in Western societies. The protagonist is often marginalized and discriminated, and his identification with the cockroach can be seen as a way of highlighting the way that immigrants are often seen as pests or insects by mainstream society. Thus, the aim of this chapter is to examine Rawi Hage's novel Cockroach in order to reveal the struggles of immigrants in a new country who try to survive although they face many problems, including isolation, discrimination, poverty, and cultural exclusion. © 2023 Peter Lang Group AG, Lausanne. Identifying the genres of movies is a challenging task because genres are intangible features that are not physically present in any movie scene, so off-the-shelf image detection models may not be easily integrated into this process. In this study, we aim to address the detection of movies according to their genres using deep learning algorithms. Movie poster data of IMDB and MM-IMDB datasets were utilized in our multi-label movie genre detection studies. In our experiments, we utilized four modern pre-trained models follow as DenseNet, VGG-16, ResNet-50, and MobileNet, and evaluated their performance using performance metric values such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F-score. According to the obtained empirical results, the DenseNet architecture achieved the highest accuracy values compared to other deep learning methods in detecting multi-label movie genre detection with an impressive rates of 91.64% and 92.56%. © 2024 IEEE.
